OK so, I'm looking into how I'd go about setting up a network with all servers to run FreeBSD or *nix and not have any windows servers. The clients would be a mix between *nix/*BSD and Windows XP Pro. I've been investigating various solutions on the interwebs as to centralised user management and what comes up quite often are the following: - Kerberos and OpenLDAP - NIS and NFS (although i've read somewhere that Sun are planning to drop NIS) - Fedora Directory Server. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to go about replacing AD with an open source solution and any how-tos etc?

How about FreeBSD?? My web server has been running on Ubuntu server LTS for a while now since switching from Server 2k3 and i'm now wanting to try something a little more robust. I've been playing with FreeBSD following some books i bought (Which are awesome!) and will be making the switch in a couple of weeks on my webserver. Desktop OS i prefer Debian. My thinkpad t41 is a bugger to configure with debian so i've just not bothered and stuck Ubuntu on it. Linux doesnt like my external HDDs for some reason and hangs on boot so my desktop is purely XP (Which i need for some software for my degree). The laptop is dual booting XP and ubuntu.

You dont get frustrated and chuck stuff at them? Seriously though, keeping identities anonymous with student e-mail services by not using their name in the address. Only publishing first names and not surnames alongside photographs on the website. Allowing parents to withdraw consent in writing for things like external e-mail and having their photo on the website. That sort of thing i suppose.

I've recently changed tablets because i complained to my new doctor (had to move for uni) that the old ones arent working. The problem is they're effectively the same thing. So the only way to get any relief is to take 2 of the old tablets (got a small stash left) and 1 of the new ones and flood my eyes with opticrom eye drops. And still, that only lasts a few hours! My dad's gf has something called telfast prescribed from the doctor. HUGE tablets and they are really effective. Today isnt as bad as yesterday if i'm honest, little bit of sneezing instead of every 10 minutes it's every half an hour or something

Offsite backups doesnt necessarily mean using an online backup service. It can just mean a proper tape rotation cycle with friday tapes going offsite and not coming back onsite until the following friday. We used to have a rotation (Which i've forgotten how many weeks it worked on) where monday goes in a fire proof safe in the ICT services office, tuesday goes in a locked room in another part of the school and that alternated for wed and thur and then friday would go offsite. Over a number of weeks (it could have been a 4 week cycle actually) it ensures that you've got offsite backups. No expensive online services required!

I've just ordered a 1U Dell Poweredge 1550 from ebay for home use. I already have a 2U server, and a couple of towers. I'm finding that the rackmount servers are becoming more appropriate because it means eventually i can get a rack and mount them properly along with my switches and routers etc. Also they look nicer Servers are best in Rackmount i find. It's neater.

It runs the line to do the regserver thing and then loads the program itself. That fixed our problems with ProD. Just be thankful you're not dealing with Pro Engineer....that's complicated with license servers and stuff *Sigh*

I had the particular web app used set to record IP address and i traced it back to the upstream proxy at my school. That and no one at any of the other schools om the LEA would have known the stuff that they posted so i knew it came from my school. Then it was a case of tracking proxy logs etc.

I've been using a Linksys WRT54GC. The only problem i've had with it is that you cant forward a port that's different on the WAN to the LAN. As in, you can have port 80 forwarded to port 80 at an ip address. But you cant have port 8080 forwarded to port 80 at an IP Address. I've had to setup NAT on a Cisco 2610 for temporary port translation when i need it.

There are PPC versions of ubuntu so i suppose you could boot one of those and bugger about with the partitions and run a script to fill the disk with crap or something.

I've had issues like that before callum. Also things to do with e-mails from strange people etc. The best was when I caught someone out posting comments about my sex life and then gf on my website. ISA can do time based rules but I'm not sure how flexible it is cause it's been a year or so since i looked at it. It could be that it works on half hour blocks...i cant remember. But i would have thought it depends whether you are hitting the proxy before goign to your Exchange server internally or whether it goes straight to the server.

As much as I <3 IBM kit and have been collecting servers recently (a VA Linux rackmount and a Sun Cobalt Raq are my "proper" ones) I cant drive and i've got no space. Otherwise i would have jumped at the chance.

You've recently setup VMWare. If you leave your PC on at home, why not setup a VM with a server on it? It'll give you a good start in web servers. Always a good learning curve. That or you could run it from your desktop PC using XAMPP (assuming you're windows).
