That would mean talking to the lab technicians though to borrow a bunsen....that'd involve leaving the ICT department, can you take the risk of traversing the school without being acosted to fix something?

Maybe if we werent using kensington locks to hold the cage door shut......

If you're going to use screws to build them yourself make sure you drill out the socket for the screwdriver on the head otherwise they're pointless

When i was working in ICT Services at my school we used to run training for CMIS etc in the ICT department and there'd be a lunch laid on for the delegates (sp?). There were always a lot of cookies left over from that....we can guess where those went There was also a lovely pie once...i forget what was in it, summer fruits i think...there was what appeared to be filo pastry......for a canteen produced item i was amazed! (and yes i side stepped the bad joke about cookies)

I think simongrahamuk has hit the nail on the head there! As ICT technicians / network managers / support staff or whatever your job title is, at the end of the day you're there to make the system run smoothly by whatever means necessary. It doesnt matter whether or not you are CCNA, CCNP, MCSE, MCSA, BEng, BSc or BA!!!! You're presented with a job...do it reliably, and if you want to use CC3 or Ranger or ClassLink to do so, then good! You've found your solution. If possible visit some people and see how their network runs using these management systems...ask whether they're able to demo it for you a little. (Sorry if i've said something someone else has already said...insomnia meant i didnt get any sleep so that'd be what i'm blaming it on)

I suppose it'd be quite easy to produce your own system. Have a web page designed with some php code that rotates the content every x-seconds. The content could be picked up from a MySQL database with a web front end that allows admin staff to update the system. So the system would be on display on a large screen / projector via a computer hidden in a cupboard or something. There's plenty of ways to do it. You could ask a talented VI Former to knock up the system in their spare time or as part of a project for A2-level ICT. I know that when i did A2 ICT we had to produce a system for a company / third party that they were actually going to use so we could do interviews with the "client" / end user etc. So, there's an educational slant on it

When I was at my school we had that problem. The only solution we could find (and IIRC we had a post on edugeek somewhere too) was to upgrade to Exchange Enterprise. When i say upgrade i mean rebuild the server from scratch. Migrate standard exchange onto another box...build enterprise on the server, and then migrate back......v long winded. This is where I go fuzzy on the details as i have a VERY poor memory (which is a bugger because i'm a guitarist ) Enterprise allows more than one mailbox store you can add users to. So you put the staff in one, and the students in the other. Or something like that. You'd need to research it further. I wasn't the one that did the upgrade or found the solution so sorry I'm not much more help but it's all second / third hand info to me.

I got a couple of computers and switch about to go in a skip and some PC100 RAM and 10 gig HDDs etc and the training as I've already said in this thread, has been invaluable. The 24 port Allied Telesyn switch I got has been used for playing GT4 on PS2 in my flat at uni so proved itself priceless

Payment was always a bone of some contention. I never wanted payment for what i did and the school didnt seem to understand that. There was always comments about how "they'd like to pay me but cant because it would set a precedent(sp?) for other students." Never mind that I'd never once asked for money or given indication that I was disappointed I didnt get any. They did however send me a cheque in the post for some work done outside of term time which i was really flattered to recieve.

Whilst yes, student support can be a valuable asset to a school, I still feel it's important to set boundaries. For example you wouldnt really want to give a year 11 pupil the code to the server room door and an admin account to go and block sites on the proxy server! No matter how trustworthy they may be, they're still open to bribing. (That was just an example case, i'm not saying any of you guys are doing that!) There is always the question of pupil/staff boundaries aswell. I know when I was doing my work for the VI Form at my school I was subject to a lot of hassel from other students everytime something didnt work or everytime a new website got blocked so is it always in my best interests to try and distance myself from it during lesson time. Dispite what your student techie will say, if they have a heavy involvement in ICT services they will get staff stopping them in corridoors, in the library and in lessons when they should be in "lesson mode" trying to get them to help with a problem and it does put studies in jepardy. It can appear as if staff almost start to bully you a bit into helping them because they're your teacher and you should have some kind of loyalty to them. It's not nice, so, kids, BEWARE! LOL Then there's the issue of accountability. Who's fault is it when something goes wrong?! (Maybe that's a topic for another day when I actually have my glasses on) But on a lighter note, all the work I did for ICT services has helped me quite a LOT in my first semester at university, again, despite what some members of staff at my school felt. If you're a student, and you feel you can hack it and keep up with studies, be responsible and learn to say no once in a while, go for it!

Yes...but usually it's a case of having to look for it to find it...as opposed to stumbling accross it on edugeek.
