Well technically I'm a student. But I'm at university ATM. I /was/ working in the ICT Services department at my school during VI Form and had been posting/reading during those two years. I can safely say that I've learnt a lot from edugeek and have always found it an interesting read even if i'm not in a situation i need help with. I think it'd be a good idea to have an area/rank for students who are interesting in the tech support field to have a go at posting. But of course, if they're identified, then we'll all know not to give info out like "offline password resetting using linux boot disks" etc But then again, they'll just read this thread and then lie about it in their profile!

LOL technically i'm not so much of an edugeek at the moment as a geek in edu. But we'll see what the future holds

Admitting you're a geek is cool...but people keep telling me i'm not a geek The multitool that is always attached to my belt and the 3 computers, 24-port LAN switch and 14 million LAN patch leads in my room at uni should surely give that away? (And the fact that i'm posting on EduGeek @ 0246hrs on a friday night!!)

Are you sure you've set the subnet mask correctly. Remember if you're trying to access from a different subnet you're going to have problems if the mask is 255.255.255.0 For eg all our servers were on 192.168.3.0 and the clients were on different subnets.......i spent 4 hours puzzling why i couldnt SSH to the server...it was cause i'd not set the subnet mask correctly. It's just a though for something to check If you're trying to join it to a domain, which i've managed, but never got it to authenticate properly, use winbind. Remote access use SSH. Or if you're not proficient enough at command based management you could setup the xserver on it with VNC access or failing that install Webmin.

I need a student loan!! Mostly because I'm a student. But yes, I think it would be a good idea for insentives like that to be in place. But as GrumbleDook said, there's a shortage of teaching staff but not of support staff. There are certainly some advantages to being a teacher. But it's things like that, that are making me want to go into industry not back into education once my degree is over.

We'd used to do it with environment variables and batch files at logons. But everytime we re-imaged a machine we'd get called away to go and do another job and forget to set an environment variable and then a week later we'd get complaints about printers not working, so it got moved over to VB script.

The other thing to do would be using one of those mini tripods. The sort that fold up and fit in your pocket. But then you've got to find somewhere to stand it like a table or a wall etc and obviously...they're not always to hand. So you also need to take a wall with you They dont fit in your pocket though

I've noticed that with a lot of things. Like those razors you have to feed batteries to...that's just a stupid idea! (I mean the gillette wet shave ones...not actual electric razors...i'm not advocating hand crank or even petrol razors here!)

tickmike...yes...I did read your first post and that's why I suggested that it should work seamlessly but to check your proxy settings because some dialup ISPs (namely NTL) required proxy settings to be used. Hence my suggesting it. Anyway...glad you got it working.

Your existing accounts should continue working with your broadband connection without any interferance surely! Unless you've still got proxy settings / need to add some for your past / new ISP. I know that when i had Tiscali dial-up i had an e-mail account with them that wouldnt work on a different ISP because the servers werent being accessed from one of their IP addresses...i doubt that that is the problem in the case of hotmail, lycos and yahoo though!

My flatmate has just bought a Wacom tablet from amazon (if i remember correctly). He's not had to use it properly for his course (Games Design BSc) but he said that he's found it top notch so far! As far as I've heard in the past, Wacom have been the industry standard and were mentioned in several trips to universities during my A2 Product Design course.

We analyzed the proxy logs and found that the most data was being transfered over t'internet at lunch times and the site that it was due to was....yup you guessed it. Google images! So, we decided that it might be a good idea to setup a rule to block it at lunch times. Then we thought, "ooooh the number of kids that use it for legitimate uses in homework etc." We just ended up leaving it and blocking http://*.premiumtv.co.uk/* instead Bye bye all football sites LOL.

Well, unfortunately, our server cab was bolted to the floor and the cable plant didnt have enough slack for it to be moved away from the wall. Not only did this rack have two of the domain controllers in it, it also had the main chassis switch and 6 other HP procurves and all the patch panels for the e-learning centre. The rest of the servers were on shelves around it. So i had to crawl through this shelving system and then someone had to pass me the vacuum hose through the servers LOL.

Is there any client software that you could use instead of IP phones? Ie...if you just plug the box into the network you have VoIP working with client software and headsets on machines etc? Or should I play with something else for that sort of thing?

Find all the geeks out and ask them if they want some 15" CRTs to use alongside their 19" TFT LCD quad-head graphics rig at home. It might work *dreams* LOL

The site manager would have been on our case if we'd stuck 25 RM CRTs in the skips/bins about the site! I think someone came to recycle those.
