What about student technicians? Surely if they are taking a very active role in the ICT support side of the school they have a valid point if they are taking an active role in network management/rebuilds and general ICT services etc. I only say that because I was the student technician. I'm currently doing my a-levels...but i can safely say that Edugeek has given me the opertunity to add to my knowledge of ICT support. So thanks! I'm off to study a network engineering degree in september where i'll get my CCNA at the same time. But group policy...not THAT boring! (oh dear god, i can feel the force pulling me in!!!!)

Fedora...i'm most used to that and ubuntu (having had very little to do wtih linux, but what has been has been to do with them). I think Ubuntu is the way forward for this particular cunundrum

Yh USB v1...that's probably the reason anyway. I got fed up with it so i took it apart to see whether the USB connections to the circuit were loose, they were, so they got a resoldering and the case wouldnt go back together (i think i snapped something) so it's currently held together with self amalgamating tape So MythTV...what distro are you running it on? Any guides on setting it up out there?

This is probably the wrong place to ask but is kind of related. My Hauppage WinTV usb thingy never really gave me a good picture...any ideas why? Are there any tv cards out there that you know of that give a decent picture (without graining etc)

I think there's a way to do it with a WinTV card and windows media server. I've not tried it myself, but seeing as you can publish to the server using windows media encoder and a webcam, i dont see why you cant tell WME to use the winTV card instead. Do you need a special license to "re-broadcast" tv?

You might want to be careful about showing his/her username and calling them a little s0d. Someone associated wtih him (eg parent, teacher, friend) might see this and get offended. Yes it's a remote possibility, but this particular pupil might try to cause some fuss over it?

There's a live CD that you can download from various sources on t'internet that boots up and gives you a tool to change the local NT passwords. It's NT only obviously so it'll work on XP but not mac or owt like that. If i can remember the link for the ISO i'll post it.

I'm currently a VI Form student and also a Student ICT technician at my school. This means that i 've gained a lot of experience in ICT support and various server technologies. I have been very lucky to have been involved from the beginning of this network build (ie server 2k3 + AD etc as opposed to RM's CC3) meaning that i've been able to be taught and experienced the new technology as it was implemented. Due to this "watching + learning" i have been able to replicate a lot of stuff on servers at home. I have also been given chances to implement new technologies and management systems. We were using OTRS helpdesk that was implemented by a techie that left and didnt set it up right. So I moved us over to liberum which suits are needs much better than OTRS. I was also responsible for the implementation of windows media server for various things. The advice i have recieved from from technicians at the school and ones that have visited from external companies has been varied. Some say to go and do my Cisco and Microsoft certifications, not a degree, and go straight into the world of work. But i've decided on a route i've found for myself. I'm starting a Network Engineering (BEng) degree at stafford university in september and that will allow me to also get my CCNA at the same time. This degree incorparates a placement year in the third year so anyone looking for a partly qualified network engineer in 2009/2010 let me know But i've descovered that ICT and LANS are something i love and ICT support is something i enjoy doing, and obviously it's something i want to persue as a career. Seeing as i've had experience of the education sector i think it'd do me good to get experience of the corporate sector too. Can anyone shed any light on which they have found to be the best line of employment so far? Educational, Coporate or sort of LEA level GfL management? Joe

Yeah i know how to connect up to it. And i have done, i'm into it on the RS232 telnet connection and the web interface, just saying that it's not particularly user friendly as far as my opinion goes. And i'm not entirely sure whether the firmware upgrade was used, it was found at the back of a cupboard recently and was configured etc by the previous ICT techies. I've reset to factory settings and configured it to how i think it should be and no luck. I put the SSID etc into the XP laptop (running a 54G connection) as a pre-configured WIFI connection, and still no joy. Could the AP just be buggered?

Cheers! I'd be interested to see if it works. They're a bugger to configure though...nothing like navigating over an RS232 telnet connection The web interface is even less useful as far as i'm concerned. But maybe it's because i've got no manuals :'(

Yes and yes again. TBH i think it's something to do with the configuration of the RF settings on the AP. What i'm acutally trying to do with it is use it as a bridge between two networks. I want to connect the cabled network in my garage with the wireless router in my house. I'm not at all clued up on how to do that with the intel AP because i've got no instruction manual and the ones that googling revealed werent that useful.

TFTP is running...as far as i can tell the dhcp.conf file is set up right...but i might be wrong seeing as my knowledge of linux isnt all /that/ great. What do i need to have in my dhcp.conf file to make sure that the tftp info is issued right?

I've set up FC5 and LTSP 4.2 on a test network at home. DHCP is set up and working properly as far as i can tell...atftpd is installed, configured and turned on and the firewall is disabled. On boot the PXE boot sequence goes ... - DHCP server is found and assigns the client ip of 192.168.62.251, net mask 255.255.255.0, DHCP server ID 192.168.62.254 and gateway id 192.168.62.1. Great...no problems there... It then tries the tftp server and says "PXE-E32: TFTP open timeout" and then goes back to "TFTP......" Anyone any ideas as to what i might be doing wrong? Thanks, Joe
