I used to put ours on as low as it would go (mainly cause when i was in there i was stuck behind the rack where it's warm) and that was a nice frosty 18degrees. I think the preference was around 20-21 by the other techies / head of ICT Problem is....when the power trips it didnt have enough time to reset and we'd be working away recabling when the builders tripped the breakers and when it came back on it was blowing VERY hot...we didnt notice and there was condensation starting to form on the rack. Shouts and panic to off the thing and wait for it to reset itself...not very amusing. I think we found the setting for it in the end.

I got an IBM Thinkpad T41 with a gig of ram in it from ebay for 300 quid inc PnP. It's a refurb but it's bloody awesome. Best laptop i've ever had!! I've put the 120 gig HDD in it from my old laptop aswell and it's just brilliant. 1.7GHz processor or something like that i think. Also...it's only an inch thick and is rather compact so great for carting places. I've been known to take it to the CCNA lab at uni to test out ACLs during lab sessions by setting up various servers on it.

I bought a VA Linux 2U rackmount server from e-bay recently. £80 including post and packing (of which there was a lot!) It's got dual P3 1GHz processors, 512Mb RAM and a hotplug raid (with only one 9.1gig disk in it) I've put a 120gig IDE drive in it and it is awesome. If not a little loud. It comes with 2NICs in it aswell and has serial for the UPS etc. There are still some on there IIRC. Look for Snowdon Computers (or something liek that)

@ajbritton The /console switch works fine connecting from my xp pro laptop to my xp pro desktop. But I have the latest update for MSTSC.

I'm with k-strider on this one. It's easy enough top have 443 opened up and use HTTPS to access WebDAV through IIS with that lovely bit of CSS that opens up the link in folders view. Just rely on your NTFS permissions being setup correctly to do the listing of directories etc appropriately. It was a bit of a PITA to setup the first time I did it (i was only 16 at the time) but it gets easier with practice and when you're not fumbling around for CSS snippets to make it work lol.

Definately. But that's assuming that they are using Windows Live Messenger and have remote assistance enabled. But yes...it's the way with the least hassle. I've never been able to get it to work to tell you the truth.

I would have thought the only problems is when you dont save configs. I'm not sure what the HPs are like with regards to saving config etc but I know i've spent 30 minutes working out ACLs on a cisco router (or vlanning on a switch like TeddyKGB) only to bounce the power and then thing "oh crap, i didnt copy running-config to startup-config in the nvram" *sigh*

Have you tried mstsc? mstsc /v IP-ADDRESS /console That will connect you to the existing session (this is assuming he's running windows and has remote access enabled. I've always found VNC to be slow over the internet. But maybe that's just me.

@callumtuckey We had a Gyration wireless keyboard and mouse in every e-learning suit and in most rooms with an interactive whiteboard accross the school (i think...there were certainly a set in each RE room) and they never got pinched. I think it's down to location and pupils. We did however have a monitor taken from ICT (we had CCTV) and also a couple of projectors were taken and then found again hidden somewhere on site. But no keyboards or mice, and gyration kit is worth about 90 quid for the kbd and mouse!
