    Out of interest, did you try unpacking the .exe to see if the MSI is hidden inside it?

    I'll be honest, there are so many updates released that I just rely on the update step. We have a WSUS server so it isn't like our internet is getting hammered.

    On my base win 7 installs I install Win 7 SP1, and then in the task sequence (you will learn what this is) I put in an update step. So after it has installed Win 7 it pulls down important updates automaticly and installs them (including handling the restarts). When I go back to my machines I just press finish, log out and they are good to go. MDT is a really easy install, it prompts for required components and runs off and gets them for you! Enjoy! It's a very rewarding implementation.

    Let me put it this way, I could confidently setup an MDT server in under 2 hours. At the end of those 2 hours I would be able to dish out Win 7 and a set of applications to any computer booted into PXE. However, it doesn't stop there, it is a really robust platform and you can tweak it quite endlessly. For example, I have a sequence that takes user data off of a machine, reinstalls windows 7 and the n puts back their data. Pretty cool As others have said, loads of guides online. I'd encourage setting aside some time for it and having a good look

    I'll be honest, this doesn't answer your question, but have you tried MDT? The only reason I ask is that it is so easy I really can't see why more people are not using it.

    A quick thought would be a synology NAS with their native iOS apps. The NAS supports LDAP so the user could login with their AD credentials.... This was a very quick thought so it might not be practical.

    Based on what I suggested initially, just buy a decent computer, fill it up with HDD's (WD now doing a 4TB bad boy!) get a RAID card and install backup exec and put it in a different location in the school. We are thinking of hosting another schools backups in exchange with them hosting ours (DPM). This is actually quite a nice solution but it relies on both of us having decent upload speeds.

    Hmmmmm, my images take around 2 hours to send back to the server (I actually send them to an ext attached to the server), we do have a 10GB backbone though...

    Woah, that sounds like quite a project you have on your hands! Backup-exec or DPM I find Backup-exec easier, but I have had some issues backing up VM's in a cluster...not sure if your school will be that advanced. That is the only thing that has fueled my move to DPM.

    We did the same and put in a smoothwall box that filters the LEA provided pipe. In our situation, the LEA pipe wasnt exactly unfiltered which made troubleshooting a challenge at times, but it was a stage in a plan to move the BT anyway.

    iPods? The only reason I can think of the accounts being locked it based on the account lockout policy in group policy. Typically this is 5 login attempts in 5 minutes so something has to be hammering LDAP incorrectly to lock them.

    Auto-saved somewhere? I had a very similar issue where the old password was stored in their key-chains when they used Macs

    Have to run the test to see if smoothwall is talking to the AD correctly? Ours messed up when the time was slightly out. Services -> Authentication -> Control

    Thanks guys, we don't use proxy.pac however I will try this and see what happens!

    Anyone getting any issues with Windows 8 and Smoothwall? We have a test teacher with a Win 8 laptop and every morning she is getting the "Proxy Server is not responding Error". Funnily enough this is not when she initially logs in every morning but randomly an hour later and it is fixed by logging out and in again. Based on this I reckon its an Auth issue, NTLM wasn't stripped from Win 8 in the end was it...? Will accept all suggestions
