Another Smoothwall customer here. A few notes would be that the support is amazing....when you get through to them. You can sometimes log a ticket and have to wait an age to have somebody ring you back, even if you chase. However when they do log in they are really knowledgeable. One thing to remember is that none of the filtering solutions come out of the box ready for you, although you will have "something" setup in 20/30 mins, regardless of school, you will spend a good month or so tinkering to make it do exactly what you want. Especially when SLT keep moving goalposts

Hi there, Not sure where to put this so feel free to move if required, I need to log when a device is connected to the network, I can obviously delete it's DHCP lease and check back later to see when it connected....and then delete it again, but I am looking for a solution that better logs the active times of this device. Any suggestions? Thanks

Ah I'm afraid I run out of knowledge here. The only problem I have had close to this is that it forgets domains after a)Big updates and b) the time on the DC and the Mac being off. Might be worth checking the latter.

When you say reconnect, when you go to Accounts -> Login options did it show the domain as unavailable?

Simply bad networking in one area caused this problem for us.

You are talking about School Asset Manager, we went with this at my previous school and it was very very good, largley because people wanted to use it ("ooooo shiny iPod"). But it does cost of course

Rack up a QNap or a Synology. Easy to upgrade the hard drives, also very easy to upgrade the machine itself with either more ram or an upgraded connection (e.g. 10gb fibre) Most support iSCSI and Hyper-V etc.

My previous school allowed it for all staff and 6th form, quite a good school so this worked fine. We also had smoothwall for logging.

You can do clever things if you do this right, SCCM for example.

I may be going into a school with a half setup SCCM in the next few months, I would obviously like to remove it and start again. Does anybody know the correct procedure for this? Far too many times I have seen people rip out the still-beating heart of some servers/roles and it cock up everything.

Are they switching from Mac to Mac? Or mac to PC?

To be honest I think I have simply hit my knowledge barrier. I'm not really asking questions from a practical point of view, more to further my own understanding. I hadn't though of the location setup, but I understand how that would work. In terms of interface, would you make the VLAN have a different default gateway (as associated with the interface)? What does smoothwall have in place to handle separate interfaces?
