Its actually quite refreshing to see that Smoothwall are not just ignoring us! We had some issues with Sketchup and I rang 3 times in 1 week and nobody got back to me, in the end my manager rang and insisted on it being done there and then as we had people from a local university coming in to do some training with Sketchup that day. However, as many of you have mentioned, when you get help they are bloody good.

What I mean is, why do you not make another Deployment Share and then put the boot images that they create into WDS? Meaning when you press f12 you will have an option of 4 boot images instead of 2 (presuming you use the x64 and x86 boot image). 2 of these will connect you to one deployment share, the other 2 will connection you to the other deployment share. Testing and Live. Excuse me if I have interpreted this incorrectly.

Does anyone know how well they work with a Mountain Lion Server?

I think it installs 2 profiles...one you can password protect with Apple Configurator, the other you can not.

Enjoy. I would advise updating the zone director if you have not been using it for very long. You can either get the zone director to get the update itself (note: it doesn't get on with proxies) or download it from your support providers (net-ctrl?). The way the update works is that you update the zone director, then the zone director dishes out the update for the AP's, this will make them all do a restart cycle so do it after school, but it is incredibly satisfying.

If they are saying disconnected they simply are not plugged in. If they are plugged in and they are saying disconnected then its the IP conflict issue and you need to factory restore them so they get a new IP by DHCP. To restart an AP go to Monitor -> Access Points and you will get a table full of AP information. The far right column should say Action and the far right action is a little blue circle with arrows in it. This is the restart button. BUT if they are disconnected they won't get this message, so you are gonna have to go hunt these things down and make sure they are plugged in.

No wirries, I have had to explore it myself with our problems so its nice to pass on some knowledge. I would encourage putting aside some time to have a play with the done director, depending on your model, it is a quite capable piece of hardware and monitoring tool. If you like graphs go to Monitoring -> Real Time Monitor - >Add widget and add anything you wish to monitor. Seeing the total number of connected clients makes interesting reading.

To follow up. Go to Monitor -> Currently Active Clients and find the netbook by DNS name. To the right it will give you the Mac address of the AP it is connected to, if you click the Mac address (highlighted in blue) you will get more info. Like a boss.

Log into the zone director and each AP will list what devices are connected. I think it gives you the DNS name, but I know it gives you the Mac address. This actually gives you lots of stats like channel and signal strength. This is how we found out the 6th forms iPhones, iPods and Android devices were stealing all the signal.

I would go with Meraki. You create a profile online, bind the iPad and off you go. I had some issues with Apple Configurator and PAID apps, worked fine for free ones. Edit: A large part of the issue was ensuring that you made them managed rather than just deployed. If you deploy them the key for a paid app (e.g. Pages) is binded to that iPad forever. However if you manage them, when you un-manage them it releases the code to be used with another iPad. This system is good an theory, but a pain to actually use, we lost a few keys that way .

Ah, that old Chestnut. Are you not supplied with a completely unfiltered proxy from SWGFL? I think you might have to request it but I know it can be done. Admitedly we never had this issue as the iPads turned up at the same time we switched over to BT.

Instead of Apple Configurator, see what you think about Meraki.

We have 35 netbooks in constant use in a site that is supported using a ruckus wireless solution. From my experience the speed of the log on tends to come down to the make/model of the machine (duh) where newer is not necessarily better. We had a set of Samsung N510s which use an atom processor and they were painfully slow, we added a set of Acer 722's and these were rapid. Encouraged by this we got a set of Acer 725's but sadly they are not as quick as the 722's, but admittedly faster than the Samsungs. I really do not think netbooks should be on a domain, specifically if they are on the wireless...

Hmmm, well we have 30 iPads in school and I admit there was a learning curve, but I think it depends on how you want to use them. 10 of our iPads are for staff as a learning aid, they are basically their own iPads and they download apps they wish to use for demonstrations etc. We can control these with SCCM which gets linked with Exchange Activesync (so when they add their school email to the iPad) The 20 iPads are for student use, they book them out for a lesson and use them much the same way as they would a laptop. For control of these we previously used Apple Configuration, but soon realised that it was not ready for the big show, so we change to Meraki which I would encourage anyone in this situation to have a look at. It works a lot like Configurator except it is all controlled from a web interface so you an add apps, wi-fi profiles etc from the web and it updates within 2/3 mins. My next step of looking into this is with a Mountain Lion server that is currently in the post, if this is still a point of conversation after I have had a look I will post an update.

I will third this as a time issue. If you have a mac server with WGM, set the time server as your DC for all the clients.

KMS servers are awesome. The idea is you set it up once and it just does its thing! If my memory is correct, VAMP won't start activating until it has over 10 computers to activate, so don't get disheartened during your testing if it isnt working.

This is actually very nice and i will be trying it out tomorrow! We typically just host the key on a protected drive share and copy and paste it in. Simples. When that got annoying we set up a KMS

Huh, I did not see that people had replied to this. I have been using Snow Leopard Server for a while and have just gotten round to ironing out some of the little issues. I don't think the hours are that bad. My interpretation is that people have to be there from 8:30 til 6:30, not that you'd be expected to work that entire shift. That's like a 9 til 7, nobody should expect that.

Do you not just tick the "Force local home directory on startup disk" check box? Alternatively write an apple-script and bundle it as an application and drop it in the Application folder so they at least have access to it. What you really want to do is get the Snow Leopard Server and WGM working alongside your WIN 2008 R2 domain, you will then have the central control for dock menu items, folder mappings etc.

I am sure there must be a .dmg out there somewhere. I had a similar issue but with the GarageBand Additional content and managed to download a .dmg. Have you tried making one with .pkg creator?

I installed AD Helpdesk Lite for a while, but had limited used for it to be honest :/

Yea I can't find the 2012 version, only 2007 and 2010. We have everything else 2012 orientated.
