  1. Okey cokey. Do you do anything for, say, student A logging in and saving files to the C:/ drive and then logging in as an Exam account and reading these files? Edit: Also - how do those e-exam accounts get tidied up?
  2. I've not posted in a very long time but I have come across something I think only you guys can help me with! E-exams - how the hell do you do this? We have a requirement for a secure exam environment in which student login using 'an' account, can use a set of applications (one day this might be Word, another day it might be RStudio etc) and submit their work at the end. It must have all the usual stuff like not being able to access files that could have been put on the machines before and suitable internet filtering etc. We currently use a Frankenstein's monster of a custom script, Comodo firewall and DeepFreeze combo - but this just isn't sustainable and I want to kill deepfreeze. Grateful of any help! Thanks, Jason
  3. Ahaha! Fixed it. Apparently the KB4041691 is poop - use KB4041688 instead (dated yesterday). I didn't get this as part of the normal 'check for update pass' (we point towards MS servers, not our own WSUS) so add a step into your TS that adds this update. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4041688/windows-10-update-kb4041688
  4. Hi all, I have a Windows 10 1607 capture task sequence that seems to be running into trouble during the update phase. It just seems to get stuck for a long period of time without doing anything, but will then eventually come to life after possibly hours. The big update a clean 1607 has to install is the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 (KB4041691) and that is where the process seems to be halting. Looking in the setup logs in event viewer I am getting a constant loop of: Initiating changes for package KB4041691. Current state is installed. Target state is staged and Package KB4041691 failed to be changed to the stages state. Status 0x800f0816. Notes: I have tried both letting the machine get the update from Microsoft and injecting it during the task sequence. We are pointing to MS update servers, not out own. I cant stop/start or do anything with the Windows Update service at this point. Eventually this continues, possibly an 'attempt counter' maxes out.
  5. Hi all, The powers that be are forcing us down a C2R install route for our computer labs however we have an issue with logging in to Office. Every time a user logs onto a machine they have to then also login to Office 365 when they start Word/Excel etc. This is fine for users own machines (Admin users etc), but for students they have to do it EVERY time they login to a new machine. Does a SSO method for this exist? Thanks, Jason
  6. Thanks, will give it a shout.
  7. Anyone know of any good learning material for this exam? The official guide seems to be slated quite a bit on Amazon and I am just wondering if anyone has come across anything better.
  8. @srochford is an ok boss, except he keeps making me do work
  9. This saved a substancial sized organisation yesterday. Rep for you sir!
  10. To be honest I was just exploring the tool rather than having any need for it. I actually found out some cool stuff by looking into the advanced settings in the end.
  11. Hi all, more of an enquiry rather than a mission critical problem. If i have an XP machine with 3 accounts, each with its own password, and I migrate this to a Windows 7 machine (Side-by-side) when I fire up the Win 7 machine after migration each accounts password has been blanked. It just says that "User must change there password before first login" or what have you. Is this normal? Not overly a security risk as you need to be an Admin to run the tool in the first place, although if the Admin forgets to set the users passwords any user could then login!
  12. Good morning all, This is more of a an application deployment question rather than a o/s deployment question, but I imagine the same kind of people will be able to help me with this one. I am looking to deploy a pre-created .msi via a .cmd to a number of computers, however I need the msi to add an environment variable. Normally I would fire up ORCA and add the line I require to the environment table....however this .msi doesn't have one! Nor does it have an Environment component. As such, how would I go about adding this EV into a .msi? Grateful of any help!
  13. I have an office with 5 or 6 HP 8000 Elite SFF's and they simply won't wake from standby. The staff go home of an evening, as per our green policy the computer goes to sleep, they come in in the morning move the mouse/mash the keyboard etc and they simply will not wake. In the end they have to do a hard reset. Anybody got any ideas to what might be the problem? I have done a BIOS update, was thinking maybe HDD firmware also?
  14. Odd, permission issue?
  15. Yea its in GPP now: Source: Windows Server 2012 LOcal Group Policy Proxy setting is gone
  16. Also, if you can't find your win8 disc, just download a free trial of server 2012, its basically the same architecture so should work....in theory. Source: Error codes when you try to install the .NET Framework 3.5 in Windows 8 or in Windows Server 2012
  17. Does it start to download and then error out? Or does it not even get that far?
  18. Does it always fail on the same stuff? Or have you tried to make it recover other files of about the same size.
  19. May be a good excuse to upgrade to 2008 r2
  20. Fixing it yourself is brave, and you need some specialist tools, but it is actually quite fun to do.
  21. This. Forever.
  22. Oddly, last time we bought Apple Macs, PCWorld was the cheapest of any of our suppliers.
  23. I wonder if it scales better though? Meaning you don't have to have so many exchange servers as an organization gets bigger? No real use for us of course, but Microsoft forget about schools. Do you virtulise your exchange? Tried it once, never again.
  24. +1 for Deepfreeze
  25. I honestly think exchange 2010 and 2013 have gotten greedy. One example is duplicate emails, If I send out 1 email to 1000 staff in exchange 2007 it keeps one copy, however on 2010 and 2013 it keeps 1000 copies (one for each mailbox). Nightmare.
