I think if I had to give a figure for our expected lifespan for them 7 years (on average) would probably be the number I'd go with. They should in theory last longer but you'll always get a few failures and it's always possible that they may eventually stop supporting older boards on newer versions of Windows/etc in time. Plus parts (PSU's/Pens/etc) for older models may become difficult to source.

Ive just realised that my pension retirement age has now been raised to 68 !!!! It seems to go up by a year every decade. I'm genuinely wondering if I'll be able to retire before 70 at this rate! Maybe France have the right idea..........

We've been trying to capture video footage over firewire from a variety of camcorders and so far everytime I've tried to do it on Windows7 the capture either fails or crashes out. I've tried using Corel VideoStudio and Movie Maker but neither seem to work with any camcorder we have under Windows7. The cameras themselves seem to be getting picked up by Windows7 as it detects them and appears to install the driver OK but Windows seems to be unable to interface with them properly to capture the footage. We've used the same camcorders with the same hardware/software on WindowsXP and it works fine? Is there some kind of option you need to check or driver you need to install in Window7 to make firewire cards work when capturing Digital Video? One thought I had was that fiewire does add itself as a NIC interface so I wondered ifthat might be causing issues? I've not tested disabling it yet to see if this resolves the situation. Has anyone else encountered similar problems when trying to capture DV over firewire in Windows7?

So far no real issues apart from one of the 12 or so printers we've upgraded losing it's IP address. Not 100% whether that was a result of the firmware or someone resetting it though. HP have said they'd include the fix in the next firmware release so it should be fixed when that's released.

Does anyone have any thoughts on a logo for my Residents Association website. My housing scheme is called "Princes Gate" so maybe something with a gate/royal symbol/motif would be appropriate. Any ideas/designs would be appreciated, TIA

I'd agree. The usual suspects bundling AV 'trialware' is one of the biggest factors contributing to security issues on the internet. Problem is they give you a 6 month trial which expires, virtually nobody bothers to renew the subscription hence joe bloggs is left with worthless out of date antivirus. Would be better if perhaps when the AV expired the PC defaulted to MS Security Essentials as an alternative since it's vastly better than out of date AV. In fact IMO (for home users at least) Security Essentials is better than all of the paid-for solutions out there !

The answer is that they could but like any other commodity the more of it the print into existence the less valuable it becomes. So in simple terms let's say there's £100 in cash floating around in the world. If the Government prints another £100 then the effective value of the existing currency is halved. This is a pretty half-baked examle but you get the idea. As I understand it Money is effectively an IOU backed by a government?

I think my main problem is that I've read/understood enough to scare me but no in depth enough to fully understand it! Main bullet points being :- 1) Banks don't need to have enough money in reserve to cover what they lend 2) Money isn't actually backed by and kind of physical commodity 3) Our economy is pretty much based on debt and the promise of future debt Will somebody please tell me why I shouldn't be worried by the above cause based on that it doesn't look good .....!

Edit: Just been on 123-reg and notice they offer some (alledgedly!) one-click options for automatically setting up stuff like phpbb,wordpress,etc which sounds like it would be ideal for what I'm after? Has anyone any experience of them and this system?

Worth mentioning that you can only use iTunes to pair/sync the ipod with one computer. So if you own multple PC's/etc choose which one carefully as changing it means deleting all of the movies/music from the ipod. Also you have to effectively duplicate your entire MP3 collection so that you then have a copy of it in encrypted itunes format. So make sure you have plenty of free disk space ! I quite like my iphone but utterly loathe and despise the fact that I need to use iTunes to sync it with my PC for the above reasons!

Hi Everyone, I’m planning on trying to put together a website for my residents committee (and all owners/tenants) in my block of flats. I’d like for it to provide a website forum and log-on’s for potentially up to 300-400 users. There are 183 flats in my development and most are rented so I’d like to have logon options for both the tenants and owners. Other than the forums I’d like to use the website for hosting minutes of meetings/factoring documents/letters. Some kind of bulk email (for newsletters/etc.) to all users’ would be useful as well. Problem is I really don’t have much of a clue when it comes to putting together a website from scratch. I’ve had a look at 1&1 for hosting which seems like it might do the trick. It offers the option of Linux hosting or MS hosting. I’d guess I’d be looking for Linux hosting and using something free like phpbb since I won’t actually be generating any income from the website. Their mid-range package for £8.99 month offers up to 10 MySQL databases and what looks (to me at least!) like a good range of supported options? Can anyone advise whether that will be sufficient for what I’m planning on doing and whether there’s anything else I should consider or look into before signing up? Any advice appreciated…! TIA

Just a quick question about staff home use rights if I can :- Previously ActivStudio could be made available to staff to install at home for perparatory work. We have about 30 Promethean ActivBoards installed at our school all of which came with copies of ActivStudio. Are we entitled to give each staff member with a board a copy of ActivInspire Professional (+ a licence key) to install at home as before?

I wouldn't really worry about print jobs using up network bandwidth to be honest. That's what the network's there for! More important to have queue's on a central server. Problem with local client queues is that you have no central control over print settings/drivers and no auditing control over what users are printing. Unless you have no other option (ie dodgy unsigned drivers/etc) I'd shy away from ever using local print queues.

Just to update on the ongoing saga HP is given us an updated beta firmware which seems to have resolved the problem. So far no printer we've updated to the latest version of the firmware has going offline again! Will report back once the staff/kids return and everyone's been working normally for a week or two but so far so good.........
