I actually think 11-12" is the perfect "sweet-spot" for portable laptops. Big enough so that you can have a decent resolution (1368x768), full size keyboard and regular sized trackpad but small enough so it can easily be picked up, chucked in a backpack or put into a bag. The problem I have with the 13" model is that to me it looks like a regular 13" laptop, but slightly thinner, whereas the 11" model is in a league all of its own when it comes to portability/function. But then everyone has their own idea of what makes the perfect laptop! Mind you it can't be all that perfect because I still haven't bought one yet and probably wont until either the price drops or they announce the i3 CPU version.There aint no way I'm buying one now if the upgraded one is literally out in 4 months time as rumours seem to imply

Just as an FYI for anyone think about getting one it's looking like there may be a Macbook Air 'sandy bridge' refresh far sooner than expected :- Sandy Bridge MacBook Airs inbound ? reghardware I didn't think we'd see one this year given it was only released Oct' 2010. Having said that it's not necessarily all good news as though the i3 processor will undoubtedly be better I suspect the current Nvidia 320 GPU may be better than the Intel integrated GPU that replaces it.

Guess they needed to do something like that as they weren't really able to compete with what they currently have on offer. It's been a very long time since I've considered buying a Nokia handset! As other's have mentioned Nokia can design some really nice hardware so this should be a good fit for them though I'd have preferred if they'd used Android.

I take it Windows7 works OK on the Macbook Air 11 and has working drivers for all of the hardware devices (audio/webcam//touchpad/etc) ? Is there anything that doesn't work as expected?

Been having a look and I guess if I was to buy one the I'd be looking at the 11" model with a 128GB SSD and 4Gb RAM. The sticker price for this on the Apple site with educational discount (which as far as i can see i should qualify for as school staff) is, a somewhat intimidating, £1035 Is this the best place to buy it from or would anywhere else be cheaper?

I'm not really bothered about whether or not I get on with OSX though having used it in the store it seemed OK. Some nice features (the multi-touch gestures on the touchpad are awesome) and some not so nice (no native full screen mode in most apps!). I'll definitely be installing boot camp on the thing to run Windows7 alongside it so I can pick whichever one suits me best though. Just wondered what everyone thought of the hardware itself really? The only real downside to it at the momoent that I can see is that it's got a Core2Duo processor whereas I'd prefer an i3. Having said that a lot of ultrportable's have atom/Neo CPU's so in the scheme of things it's actually not too bad.

I've been contemplating getting myself a new laptop as I've been getting frustrated with the display quality, battery life and weight of my current 14" model. Initially I'd been planning on getting a lightweight ultraportable 11-12" model. Possibly something like a Dell M101Z or an Asus ePC 12" for around £500. I guess my main criteria was for something as light as possible , 4 hour+ battery life, NO CD drive and around an 11/12" screen with resolution of at least 1366x768 (I can't stand the 1024x600 you get on a lot of netbooks!). I know it's a bit of a jump up in price but I've noticed that you can get a MacBook Air 11" for around £800. I've never owned a Mac before but having had a play with one in the store for a bit last week it struck me as being exactly what I was looking for in an ultraportable laptop. Has anyone on here had a chance to play with one at work or own one? If so how are you finding it?

When you run the install I think you need to select "custom install" and tick the box that says "install for all users". IIRC this will redirect the relevant files into the "/Users/All Users" default profile on the PC rather than copying anything into the profile of the specific user who installs the software.

Whereabouts and what type of files have you noticed it saving into appdata. We've only got staff on running Cubase5 (on WIndows7 32-bit) at the moment but I haven't noticed any sizeable increase in their network profiles (maybe 20mb worth of Steinberg settings or so)?

Does anyone know of a good guide (with tips, Syntax, Keyboard shortcuts,etc) for using the Equation Editor in Office 2010. Our maths department have been using it as a replacement for Math Type but are struggling to get up to speed with it. I've had a look onthe web and in the Microsoft Office help website but couldn't seem to find anything that went into any depth?

I'd agree with that. The Windows7/RMSlate we've got is near unusable to be honest as a touch-screen device due to the fact that as an OS it was never designed for that purpose. The ipad works better as the OS was designed for touchscreen but it's ultimately too limited in it's functionality due to the OS being geared for use on a phone form factor rather than a larger device. IMO we're still waiting for the first truly usable Tablet/Touchscreen Computer. The stuff out at the moment is just a kludge of existing technologies shoehorned/upscaled into a form factor they weren't originally designed for. My personal thoughts are evreyone should wait for a re-skinned tablet version of OSX/Windows8 or Android 3.0 to see if this moves the game forward.

Yeah, the top c02 bracket post 2006 prices are pretty harsh so road tax would be around £450 pear year IIRC. Plus by all accounts you'll be lucky to get 20mpg so it'll definitely cost a good bit more to run than the Focus RS. I was tempted by one a few years back but the running costs scared me off to be honest!

They quoted us £5000-ish per year (for 1500 pupils) though it did include email bulletin support aswell as texts. Hard to justify it unless we start using it on a pretty serious scale though.

Yeah, I cant see us ever going for the full subscription unlimited text model as most companies seem to be charging around £5000 per year for it. We'll probably just stick with 4p per text when we require it for emergencies and use Email Bulletin's/Website updates for the rest of the information. When you send out a text you only get 160 characters so most of the time it's just a one line messge saying x,y,z is cancelled. We ended up usingAdobe Acrobat 9.0's built-in "Document>Scan to PDF [ocr]" function as an alternative.

Why not just buy an iphone4? It's better featured, fits in your pocket and you can make phone calls on it aswell!

We use a service called BulkSMS and run CSV exports from our MIS system to populate the lists when we need to send out a text to parents BulkSMS.com - #1 Internet Bulk SMS Gateway We looked at some of the options mentioned above but none of them tied into our MIS system (WCBS PASS) so the above worked out cheaper and was just as effective. If you have an MIS system that does integrate directly into one of the above systems that might be a neater, albeit more expensive, option though Edit: Just to add we're currently paying 4p per text message sent out (so about £50 every time we text all the parents in the school). At the moment we generally only use it for sending out school closure/etc emergency texts though there are discussions to use it more frequently. How does the cost compare with what other systems on here cost? Would be nice to have a comparision as many of the others seems based on a subscription (which they never give you figures for on the website!) rather than paying per text?
