I finally gave into temptation and bought one at the weekend! Quite impressed with it so far. The processor is ninja quick and the Camera's really good for a smartphone aswell. Lovin' Infinity Blade 2

I dont think there's actually much point in teaching pupils how computers work in terms of Hard drives,RAM, CPU's,etc. If anything it would probably be more useful explaining to them how the internet/websites/email etc work rather than the physical hardware. Mind you there are probably more useful life-skills which would prepare kids better than teaching them technical theory which they could get from a book if they were interested!

I'm holding out until Amazon bring out the Kindle Fire in the UK as it sounds ideal for what i want it for. I'd like an android tablet to play with and for general web browsing on the sofa but dont really want to spend more than £200 as I don't think it's something I'd use all that often.

There isn't really a single feature I'm particularly looking for. In terms of reasons for thinking about upgrading my iphone 3g the mains issues I have with are 1) the poor quality of the camera and lack of video recording capability. 2) The processor is starting to feel a bit slow compared to modern phones (for loading web pages/etc) and there's quite a few apps starting to appear which don't run on the 3G. 3) Apple have recently dropped support for it which means no further OS updates. Several folks have mentioned the Samsung Galaxy S 2. I had a quick play with one in the o2 store at the weekend and it seems really nice but I've pretty much ruled it out as an option becuse of the sheer size of the phone as I really don't want one any larger than my currrent iphone. A couple of my colleagues at work both have the HTC Desire S which seems like quite a nice handset so that might be another possibility. If I was going to buy a Android handset I'd probably hold fire until the first ICS 4.0 specific models start appearing though.

+1 We had loads of problems with Oliver when we ran it internally but since moving to the hosted version it seems to be working a lot better now. I suspect there might be better library solutions out there but if you don't want to move to another system the hosted solution is probably your best bet.

I've currently got an iPhone 3G and was contemplating stick with the 'dark side' and upgrading to an iPhone 4S! I was temped to make the transition to Android (my GF has an Samsung Galaxy Mini S which seems pretty good for a low spec handset). The main problem is that, as far as I can see, there aren't any other handsets out just now that are really catching my eye. Most of the ones with the same price as the Iphone 4S seem to have inferior specs/hardware. I guess there's the Google Nexus Prime which is about to be released but as much as I like the thought of a 1280x720 screen on a phone I'm not sure I'd want a handset as large as 4.6"! Has anyone on here got an iphone 4S yet? Are there any Android handsets that would be worth considering in place of it?

Yeah, was just gonna post them up aswell. Really disappointed that despite all the hype it struggles to outperform the equiavlent Intel CPU. The real rubbing of salt in the wound is that it's only on a par with the Intel i7-920 in half of the benchmarks! It's a sad state of affairs when AMD's latest and greatest can't even match the performance of a 3 year old Intel processor !

My personal opinion of the guy is that he's saying what he is basically to try and get people's attention for whatever reason. I think the question we NEED to be asking is WHY do we have an economic system that rewards excessive risk and is completely amoral. Never mind throwing around moral judgements about specific individuals. At least he had the nerve to go on TV and tell it like it is. As he said he hopes for another recession/boom as market volitility is the time when the most profit/loss can be made. He's just chasing numbers on a computer screen to try and maximise his profit and minimise loss. No different than any other stocktrader on the planet! The problem is those numbers on the screens represent the savings/pensions of millions of individuals around the world. Currently the FTSE stock market's just pluged 200 points to 4900 as doubts mount over the Greek bailout. Whatever happens the resulting fallout is going to be with us for years. The options being :- a) Bailout Greece - If this happens it's basically tacitly saying that other PIGs countries will also be bailed out. Though "bailout" sounds like a nice word and it would likely stabilise stock markets you have to remember it's ultimately a remit to print more money/debt and very high inflation globally for the next few years will likely be the result. b) Let Greece go Bankrupt - Stocks would collapse and and banks runs would be widespread as fear grips markets and everyone panics over who will be next in line to fall after Greece. Arguably b) is the morally right choice and quickest way to resolve the crisis but the resulting civil unrest could be much worse than a). For what it's worth I think option a) [or somekind of bailout/EU stability fund] is the likely outcome as it's less dangerous and will spread out the debt from the global property bubble over the next decade or so in the form of inflation. Don't get me wrong though. Neither option is pretty...... *The above is my opinion drawn from my somewhat basic understanding of economics!

Lol, only a Mac fan would have the brass neck to complain that a £200 tablet doesn have the same functionality as a £1000 laptop What Apple should be worried about is that on the face of it Amazon can, for less than half the price, produce a tablet that does 90% of what an ipad does. Plus with the tie-in to amazon online services and Android OS it'll likely do quite a few things that the ipad can't! I get what you mean about the limited functionality of most current tablets though. In fact that's the main reason I bought an 11" netbook earlier this yaer as I didn't feel that the tablet's out at the moment could replace a proper laptop with Windows/OSX. Having said that there'll always be folks out there willing to pay a premium to get Apple's tablet so there's a big enough market for both! As I said I'd be unwilling to pay £500 for a tablet at the moment but I would quite happily pay £150-200 for one if it contained the functionality I wanted.

The more I read the more I suspect he was just saying it for attention/fun or perhaps even personal gain. Bearing in mind that if he's bought stocks on the expectation that Euro will fail it's in his interest to promtote the idea that it will happen! I think that it's a masterstroke on Amazon's part putting out a low powered tablet. If all it's gonna do is let you play music,watch movies, read books and browse websites do you really need dedicated graphics, the latest high end CPUs plus tens of Gb's of storage? Sure, they could have matched the ipad2 by fitting it with the latest Nvidia Tegra tech/etc but that's the reason every other manufacturer has failed to topple Apple IMO. Pitching a competing product at the same price as the ipad2 would have been suicide. By selling for literally half the price it opens up an entirely new market segment IMO! I mean think about how it could change the way technology is used in schools if we could finally get a useable good quality £100-£200 tablet computing device for example!

Yeah, pretty keen to get my hands on one when it's released in the UK. I've never really been interested in an ipad or samsung galaxy as for the £500 price tag I've always felt it was too much for an internet tablet but at $199 it's much more appealing. Suspect it'll be closer to £200 when it's released in the UK though!

I'd agree. 1366 x 768 is fine for a 11-12" laptop but if I was buying a 15" model I'd definitely want something higher.

What with the recent release of Windows 8 BUILD and given the level of interest in the metro/touch tablet functionality in schools would it be worth creating a dedicated Windows 8 forum?

I like the fact that the revolights look like they could actually light the road in front of you and may you more visible to traffic as opposed to the money lights with are purely for show. In fact asthetically I think the revolights above actually look better than monkeylights to be honest!

I think they should probably go one step further and actually teach people what money is (effectively a government issued IOU note) and how it's created/used by banks. In my opinion it's the lack of understanding of this process that's caused people and governments to allow themselves to get so massively into debt to the point where it's become the norm and has come to a head in this latest "so-called" housing/debt crisis [but that's probably a discussion best held in another thread!]. Would appreciate a note of the model but I've been speaking to our AV technician and the projector in the Hall is a 'special' long distance model so I don't think we'll be able to purchase an alternative projector in this instance though most of the time I'd guess that's probably the best option. Has anyone tried any AV senders for use an existing wired projector over wireless?
