You're right. The font scaling was a real problem on Windows 7 (and even worse on previous versions) but AFAIK Windows8 scales everything in the 'metro/modern' UI by default so presumably it wouldn't be an issue. The only time you might encounter problems is when running legacy desktop software but the RT version doesn't even support this so it's a non-issue! Admittedly it's not the end of the world but put up against the displays in the ipad3 (2000x1500) and the slew of 1080p android devices that are hitting the market it relegates MS's surface instantly into 3rd place in the display department.

I like the look of those Samsung ATIV tablets. Obviously inspired by the Asus transformer. It'll be interesting to see what kind of of price they come in at with the atom processor and how that affects the performance/battery? Once again they've chosen to go with a 1366x768 screen on the above models though? Surely it can't cost them that much more to up it to 1920x1080? I'd let them away with it on a low end tablet for £200-300 but these things will likely end up being priced around £600. Is it really too much to ask!

If I were to get one I'd want it with the keyboard which is likely to translate into a UK price of around £500 for the 32Gb model. That's pretty expensive especially when you consider you can pickup a similarly spec'd Nexus7 for around £200! Can't believe they want £100 for the keyboard either! The device itself is really nice though and I do like the form factor, kick stand and bolt on keyboard. The only thing that puts me off it (apart from the price) is the relatively low-res screen. For that kind of money it should really be 1080p IMO.

If they just want to read notes/minutes of meetings/etc maybe something like a Kindle would be a better option?

Nah, they have 1Gb onboard DDR3. You wont be running any games on them but they work fine for everything else I've tried. Was there a specific reason/app you needed the video card for as apart from gaming/3D rendering or additional monitor outputs onboard video cards are typically pretty good these days?

We have remote access for staff as well via a similar method but there are always going to instances where staff claim they dont have an internet connection or compatible hardware/software at home to log into it. I agee with you on the point about consistency. The whole USB stick/Dropbox scenario basically boils down the the same problem of how to secure school data hence my thoughts that trying to secure the files/data at source and educating staff on the risks will probably ultimately be far more effective than blocking access to USB sticks and file sharing websites.

It's funny you should mention that actually as another staff member said the same about USB sticks which is a fair point. My response was that in an ideal world staff shouldn't really have to take school files off site. Going forward we should be looking at methods of staff being able to access school resources remotely rather than taking them off site or uploading them to other 3rd party websites. That way when staff leave they immediately lose access and sensitive/confidential data doesn't leave the premises. We do have it written in our AUP that staff taking sensitive files off site on USB memory stick are expected to encrypt the contents but I suspect that very few people actually bother hence my concerns about them mis-using dropbox and other file sharing websites. Being practical blocking USB storage devices isn't something that's really feasbile so I suspect the answer to that one (and file sharing sites) might be to do something like making sure school files are stored in something like sharepoint rather than file shares so we can be more granular about what staff can do with confidential files (eg blocking printing, copying to USB, etc.)

More and more I'm thinking that it's definitely something management will need to go through with a fine tooth comb as opening up internet acess to the level some staff have requested has some pretty far reaching legal/political implications that is beyond the scope of what can be adequately filtered by purely technical methods. Does anyone have any details (acts,laws,guidelines) of what our legal obligations as a school are when it comes to filtering internet access for staff? I'd previously have went to Becta's website but with them now gone is there anywhere else that would have that kind of information published to save having to start trawling the .gov sites and reading through individual acts?

Struggling to decided whether to pre-oder this or not. The concept looks really cool and being a fan of DayZ I'd love to finally get to play a finished Zombie MMO game. However looking at some of the gameplay videos it's obvious that the game is still in alpha as a lot of the basics still need serious work (zombie animations/AI, sound effects,etc). That and some posts on the web are even going so far as to claim it's a scam and simply a quickly thrown together mod of another game (War Inc.?) in order to cash in on the dayZ craze. I hope the devs do take the time to complete the game as it looks like it has potential though.

I think this is the key question. How much responsibility do management want to devolve to staff in terms of giving them access to sites like the above that will contian potentially unsuitable material and allow staff to upload confidential/sensitive information. The worry I have is that we can tell staff to be careful what they view infront of the pupils, what websites they use, and what information they upload/write on file sharing/blogging sites but from a technical point of view there's no way we can actively police or enforce these rules. I'm concerned that if we allow/endorse staff to use sites like the ones above then we literally won't know if they're being mis-used until something goes wrong. All comes down to risk vs flexibility at the end of the day I guess...

We're a combined primary/Secondary school and our pupils range from 5-18. In terms of the above sites they're only really looking at what staff should be given acess to at the moment. I'd imagine staff are planning on using the sites (wordpress,etc) in front of pupils in class.

We've been in discussion with SMT regarding reviewing our filtering arrangements as we're coming under increasing pressure from teaching departments to allow them access to categories such as :- 1) Social Networking (Twitter,LinkedIn,etc.) 2) Blogging/Personal Pages/Forums (Wordpress,blogspot,etc) 3) Webmail (Hotmail,Gmail,etc) 4) File Sharing (Dropbox,skydrive,etc.) We'd be interested to know whether your school makes website categories such as the ones above available to staff?

Gave in and bought a copy today! I'm not really sure about the latest expansion, espcially the whole kung-fu panda vibe, but I seem to be compelled to buy every game Blizzard release and I guess I'll need it if I ever start playing WOW again so why not

Decided to bite the bullet and buy Arma2 so I can play DayZ. I realise it could be out on standalone soon but I've spent the last 2 evenings watching videos of people playing it and I'm off on holiday next week so why not I'm unsure which of the 2 installers to use though. Would you guys recommend using DayZ commander or Six Launcher? I bought it via steam if that makes a difference. Any other tips for a noob!

I spent 2-3 hours playing it at the weekend but I'm struggling to get into it to be honest. Does it open up much after the first few hours play as it's starting to feel like a grind IMO? Just seems like WOW but not as polished on initial impressions?

Never really paid attention to the Arma games as ultra realistic military FPS's weren't my thing but the day Z mod looks awesome! Trying to decide whether it's worth stumping up £25 for arma2 combined operations so I can play it! Do you guys reckon it's worth it for the Day Z mod? I've noticed some rumours saying there's going to be a standalone version of the game released so I'm wondering if I should just wait for that?

There's a couple of new games modes,a few new/revamped weapons but in the main it's pretty similar to CS:Source. The graphics engine update is undoubtedly the main thing. Looks way better now but thankfully still manages to run at a decent frame rate. Really enjoying the beta so far so it's looking good for the release.... We had a problem with a share on our file server the other week and ended up having to temporarily re-assign and change the drive letter of our main file share. Since doing that all of the FSRM quota templates have vanished? The quotas themselves are all still there though. I've been trying to find a guide online that describes how/where FSRM stores these templates but haven't had any sucess so far. I'd guess it would be saved in a location in the Windows folder (system drive itself) as it presumably wouldn't make sense to store the templates on each drive individually so I was surprised when these vanished? Does anyone know how FSRM stores the quota template data and if there's any way we can recover these quotas?
