Hello, I was wondering if anyone has a large scale Windows tablet deployment? How do you use them? What Windows OS do they run? How many do you have? How do you get on with installing apps etc? What are the pros? What are the cons? Any other comments? Thanks

We purchased some Linx 8 tablets in Summer last year (as I took over as NM) and they've been sat in their boxes ever since. The old NM had a way of imaging them, but he's been back in and we can't get them going. The headteacher has asked to have them set up as standalone devices, solely used for web browsing. Obviously internet filter tracking is going to be my biggest problem. I've created a VB application that opens on login, requests the users name to continue and then records it to a txt file on the C: with the date and time. But I can't help but feel like I'm still opening a whole can of worms letting these on the network without being connected to the domain. I've already told the HT that his idea would work, in theory, and he's keen to get them out ASAP. Thoughts??

Hello all, Is it possible to completely wipe a tablet running Windows RT to one running either Windows x86 or x64? I've heard that the ARM chip can process x86 commands when jail broken (not something I recommend), but was curious whether or not it can be achieved? If not then what use is a Windows RT device when it cannot run Flash out the box (limiting the number of websites) accessible and cannot run any existing locally installed applications a school are already licensed for? Thank you!

I discovered this a few days back, but was waiting to try it out on a few more apps first. Pinch and zoom works for web browsers (IE and Firefox), Word, Publisher and all other office apps, image viewers and from this I can assume that it is standard for all apps. This is (I presume) a Windows 7 feature, but is still not as slick as either Android or IOS platforms. Also you can expand the onscreen KB to a useable size, but it is still pretty awful compared to tohers. No haptic feedback and little indiction of the keys pressed, not to mention that the key 'illumination' feature that highlights when a key is 'pressed' suddenly stops working at random intervals. Come on Microsoft. If you want Windows 7 on slates to be used as a touch device you really, really need to get to work on it to smooth it out to the level that the competition have acheived.

Hi everyone We've just recieved our first RM Slate 100 and have installed Win7 Pro on it. We're having trouble with drivers. Windows 7 doesnt seem to have them and the RM website won't let me download them ( have put in a request but says may take 1-2 days!). Does anyone have the drivers I could download? Cheers James

The automatic screen rotation is driving me nuts. How do I turn it off please?

Has anyone used the Iconia W510? The reviews [and the Atom processor] aren't filling me with much confidence and we have a few that may be ordered soon. The intended use is: - Emails - Some typing - Internet We've been quoted about £400 each, which is cheaper than [company] are advertising them, but 400x[amount] is not money I want to spend on something not fit for purpose.

Hi all, The head of my primary school wants a Surface or something similar to use on the fly, during meetings and when she's off site etc. Obviously as we all know, Surfaces are pretty expensive and there are a host of Windows based tablet alternatives. But I've not used any for any real amount of time, so please give me some advice on which devices to recommend to her if you have any experience! It must have: - Windows tablet OS (Rules iPad + Android out straight away) - Would be nice to have a keyboard - Not a HUUUGE screen like on the Samsung ActivTabs (or whatever they are called) - Must have Office pre-installed (Majority of them do have this now don't they?) Also can anyone shed any light on something for me? Can you install '.EXE' programs and the such on the tablets now? I know on the original surface, the ability to install things, was only available on the Pro edition of the device. If this is the case, any recommendations where the ability is there is a total bonus! Here is an alternative I've found, any opinions? http://www.ebuyer.com/579702-asus-t100ta-pc-t100ta-dk002h Thanks Liam

Hi all One of my schools is the first to dip its toe into looking into Windows 8 tablets. It's for primary school use so a good camera, 4 - 6 hour battery life, the potential to attach a keyboard and the need for it to be fairly robust are key. We've had a look at the Lenovo Yoga which is interesting, but may have more features and flexibility than we really need. I'd like to see what other schools are using and if anyone has any makes / models that they'd particularly recommend? Thanks in advance

In case anyone hasn't seen it yet, here is a short preview of it in action courtesy of Microsoft. TBH, it looks a hell of a lot easier to use than the Windows 7 interface which, TBH, was designed to be used with a mouse/stylus for the most part. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92QfWOw88I&feature=player_embedded#at=243

Anyone using them? One member of staff has asked for an iPad (take iPad as a word for portable solution) and I am thinking a Surface that they can login as themselves and they get their emails and files. We have a CC4 network but I am not that bothered about it being CC4'ed

Were looking to order a good few of these before the end of the month to take advantage of the offer but had a few queries you may be able to help me with We plan on using them for our staff, possibly students but depends on management Anyone used them for staff to replace a staff laptop? Good results? Can office 365 accounts be set up on them, especially in outlook on 8.1 and skydrive pro? How do you manage them? Do you need antivirus on them? Any advice before purchasing them? Cheers sorry for all the questions!

We have 30 Surface RT's here and I am at a loss with them at the moment. I see two options with them. 1) Use Local accounts on them, they can be used for web browsing, office suite. Prevents use of Apps. 2) Use a shared MS account on them all. Can use Apps using this method but it requires a sign in at the start and my concern is, what if the MS account password is changed. Will that lock all 30 surfaces out? Please can someone with knowledge of these things get back to me on what I can do with them. The head is pushing toward shared (trolley) use.

[RANT] I hate Microsoft!!!!! whys nothing simple with them one of our surface pro 3 is just doing a cycle reboot, I tried doing the restore option ( which worked on the others) But this one keeps getting stuck and restarting. So it looks like I need a Recovery Image... Microsoft website has instructions for this, go in select device enter serial number but then NO its a enterprise hardware you cant have the device image this way contact business support. Phone up Business support, talk to a lady who takes the details and passes me on to surface support tell him the problem oh you need to be through to Surface business support ill transfer you. Back to the lady again who wants all my details AGAIN ( is it conected to a domain or standalone) neither since its not booting up to be told that there is no direct lines to business support and i would have to go to support.microsoft.com/OAS to book a return call. There is no where that I can see to book a call just a list of numbers and a uk one which is the one I called earlier. Any one have a secret number? Or can I make a recovery image from another surface pro 3? how will this affect the windows licencing as theres no key on the back of the machines?

Hmm. It seems the genric Windows Bluetooth driver isn't cutting it and I can seem to find it on the RM Slate driver download site here: RM Slate 100 driver collection (Microsoft Windows 7 - 32 bit) [M11JB / 0ALC269 / 0GMA500 / AR9002 / AX88772] If anyone has one to hand and can check the make/model of the Bluetooth module and let me know that would be very helpful.

After a bargain? Grab yourself a Linx 7" for £39.99 off Ebay before they all go Just grabbed one for my youngests Christmas pressie. Linx7, 7" Windows Tablet, 32GB, HDMI, Bluetooth, Intel Quad Core & MS Office 365 | eBay

Hey guys, I've got the Microsoft Surface 3 (Not the Pro version) and I'm currently on holiday, I loaded a bunch of stuff onto it like books and films to watch while I'm relaxing in the sun! Sorry to rub it in 😁 Though I'm having some issues, I think the device is overheating in the weather and turning itself off, it does get very hot to the touch but it's annoying as my other half's Samsung tablet isn't overheating. It's running Windows 10 Pro and will just turn itself off after 10 minutes of use in the sun, so annoying. Does anyone know what I can try to do to use it in the sun? I think it's pretty poor design that Microsoft want you to use it as a tablet but it so easily overheats 😞 Thanks in advance guys!

Hoping to put a bid into management to see if they can get me a Windows 8 or 10 tablet for network management. Mainly for going round our other sites, setting up wifi, testing connections etc etc. I will upgrade the OS to an enterprise version as I could do with direct access. Whats the cheaper alternatives to a surface pro 3 as they won't pay for one of those. Looking at something like Asus Transformer Book T100 Thanks

Well, we may as well get started somewhere so why not here: Disable bluetooth if you are never going to use it. It'll save a lot of battery life. Reduce the screen brightness to 25%. It's still very usable and will, again, save battery power. Disable the screen rotation effect in the Millenium app. The graphic processor is so poor it can't handle it, and just blanks. If you disable it then screen rotation occurs quicker. Disable screen rotation (this is personal preferance). As the sensor is so sensative it just makes sense to do this, otherwise if you rotate it too many times too quickly Windows just refuses to play nice whilst it catches up. Any more to add?

Saw that RM are doing these for £233. Without descending into Apple/Windows 8-bashing, am I missing a good reason why (if SMT have to have a tablet in addition to a laptop) our school shouldn't at least give these a go? As far as I can see they should have all of the functionality (and more) without the downsides. Not that it seems that any logical reasoning would work as I was told that it is the expectation of SMT that the school provides them with an iPad. Pretty annoyed as I'm being expected to take what amounts to a pay cut.

How are people managing app installs from the Microsoft App Store on Surface RT tablets? We're at a bit of a loss as to how to do this sensibly, on shared devices, without giving our 'pupil' account on the devices access to the Microsoft account.

I've been searching for hours to understand why both Ghost and Acronis True Image boot CDs do NOT work on my "Lenovo Tablet 2" tablets. I finally found the horrible answer : my tablet has UEFI and is 32bit. If it was a 64bit tablet, I would then be able to use the boot CDs. I can't imagine there is no solution but I never googled so much for a solution without finding a hint of an answer. I found somewhere that it should be possible with the whole and heavy Microsoft solution (SCCM and stuff..) but to be honest, I was hoping for a solution similar to the one we've been using for years here : setup windows the way I want it and then do an image. The heavy Microsoft solution WILL be adopted into our enterprise but we're not ready for this now (we're really slow when it comes to this kind of changes and I am not allowed (nor have time) to venture into this in this time of the year. Wouldn't there be out there a simple boot CD that DOES BOOT into this kind of situation and allows me to image the whole disk? Thank you!
