  1. Would be interesting to hear about the installation.
  2. Anybody else having this? We got our quote yesterday, and when i enquired as to available install dates i was told late october/november at best There is no self install option so we will be paying silly money for the install too. Just seems a very long time to wait, just when you think you can have it all running by september If they are charging close to 1000 a day for installation, how they do not have more staff for installing this stuff i do not know. O well typical Capitas. Nothing goes to plan.
  3. Is there anyway in Windows XP to get the MAC Address of the Wireless AP the user is connected to? Would like on our laptop trolleys, for the correct printers to be added depending on where the laptop is, only way i can think of that happening is with the MAC of the AP as the location identifier. Any ideas?
  4. Mobile Fun - Mobile Accessories, Phones, Ringtones & more! will sell the proper batteries. You can get those little keyring chargers that run of 2 small AA batteries and charge up your mobile. They work.
  5. Current way we do things is ANY Laptop / PC that comes in, its formatted and XP Pro is installed from the network either as a scripted install or as an Image. If it has XP Home, we buy an upgrade licence, if its Vista business we are covered with downgrade rights. Next batch of laptops are all coming with Vista Business licences, and i thought instead of doing the usual thing of installing XP, i might give Vista a real go , since Windows 7 is going to be using same technology going to be no escaping the evil. So if i create a Vista image and blank them all, how do i go about this silly product activation, as XP Pro did not have this on Volume Licence CD's, but all Vista's do .
  6. I bought both, i did have the white one in the frontroom, but did not like all my electrical equipment being black/silver and that being white, so bought the black one for frontroom and put white one in bedroom. The black one seems to run quieter, looks nicer, and the bigger hard disk , thats about it. Get the black one
  7. How do you get vb.net to read the figure that is displayed when you right click on a drive and do properties, under free space? We can get free space of a drive, but its slighly different to the figure displayed there. Was wondering if there is some code to just read the figure from there.
  8. I went back to RIS/WDS on 2003 Server, found the WDS Multicasting was so slow! Took longer to image 80 Workstations using Multicasting than the normal WDS way. Plus i missed having RIS too, and you cannot do legacy mode on 2008 Server
  9. There are two start menus Per User Per Machine You can turn off the showing of the per machine one in group policy. Edit: Its User Policy>Administrative Templates>Start Menu & Task Bar>Remove Common Program Groups From Start Menu
  10. Might be better of going to one of your smaller computer shops, as they will give a more personal touch, and give you XP.
  11. The XP Licence when with a sticker on the computer lives and dies with the computer, its not per user. There is no RM Version of XP, if its XP its XP and you have a licence for it on that peice of hardware You can get an XP Upgrade Licence with volume licencing for about 30 quid.
  12. To quote bossman "What I can tell you is that apparently Gordon Brown and David Cameron have agreed that up to wave 6 will still go ahead even if there is political change." I'm in wave 7-9, and your even later so it might not even happen.
  13. If you have an old Xbox you can turn them into a Media Center XBMC // You can get them second hand for less than 40quid in places like game station.
  14. Do not suppose this PING offers away of just altering the differences? We've used RIS/WDS for years now for image deployment, and i do like it, but i've always thought it would be good that when you update an image, then redeploy it, if you did not have to re-deploy the whole 20-30GB image, it would just alter what has changed between the orginal image and the new one.I can live in hope
  15. OK, erm, what if the school did not tupe the technician for example. They take the old servers and hide them, and keep them to one side. Who owns the new equipment from the managed service? The school or the company with the contract? If its the school then there is nothing stopping using old servers and the new equipment?
  16. only thing i can suggest is you install 2003 server on another box fresh install, then follow the same procedure on that box, if it works we know somthing is really wrong with the config on your server, if it does not then there must be 1 tick box or somthing your missing.
  17. The way i understand it is if you want the BSF Money for your school you HAVE to have a managed service. My head has been a meeting today with other heads, and she is very strong that she does not want a managed service and she wants it to remain in house. She will do everything she can to keep it that way. With the school not wanting this, what i do not get is whats stopping us letting the managed service install all this nice new shiney computer equipment then wiping the servers and workstation and putting our own setup on again? My line manager says if thats what it takes that is what they will do.
  18. Could use disk protection from the Shared Computer Toolkit, does not matter what they do to the computer, reboot and all is back to normal.
  19. Yes its easy if you follow this Video. Installing PHP5 on Windows 2003 and IIS6 | PHP | Web Technologies- VideoTutorialZone.com Runs nice too, i run Joomla on IIS.
  20. Sibelius does not like running in a TS session if you use that.
  21. There is a tool just made for you out there and its free from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx Its just finished the 2.5 Beta, so 2.5 should be for download as final any day now, so hold off until then, but you can lock down settings on a per user basis on a standlone, workgroup enviroment, disk protect, very handy tool.
  22. How can BECTA expect us to have any respect for them, or take anything they say as without laughing when they do things like this?
  23. Got to see CC4 at a conference yesterday, i'm not an RM fan, but i have seen CC3, and CC4 looked like a big improvment, felt to me what CC3 should have been, the managment console looked so much better than the rubbish one in CC3 because it was an actual application, not a web based app.
  24. Walking to the other side of the school to flick a teachers wireless button to on.
  25. HP 6720s's come with XP Upgrade disks (cannot really call it a downgrade can you )
