Also Quake 3 was/is an 18, so not really for use by kids, which is a shame because it is fun. Medal of honour is safe at 12

How is your job effected with BSF? As tamworth is the test place for BSF and staffordshire.

Ended up costing about £12,000 in total, that was £8500 to Capitas and the rest for Sharepoint licensing and the Dell Server, plus extra public IP's. Only staff using it really at the moment. They like it, we have been using terminal services since 2003 for SIMS access from home for staff, which they still use, they just like the fact it come be done from any PC now easy, as its intergrated with the intranet page. We have the student one ready to go, but senior managment want to check all comments in the conduct/event logs first before kids see what staff have written about them. Same with the parent access. A few kids have figured out how to get to the student page, and love being able to see there own timetable, event and conduct logs. The fact it integrates with Active Directory makes it so much more powerful. Only con is the consolidation of 2 accounts. When you populate the SLG with students it creates another active directory account. You have to consildate them into there existing network login. Its easy to do though. We use moodle for our VLE and use this as our intranet. Working well so far! Only real con is capitas support is so bad, so i'm hoping for staffordshire to support this product. I spoke to the sims team and they said they would have a best attempt go if capitas were being a pain.

We have got Capita's own version now, hosted on site, noticed at the last staffordshire meeting one or two were not happy they could not write to sims from SLN2. We you at the staffordshire meeting last week jimmckenna ?

We have a few games like medal of honour on (did it out of my own money, GAME have 3 for £10!) , the way we do it is using group policy set a file permission on the EA Games folder. We have a group for each IT suite, so "Games Room 6", has permission to enter the folder and nobody else, then we just remove or add "Domain Users" to the group "Games Room 6" to enable or disable the games. They just log off and log back on once we have added domain users to the group for them to work.

Our school wanted Sky Sports (being a sports college) until they found the cost out.

We have it installed here onsite self hosted, it works with AD very well. Just do not expect a speedy response if you need support, as its really bad. It does adjust the schema. With the student accounts you can consolidate their sims login with there network login, so it all links in. It all works well, just a shame its so over priced.

We have 1 x 32 Laptops Trolley 3 x 30 Laptops Trolley 1 x 20 Laptops Trolley Plus 5 seperate laptops of odd use stored on a member of SLT's desk. Giving us almost 150 for student use ontop of our 4 30 machine IT Suites and other small suites, which is good considering we only have 480 pupils. We got our first in 2006, and teachers have gone mad for them, and would scream like mad if we took them away now. They just love them, and the kids too. Damage has been minimal, but its always going to happen. Just buy one, see how it gets treated in your school. We are lucky, our kids look after the PC's and laptops generally. Batteries will go, nothing you can do about that, but our first laptop trolley had a fresh batch of batteries after 2 years, at £29 a battery, so did not cost too much. Keyboards are also an expencive one to replace, sometimes costing almost £100 each! If a screen goes we write the laptop off and use it for spares as the cost of a new screen is the same as a whole new laptop almost.

They are using it for IT to grab sound clips using Audacity while playing, also in music too. The non legit use it to listen to songs, but the staff say they get on with the work whilst they have youtube on in the background, so suppose there is no harm if they are getting on with work, and i have seen this for my self.

Both students and staff have access to youtube, its being used in lessons lots. Its now the 2nd most popular website after google now according to my proxy logs.

Does anybody know of any software for testing science students that is hosted onsite? We have heinemann KS3 testing software from years ago, which is still used and is good, but we only have year's 8 & 9, and because they no longer sell it we cannot buy year 7 . They only sell their new version which they host not us, and then you pay a subscription. We do not want "hosted" versions of this, and i'm struggling to find an alternative which we can install on our own servers. Anybody use any?

I find my brain hurts just trying to do file managment in Vista.
-
I'll wait for the finished one before casting judgement, as my main issue with Vista is its poor performance, and you not going to see its true performance in beta's. All i want is the performance of XP, clean interface of XP, LESS Wizards and "You've moved the mouse, are you sure you want to move the mouse" style treatment.

Do you not have a Home Drive? We set ours to N:\Favorites , as N: is always their home drive.

Does it have AVG 8 on? In last 2 weeks i have had 2 people i know have this same issue, and for some reason AVG 8 was the cause. Uninstall AVG and internet worked again, re-install AVG 8 and all is still fine.

Sharepoint Learning Kit External Access
Quackers replied to adamt82's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Did this issue ever get fixed? I've done a work around by setting our default to the external address, but because when internal we point it to \\servername for integrated windows authentication, when they click the assignment link they have to login in again as it points to the external http://www.*****.sch.uk domain. -
I can find on google people who have 2 quick launchs, but have no idea how they got it and they want rid. So it is possable somehow, but its gotta be some duplicate reg key somewhere causing it.

How is the printer going to work? The fire has burnt through the network cables..... The best solution i think, is to have PDA's in docking stations that just sync every X minutes with the most upto date registration info. Fire alarm goes off, they are just grabbed whilst leaving.

Have they fixed basic things such as displaying what software it is installing at startup via group policy like Windows 2000, and Windows XP does or does it just say "Please wait...." for 2 hours? If i had an hour with Microsoft my head would hurt telling them everything that is wrong with Vista, and what needs to be changed in 7.

It kinda fits in with this thread, what do they mean by "Real Time Reporting" Does the SIMS Webparts currently provide this with Assessment, Attendence and Conduct Log webparts? or do they want an actual report?

I would have a look over at the RM Communitys Forum. Was browsing in there the other day and some people were having issues of builds not working if they built more than 4 stations at a time. Might be the best place to look to get a real feel of issues current users are having.

The most heated we use to get was a good old Vanilla vs RM debate, now some things get extreamly heated and not in a light hearted way. FFS! Forum posts seem to take up 80% of the recent threads screen. With the exception of the Sophos incident i cannot remember things getting censored before, and rules did not seem to pop up like they have this time. Its still a handy site, even if i do pull my hair when using the sites wiki, infact i was swearing at it last week trying to find what i wanted on it. I'd get rid of the FFS forum anyway, venting rage of a forum may not be the best place, its like recording yourself smashing somthing up, it might get seen.
