Got a problem, and i've never had it before with this software, so its confusing. Basically anything i package with this software works fine. Will run. If i edit anything in the registry section when i import it into Winstall for editing then resave it, it breaks it, and will not install saying Error 2715. The event viewer basically says that too, so not much help. I've tried re-installing Winstall LE on another PC too to see if that was the issue. It does not break it if i edit shortcuts or files, it seems to be registry only. Anybody else had this? or can recommend any other good software for editing/converting software to MSI's?

Not sure. I've got the Volume Licence edition of Tablet edition but never used it. Presume it comes under the same agreement.

Anybody know of any existing web based tool to reset passwords on Active Directory accounts? Currently have a customised Managment Console that just lists the Student OU in Active Directory and staff have permission to reset passwords for the kids. Were having Sharepoint Server soon, so i'm wanting to make the staff portal be a one stop for any tasks they have to do, are there any web parts out there for this or any other web based tool that will do it. I've attached a screen shot of our existing program to do it, so you can see what i'm trying to achive web based.

Do you mean the screen thats blue and says Windows is preparing setup with lots of dots...................................... and the dots just keep going for ever as it stays on that screen for ever.......................................................................................................................................................................................... if so, i had it too , i gave up, and moved to WDS, and WDS does not have this issue.

No, i think you should go down the laptop trolley route. Were putting our 5th laptop trolley in this summer, staff would go crazy without them now. They are used so much. Staff love being in there own room and having all kids on a computer. In september our total will be 160 laptops for pupil usage in trolleys (and 205 PC's for Kids, not bad for a 490 pupil school). I have as yet to see the issues raised in this thread be an issue in the 2.5 years we have had trolleys. Battery power - Make sure you get the right batterys when you buy and they will last all day. Our current ones last every lesson with 2 lessons, 15 min charge (break), 2 lessons, 50 minute charge (lunch), 2 lessons. The acer 80% rapid charge in 1 hour feature helps here. Wireless - We sometimes have almost 50 laptops to 1 Access Point. The kids or teachers do not complain of slow down, and they work just fine. That might be because as much as possable is stored locally nothing comes up and down the wireless if it does not have too. No roaming profiles, profiles are stored on laptop, so its just the group policy setting and drive mapping. After that traffic is just internet and my document/shared area access. Parts - We have had a few keys pulled off, we bought 4 keyboards at £400. We just replace the key not the keyboard, if the orginal key cannot be found and the spring is bust. So far these have lasted the few occations We also have had 1 screen go, we just wrote the laptop off. So its not an awful lot of cost in the years we have had them. Plus you can now pick up half decent laptops for less than £300, not like 4 years ago when you were talking £1000 almost.

Thats the way i started off when we changed to Windows XP in 2003, but 6 months in the head of ICT requested i made it so students could not customise, as it was confusing him when the kids moved the my computer icon to somewhere else than top left.....

We use it on every managed PC in the school, so all class room suites and laptop trolleys. FOR THE DISK PROTECTION PART ONLY. We image the machine, then we just turn steadystate on manually at the end, and you need not worry again. We use to use the old version of it to. As for the comment as its designed only for standalone machines, nothing could be further from the truth. The manual even covers using it in the domain environent. There are also scripts to do bulk turning on and off in the forums on MS's site. I could not imagine not using it anymore. Its fantastic.

WDS is driving me mad! XP client deployment problem
Quackers replied to cheredenine's topic in Windows
Multicast has to be from a Windows 2008 Server WDS, not a 2003, and if you run 2008 Server there is no legacy mode. I went back to 2003 Server as the Multicast seemed a lot slower, even though i know in theory it should not be. -

You will need the .wim file from the actual Vista DVD/CD(s) I'm sure i read before Vista was released that they could lock say Dell Vista disks to just Dell for example using this new format. You can get the Volume Licence of Vista for about £30, then £15 for the DVD. -
Mandatory Profiles in mixed XP & Vista environment
Quackers replied to FN-GM's topic in Windows Vista
Vista roaming profiles have a .V2 extention so i presume mandatory ones work the same, so you could have Administrator and Administrator.V2 . So i presume if there are 2 Vista would look for the mandatory profile with the .V2 at the end. How do you do your mandatory profiles? Default User in the Netlogon share? If so i'm guessing a Default User and a Default User.V2 in the netlogon share would solve it. -
You can tell the RIS server to only respond to certain clients. You do it from the Remote Install tab on the Computer account in Active Directory

Not sure if it will do it, as under XP/2003/2000 it just made it go into more detail, but have you tried it with Verbous mode enabled? Should be under Machine Group Policy.

Its easier having 6 images and running XP then having 1 image and running Vista. Unless of course you like the word "Welcome" for 5-10 minutes on your screen with a animated circle..... Please wait....... Please Wait...... Please Wait......, and o Please... wait some more......

Just wipe it and install XP like every one else does who gets a laptop poisned with Vista.

Rights to OEM versions of applications software are granted in the OEM License Terms. The OEM License Terms for OEM versions of applications software do not grant downgrade rights. Taken from Microsoft.

thought i would give it another go a few weeks ago, it made my head hurt just using it, no joke, i had banging pains, its vile. When Vista was first out i tried it on some PC's and on those it did seem quicker than XP, but i have lothed it ever since, its horrid. I would rather use Windows NT 3.51, at least its not clutterd and hard to use like Vista is.

Yes you can, you open it up and put some tape over 1 of the pins on the wireless card. Works for us on all laptops we put in laptop trolleys, just a matter of finding the pin of that model of intel wireless card.

I must be old fasioned, but even though i have an Xbox 360 for every TV in the appartment, i also have a dedicated DVD player. Cannot stand using consoles for DVD's, i like to have a proper box, with nice lights and screens.

You need to follow this How to add a third-party OEM network adapter to a RIS installation May take a while first time, but when you've done it loads it becomes second nature. Also you said you syspreped the machine. If your using RIS, you should be using the RIPrep tool in the Admin folder on the Reminst share.

If your going to do Option 1 that geoff suggests, move it to IIS, we run our Joomla site on IIS and its quick and runs like a dream. Can link to a video tutorial if you want to get PHP working with IIS too.
