  1. Start a rumer that your looking at other jobs because of pay. Worked for me, started on £11,500 in sep 2003 asked for a pay rise went to £14,000 in 2004, then asked for another in 2005 and went to £16,500, then i started asking for job application forms in 2006, that got back to deputy head who was very scared at the thought of me leaving and put me on £21,300 which i'm on now, and with job evaluation round the corner i fill all the boxes for the £27,000 to £31,000 pay scale, so i have my fingers crossed. Do you get along well with the people high up? that normally helps too.
  2. Could be wrong but if you ran ripprep on the server to image it, would it not rip all the data like machine name, install key etc out and when you rebooted and come up with the mini setup?
  3. We have 4 laptop trollys totalling 115 laptops (as well as IT Suites) and our staff would go mad if we took them away, they are always in use, by english and maths most. Must have been bad setups in these other schools to come away not wanting them.
  4. If you are going to use them as part of your domain i would also make sure they come with the Intel Pro Wireless, as they have a pre logon system which makes sure the wireless is connected before the user log's on.
  5. Thanks timbo343 , thats working just as i want. It is going to be difficult getting the idle time just right. But if you do say 1 30 PC suite not in use for 1 period, plus the left over X amount of pc's where there are not 30 in a class, the power savings will be quite large.
  6. To try and reduce our electricity bill, the powers that be want the PC's to shut them selfs off if say its not used for 20 minutes. I've played with the Shutdown screensavers available which all work fine if somebody is logged in, but they do not work from the main windows logon screen, they normally count down to 0, then either, go to -1 -2 seconds and never shutdown, or come up with shutdown failed. Any ideas on how to achive this goal?
  7. Nothing wrong with XP, Vista is the first OS MS have ever pumped out i have actually hated. Office 2007 is great. Vista poo, we have 6 licences for vista here, so i could evalulate. I do not like Apple Mac's never have, but i hate Vista too, so where do you move to, i cannot stay on XP for ever.
  8. After the way i'm currently detesting Vista so much, i'm considering moving everything apple mac, cannot be any worse. God i hope i can skip Vista all togeather.
  9. I do resespect you webman, cause i think your web skills are very good, excellent even, whilst like you say it is an educational network, not corporate, Windows 2003 is designed for? Corproate. Putting RM Connect in the middle wastes your departmental budgets. (sorry just come out of the sauna pissed). A few more clicks is worth it my book, 1 click more for you gives english the books it needs instead of wasting the money buying an RM licence to do the same thing. When i started at this school it was RM Connect, my head of IT was VERY scared when i said dump RM. But he was VERY happy, when in the EARLY days of RM Connect 3, he came back from a meeting with other head of IT's at other school, where he could say power button being pressed to desktop fully loaded was 50 seconds, yet CC3 users were upto 10 mins. Sorry an RM Performance Pack sorted that, cause there were "Issues" , so if you paid a bomb for CC3, it will get you logged on before the lesson finishs now. Only place RM Connect 3 is for is where you have no ICT Tech onsite, as CC3 slows your down, it gets in the way, its for monkeys.
  10. I use to like RM Connect in the Connect 2.x and RMNETLM days, when there was just cause to somebody paying for it even competent system managers. After all , what management tools were out there for Windows 9x? You had System Management Server but that was aimed for NT 4 Server and NT 4 Workstation. Most educational software ran on Windows 9x only, which out of the box came with no security, no real managment software, except poledit, which lets face it was easy to get around. Also NT 3.51/NT4 had a very flat managment system, just look at the User Manager, the RM Connect 2.x implimentation of it was very good, gave you what active directory gives you now in a way, you could put users in folders. Also gave you Software Distrobusion software, Quota for File and Print, which NT 4 lacked, the tools were all fast and responsive and looked nice. Microsoft made vast improvments, and i do mean vast, they gave with the OS almost everything you need out of the box, and what did RM do, drag their feet!!!, what happened to an RM Connect that supported Windows ME? Windows 2000 Pro? With a 2003 Server and XP Pro client i can do almost everything a CC3 can do, but can save £100 per client (which is RM's price on the website), and also save on the server side licening which must be £1000's. We have 400 workstations which would cost us £40,000 extra MINIMUM in RM Connect licences. How can anyone justify paying that much for RM Connect 3? The excuse of it saves time is no longer there, the only extra you get is Printer Credit's which Pcounter do a solution for a 1 of £400. Want to push out new software, open the group policy for that OU, add new software, select MSI, a monkey could do it, even without CC3. Look at the Windows forum on the site, people asking about WDS, RM Connect does not use this, but a tech using a vanilla setup will learn and increase his/her skill set, so not only will they know RIS which CC3 does not use, but WDS, so *if* they leave education, they know what they are doing in the real world of Windows Deployment, not RM Fairy Land. As for 200 lines of code to map a printer, i'm affraid i do it in 3. Like i said at the begining, i use to like RM Connect, but now its a waste of money. Even then RM Connect 2.x was not really secure, i left school in 1998, was not allowed on a networked PC in last year of high school, was a "threat" apparently. Went to college where they ran RM Connect 2.3/2.4 Same things RM File Protector peice of piss to get around, you could use the Replicator account to get write access to the C:\Winnt folder on the servers, and thats after they realise you know the Admin2 account is set still to "changeme". As a pupil growing up around RM when i was at high school, i know how the kids feel about them in my own school and why they vandalise the RM equipement but not the other equipment in school, cause its RM!!!!
  11. Until they break, which so far seems to be a long time. Got our 10 orginal Acer's from 2001 still going strong and every laptop since. If it is not broke, and still runs Windows XP, Office etc fine, why change it?
  12. Run away.... its made by the devil himself.....
  13. Black TFT's with White base units and keyboards? 8O VILE!
  14. Go to Power Control Panel, and enabled Advanced Power Management.
  15. Go with what Monkeyboy says, what he says in right, in a dual channel board which lots are, you get better performance with 2 sticks of ram, as you need 2 sticks to make use of the feature.
  16. The school i am at was in special measures 7 years ago, and they had more money given to them to try and help. Some of this was used to buy new pc's/servers make the suites look better.
  17. We give years 7,8 & 9 £1.00 a week. Mono is 2p a sheet, Colour is 20p Years 10 & 11 get £2.00 a week. These are resets to this amount. not additions.

  20. Think Joomla would be your best option.
  21. Never got that far, could not read the buttons.
  22. I tried to run Sibelius 4 from within terminal services and i could not get it to work, all the graphics would come up screwy.
  23. Yeah its apache, do you have any simple instructions as to what i need to do, i'm an IIS person, its only Joomla and Moodle that run apache here, rest is IIS.
  24. and save this file where?
  25. We have a box just for a joomla site, and i wanted to host another one on the same box, which works fine. The original site is in the www root, so i just created another folder for the additional joomla site called cyc in the www root. How do i get the domain to point to the /cyc of the webserver?
