Staff and Post 16 Students have access, Yr 7 to 11 students blocked - but they find ways around it as always!

We have a Paxton Access Control System - this has a lockdown feature which last time I enquired, it means that it would put all doors on lockdown or both entry and exit, so everyone can remain secure in the building. I was going to use it for our holiday periods so they didn't open during the normal school time zones, until they told me it disabled the exit button as well! I'm looking for some king of messaging system, so that in the event of anything emergency, a message could pop up on the screen.

Hi Can anyone confirm what firewall ports are required for the Google Classroom App to work from an iPad? Looking at wireshark, it seems to be 49429 ? The site works through Safari but the teachers want to use the App and got a feeling it's using different ports. I cannot seem to find the list in google documentation? Any help appreciated, so I can get a firewall change request done. Thanks

Sorry if this is off the record but question regarding photographers and working in education!! Has anyone been asked to do photography for the school, and been paid for it? If so, how did they go about it, and was a business interest form completed??

You can have a DHCP server that isn't a DC

We still have students who play tricks on us with the optical mice! They push a pen up the optical part which pushes the red LED up off the circuit board! It's only when you take them apart you see what's happened and have to push it back down again to make it work again!

We've just recently bought TextHelp Read & Write (Site License) When they first showed me the site license cost I thought it was extortionate, until I found out it was either per PC (expensive) or a Site license, nothing in between. Departments are yet to use it intensively, but will be used for exams.

Hi Do we have to ring up Microsoft to get KMS keys for Office 2016 to install on the KMS Server? If I look under our licenses Office 2016 is not listed. I've ran the installer from the licensing site, but I get activation error 0xC004F042 in the event logs. I have more than the minimum of 5 workstations with office on, so not a minimum number issue. Apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere, but when using the Classic Start menu & GPO for Windows 10 PCs, how do you hide the Administrative Tools start menu folder for users so they cannot access? Also, it appears in 10 they can open some of the tools in the administrative tools folder, does this need to be changed in normal GPO settings, as on Windows 7 they couldn't see this folder. Thanks.

Whenever I do server OS upgrades, I ALWAYS do a clean install, no upgrades. I just boot from the install media, delete the C: drive partition and boot partition, install the new OS, and once up and into windows, the data drives are still there with all folder permissions (once re-joined to the domain).

Pleased to hear you have had success with Laser Links - we didn't! We started off with purchasing a 1GIG link to link our Post 16 centre to main site as couldn't dig the field up initially, and it was terrible! Alignment kept going out and whenever the engineers came to site they said it was aligned - then blamed the seagulls dropping the link haha! They then installed a 100meg system which was meant to have more tolerance, was better but still dropped out. The sites were only 350m apart so not a great distance, but I am glad it's now a hardwired fibre link! Not sure what the issue was with the links, but they tried to secure to several parts of both buildings to improve stability, let alone the foggy mornings !

If you are using SOLUS 3 this should be noticed when the upgrade is done. On both our last release updates through using SOLUS 3 only, the File Server part has reported as 'failed' and this is still with the Capita servicedesk waiting for a solution.

never been an issue here, if staff need to use an IT room for training, I just remove the policy. In some rooms for TA's I exclude individual PCs from the policy so staff can log on next to the student to help them which stops some of the complaints. They just get used to it. AS for the C: drive, I have hidden for all students to stop abuse, but is still there for staff, just in case it's required, as sometimes it's useful when sorting issues on staff logins.

The only time our head was consulted was when we made the decision to only allow staff logins on staff computers and student logins on student computers, but never really been an issue, as no reason for students to be using staff PCs, and was to stop them logging on to play music etc in the classrooms.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but surely if you are in charge of the network, anything security related is your decision, as if anything were to happen it would be on your shoulders?

We had the same problem - however it's not a flash issue. in IE you need to ensure the tick box is selected to enable sounds in webpages. I have it set in the IE GPO settings so always enabled for all users.

This is becoming a pain! yesterday morning our website (internally hosted) was coming up with an error 500. Checked the server, nothing in event logs. After an hour or so, website returned and was OK all day. Come in this morning, users reporting same issue - website unavailable, error 500 - intermittently available. Have tried rebooting the server, restarting IIS, re-adding the fastcgi config to PHP, and re-creating the application pool. It's so intermittent, as was OK between 10am and just now - when I get a report from monitoring software that the website is down again with the error 500. What's next to try?! Server has been running happily for a few years, no changes, no recent updates, first time it has happened. No disk errors, CPU usage low (5%), 55% ram usage.

None - although we (Techs) use VNC to monitor classrooms - any students not working, send a screenshot to the teacher for them to deal with. Gives them more time to teach the students than controlling there access / monitoring.

if I recall correctly, once the IP has changed, you have to reboot the network interface from the old IP web interface for it to start responding on the new IP?

I find that using VBScript that the printer sometimes doesn't always show up for the user immediately when they get to their desktop if want to print something straight away. we have to tell them to wait a minute then it appears. I would have though that once the drive had been installed the first time the machine is used, that subsequent logins should be quick and printer appear immediately as the drivers are already in the local machines driverstore folder.

We use censornet but MS update servers etc are set to bypass the proxy so probably why we didn't get any issues

Seems a bit odd as we don't have a direct internet connection, only through a proxy server so when I install it wouldn't have been able to connect to the net, but didn't see this issue when testing, so seems a bit strange why you would have experienced this.
