I once got a department head in tears as her HDD went belly up with all her planning. Said I could do nothing with it so she went to the head in tears, he said, get it sorted. When I said I had been quoted £1600 to have it recoverd he said, get it sorted. (which it was) When I got it sorted the Bursar spat her dummy out and ranted and raved at me saying it was not up to the Head to authorise spend theat money. PC or Laptop? Dual output or VGA splitter? What Graphics card? Graphics vendor "Applets" installed? Have you tried rebooting with the computer connected to the projector? What modes does the projector support and likewise the graphics card? Tried pure 1024x768? TT

2008 I belive was the deadline set for all schools to have a VLE. What that generated was a bunch of companies peadling half cocked systems that did not work. At my old place management barreled into a decission for a system despite massive reservations from our team, we were told in what was supposed to be a review of the idea "We are buying it, make it work" 2 years later the vendor folded and at that point it was not even workable. The haistly aquired replacement lasted 18 months and the replacement for that for which we also had no input was just as bad! £50-£70K of money wasted, technical time wasted, management time waste, teacher time wasted... At this point the whole idea was more than just a joke and trying to get staff on board with anything else was going to be a battle. The government should have invested heavily in developing moodle as a common platform, paying 50 developers 30K a year would have been better spent than thousands of schools wasiting 10-15k a year on failied solutions. My organisation is a SME with 500 Active users runing office and multiple bespoke applications with lots of data. We dumped all the complexity of ISCSI/HBA's/FibreChannel and have switched to plain NFS over TCP/IP. Admitidly we moved to a 10Gb Switch with 2x connection to each device giving 20Gb. as for shared vs local storage... Only used local for test systems for the last 9 years ( 7 with school, 2 with the SME ) everything esle is on shared for swift migration either in "Situations" or when work's are required. TT

WINDIRSTAT has long been an excelent tool for quickly tracking down large files. FSRM with quotas works well generaly. And also asking form tutors to point out that it's a breack of both copywrite law, and the AUP that you have asked the pupils to sign. TT

Personaly... As I have a 2830 and can't think of anything else to replace it I would say 2860n Not much help. TT

Yeah if the lap is amber/red ( if it even has one ) then may just be soft disabled. It's also possible the Antenna leads are not connected to the wifi card. TT

I could easily spend 20K. What I would try and squeeze in. 2x Physical hosts booting vmware from SDCARD ( Dell 730XD's are good for this ) 1x SAN/NAS that can do NFS ( We now use this ove ISCSI as it's faster, more flexible and easier!) Idealy have 10Gb to the the SAN and Hosts. Idealy have this duplicated to two switches with something like "IRF" We recently got quoted 10K for Dell R730's with 196Gb of ram a couple of spinning disks and 2x18Core XEONS. Just one of these could easily host 36 general server VM's without issue. But we are using them for Citrix Xenapp. TT

My experience of My PI is that the file system is very sensetive to power failuers. Car power delivery is neither clean nor reliable. TT

BT provide ISDN over fiber if the distance requires it, or on 2MB SDSL "2 wire leased line" copper if it's closer to the exchange. SIP is over 20 years old and should be supported by any system installd in the last few years. With 10 years to plan and the likly hood that there will be backpedaling by Providers as the dates loom I don't think it will be a big problem TT

4-5 VM's per host, that is a very low count. Buy two machines with extra memory/cpu so that you can run all guests from one server in the event of failure. TT

I work with HP switches in my job, when we upgraded the cores in the summer we were forced to go with HP as the product specification meant the HP's were cheaper ( purely because Cisco had one cheaper with not enough ports, and one more expensive with too many porst). It's hard to convince a manager with the word's "Because they are better" . Unfortunatly I have had 4-5 situations in the last 6 months where I have had to utter bad words about HP switching... As for Servers, we go Dell. Even our supplier who was always keen to do HP has happliy quoted for them and not been able to match the price/spec with a HP. Personaly, I would go with VMWARE Essentials Plus Kit. It's cheap and gives you all you need to run 3 Host servers. Plan to have as few as possible real physical servers and get everything virtualised. TT

Having said the above... You could always have a PROXY server with two lans, one on the GFL and one on your new routable VLANS. That's how we had it from 2000-2008 until we moved from the GFL. In fact we continued more or less the same even afterwards even though we had full control of our internal and external routing. TT

Yes most probably if you want them to have internet. The router will be expecting perhaps one subnet. without knowing about the other subnets with static routing it will assume all unknown adresses are out it's default route and in the instance of a private subnet they would be dropped. So the GFL need to add a static route for each vlan. You maybe lucky and they have pointed the whole of each private subnet range at whatever your internal L3 device is. Do you have a firewall between you and the GFL router?? TT

Well we survived the weekend with no major incident up here. I went for a walk yesterday, in the park there is an underpass with a Plaque showing the 2005 Flood level. Looking at the level of twigs and leaves stuck in the gate at the other end it would seem the level was ~1FT Higher! The river is still very high and on the flood plains but it's shocking how low it is compared to how it was 3 weekends ago . TT

If the battery message has gone away without replacing then the Write Cache may be disabled, which will impact performance. TT

Online Disk rebuilds have been arround since at least the PERC3 shipped in the early 2000's . If the battery fails the controler should switch from Write-Back to Write-Thru mode to prevent the chance of the cache not correctly flushing to disk in a power failure. However if the battery is marginal it may fail during a change. For safety if you can presently switch to Write-Thru or disabled on the cache the do it. Disks need to be the same size or larger for replacement, but additional space is wasted. We have had ~10 Disks fail this year.. TT TT

UTM's free for home use. It's fiddly mind! I used to love sophos, but they are letting us down left right and center on many products at the moment. TT

are you doing it CLI GUI OR Menu I would go with "Menu" as GUI has more bugs than london zoo insect house. CLI sometimes does not give proper feedback. Menu also updates the startup config realtime. Also check if the bootloader is loading something othert than the startup config, I can't remember if Procurve supports different startup configs. TT
