Be very careful Countless times I have had people asking why the new phone is not powering up on their 48 port POE switch. They have not looked in to Demand, Consumption and availability of POE power... A switch may be 48 Port POE but that may only be able to deliver 5.4w per port . 65 speakers at 15.4W ( max for normal POE ) is 1Kw of POE which is way beyond most switches can deliver ( although that would probably be between two switches.. But add in phones as well and your drawing more.. ( + wi-fi, cctv ) just keep it in mind that you can't just plug all the kit in and expect the power to be there. Also many devices will not tell the switch what power they need so the switch will just reserve 15.4W POE or 30W POE+ regardless and take it out of the available power budget... Don't try to do it on the cheep, or it will ultimately be a white elephant. Last piece of advice.. Two hand held bells is better than one for redundancy. TT

Why complicate a bell? How loud is a POE speaker ( POE+ can deliver a Max of 30W but not all of that would be amplification) Do you have +? probably need a speaker per classroom really. Do you have a decent time source? What with the cost of a switch, lots of speakers, getting it reliable, and more.. Seems to be trying to re-solve a problem that was nailed decades ago. TT

Yeah just looked. They can do 802.1q vlans via Smart Web Management. but have no Routing ability, this could be left to the utm/router though. Or a new L3 ( lite) capable switch. TT

Ahh, FS/GS are totally unmanaged from memory... unless they have basic WEB management. I think there should be a review of the network infrastructure before adding to it. Last time i bought an unmanageable switch was probably 12-13 years ago. TT

I have used both ubiquity and deliberant kit for links across town providing internet to some business areas that could do little better than 512kb DSL. Even without pure line of sight we could get 30Mb over half a mile, backhauling over wifi to a location with fibre. Another customer had 4 pairs of redundant nanostations providing distrobution from a central tower to 4 branches. Easily getting 50mb to the one 2 miles away.

most LCD's use one of a few standard connectors. So if you have anything else kicking arround it may be worth opening up a few and comparing connections. Often it is just a cable reseat though, or perhaps the cable has got damaged. Do you get any boot logo? With a failed backlight you should be able to just make out the login box. one tip for anyone reading... If it's an LED screen, remove PSU and Battery and discharge the laptop as the chance of popping the micro fuse to the LED backlight is high! TT

Yeah, I think they can do MSTP, but for this section of the network we would have to go through design and evaluation to get that changed. And in fact as only 2 ports are used on the switch now ( 1 to a firewall, 1 to the 5700 switch) I am probably going to suggest we ditch the switch in the middle. No Zy products, tried to use a switch on a customer site once when self employed. Never again. Still have fond memories of our old D-Link DES-6000 core chassis that we installed at my 1st school, must have been circa 2002. was a real step up from out Planet 1U switch that kept locking up once a month!

5700... It seems to be difficult or near impossible to get any decent SNMP data out of the HP which is a real PITA when we have monitoring of most of the rest of the network. It has no visual status indicators for the overall health of the switch. Only port 1/2 - 13/14 15/16-31/32 are labled The port jacks don't have their own status indicators, they are all above the top row so it can be difficult to determine if a port is live. Comware programming is half Cisco mind set, 1/8th Procurve and 3/8ths randomness... HP should bring the two together but I doubt it will ever happen, so interoperability with their ProCurve needs thought. Trying to find decent accurate guides on anything to do with comware seems to be problematic, and some contradict others. On one of our other parts of the network which is managed for us, we do have some Catalyst 2960's with PVSTP which are not compatible with MSTP. So I had to force the 5700 to be an edge port. It just feels and looks a bit Zyxel too. Having ASA's and Cisco Routers too I just find having 3 Platforms that are all not quite compatible a real pain. Generally I found that CISCO was always well supported by 3rd Party developments. Procurve Less so, Commware less than that. TT

The 5500 is not Procurve it's Comware. I have 3 5700FF's would not exactly rave about them. 5400's ( are Procurve ) of which we have 5 in service, they are being resigned to edge port duty certainly don't rate the non "R" model and we recently discoverd you need 4PSU's installed in a 5412 to make it power redundant on all switch ports ( even before considering POE... I still have a fond affection for a Cisco 4507R-E , but they now do many 1-2 U Units that can cut the mustard just as well. And the fixed config switches DO ( despite what many say ) have lifetime warranty. TT - - - Updated - - - The 5500 is not Procurve it's Comware. Define your BYOD before considering wifi. AC is only really any use on Laptops, mobile devices are going to have a slow takeup as it kills battery life.

I am waiting for my 5 new R730's to arrive some time today..... 256GB and dual 18 core.... not got round to shiffting stuff in the testing rack to get them in.

So much choice now. ours runs 3x24 disk shelves, 4 disks are SSD for cache. 30TB ish useable.. Combined with upgrading to 10Gb it has cut many processing jobs to a quarter of their old time TT
