We implemented a complete phone ban in may and as a school we’ve had to do a lot of work with students on social skills. Weirdly it feels longer than may, maybe we had a partial ban in classrooms first. Computer use has gone through the roof and there have been a heavy load on resource bookings for things like cameras. Another local school found it so hard that they let students use their phones at break time to pacify the kids.

Only good thing about cpoms is everyone uses it and is very easy to transfer safeguarding data between schools when they move around. Managing it on the other hand is a royal pita

Interesting! Noticed edulink has no tutor groups in one school but the other seems fine. Been looking into this on and off today but everything looked fine!

Inset tomorrow (28th) students back Thursday 29th. One day later than the usual Tuesday after bank holiday rush so it’s been nice today to get some last minute jobs fixed. Inset day is the worst day of the year. The amount of requests you get that have been sat on for 6-10 weeks is ridiculous.

We had a similar issue we had to run a command on sql to clear the error. Tech found the fix. Sadly I’m off today and he’s also off sick! Not much help but might get you on the right path.

Don’t put in technology for one individual. They’ll get over it.

The problem you have with something like crowdstrike or similar EDRs is that you are essentially collecting data from end point threats to get an organisation wide picture of what is going on. You simply can’t use multiple platforms to that. It’s not just about malware it’s also about if Joe in finance is suddenly doing something that isn’t deemed normal behaviour. Trying to login to 100’s of servers from his device etc and that applying a response (most likely automated).

Also when you aggregate them you have to do consecutive ports so ports 1 and 2 NOT 1 and 3. (Edit: Just realised there is no aggregation going on).

Just to note the 1g are rated for 550m and the 10g are 300m. Are you sure your runs are not more than 300m?

As mentioned in this thread smooth wall instant alerts are very good and we’ve found cloud filter in hybrid mode to be very good aswell, Especially getting all those pesky game sites that use sooooo many tricks to bypass web filters. I also think Smoothwall reports need a bit of development focus as there is a lot of noise that gets generated in the background these days. There almost needs to be a filter to reduce the noise in reports but I suspect a lot of their effort is going into the cloud filter and improving the functions in that. For 99% of our needs we find alerts to be sufficient but then again we don’t have half the problems others school might have with regards to behaviour issues.

I think modern monitors are a lot weaker. Our dell p2314H monitors from 2014 have stood the test of time pretty well, anything past 2019 and kids breathe on them and they crack!

Pretty much our recent experience. Mirrored the SIMS launcher link in the portal to reduce the number of clicks users were having to press to get to sims. Worked a treat.

Me personally I never want to see students using computers all the time. It’s really not healthy and I don’t think outcomes will be better.

If you use the English installer which is actually en_US you may find you have to install en_gb language files during install. Took us ages to realise that we actually should be using the international iso!

You can never get rid of damage but you can reduce it. It’s a lot of hard graft and especially worse in the winter months. It’s definitely worse since covid. We are having a school wide push at the moment and slowly feel we are moving in the right direction. Staff who own a room tend to be better but it’s always those classes (GCSE PE) that don’t respect the rooms as much. We inspect the open areas for damage 5 times a day as we find damage breeds damage and deliberate walk around classrooms we know are going to be a problem while being used by difficult classes. We also have some key areas where we 100% know we can get a “conviction” due to location of cctv above pc’s. Students are billed for a full keyboard as well as sanctions even if it’s just 1 key. The key is following through and educating them because often they don’t see the harm. With the walks around site I can find the person on cctv within 5-10mins. But again this would all be pointless if you haven’t got the backing of senior leaders!

You’ll probably see on prem boxes requiring less and less resources which should bring down the price of the on prem box.

In short and in my opinion look at a risk register a bit like you would a classroom risk assessment. Include as many potential risks as possible, It should include mitigations and what you should do in The event of it happening. It’s something that you should review and build over time. It will help you and senior leaders understand what has been done and what needs doing. If you are starting from scratch focus on a small area at a time. In the event of something happening on the risk register you should be able to use it as your go to place just as a reminder to yourself what you planned to do if such an event was to occur, compose yourself and implement actions.
