1st of all you need to work out what you need to monitor once you know what applications are an issue make a list of what that application relies on. I generally find nothing beats Event Logs (perhaps an app is reporting no privileges to do something?), Resource Monitor and Perfmon for monitoring/troubleshooting slowness . Setup a screen dedicated to this next to your normal workstation. use the connect to another computer option so you can monitor client and servers that you suspect. get your people complaining to phone you as soon as things go slow. Start at the client end, perhaps they just have too many things open? local disk under load (AV scanning?/windows updates ? ) application at constant 25% 50% 100%? perhaps something gone iffy with an application causing it to use too much cpu in the background (word is a good example it doesn't like being updated while its still in use and I've had to reinstall it) is it an application that is using external resources? SQL? check CPU/Memory usage. SQL CPU usage should be spiky not constant mountain ridges (I've seen applications hanging due to SQL under extremely heavy load). hard drive Queue lengths should not be over the number of drives in that volume.

As I was starting to spend more and more time using server 2012 I thought it was time to get my head around 8.1 made the jump today on my laptop (desktop runs mavericks). I can see its going to be very important to get users to customise their own start menus. I've got about 10 apps pinned, for the rest I just hit windows and then start typing to search for them. The only thing that is really annoying me at the moment, if desktop IE is open, it will open the desktop version, if it isn't my shortcut loads the metro version.

Really great news, just about to purchase licences for our macs running 10.6! Apple needed to do this as they were starting to get users spread out from 10.6 to 10.9 which was becoming a nightmare for developers. Seems Apple are going to go down the in-app route to claw back money (garage band drummers testing these waters?)

From what I can tell if you go out of range it remembers where you last saw them. I like the fact if you mark something as lost, other people can find them. I don't like the fact you are basically renting them on a year by year basis as you have to pay for new 1s when they run out of charge.

as for your meeting questions. missed that point! you probably need to get an understanding of the scope of the project. from an IT point of view at an early stage you'll need to get an idea of the process and how much you'll be involved! find out what type of build it is too. Ours was a design and build (in my words make it up as you go along with the contractor) Wikipedia says it better or Design-bid-build. Obviously you need to know your budget and what its responsible for. Usually there is a building inc Fixed cabling, Fixtures furniture/fittings and then a separate IT Budget that your decisions will knock on to. all of which i would expect to have some say about especially when it comes to areas effecting IT use in the building. Get an understanding of who else is on the project ie consultants, project managers etc. Getting the right team around you early on in the project is worth its weight in gold, find out who is going to make decisions on these things and when. Get out and see other colleges/schools buildings with senior leaders learn from other peoples mistakes! Finally if your going to be doing a lot of work on the project, find out who is going to do your day to day work. If they want it done properly ensure you have someone who can take on your work load. don't end up like me and making yourself Ill by the end of the project from doing 50+ hour weeks for over a year.

make sure the core containment runs around the building are larger near areas like comms rooms etc. we have a standard size and although they were spec'ed to allow for 50% extra cables in reality near server/comms rooms they are very full and hard to work with. Ensure vertical containment is also easy to manage and silly piping isn't used! for any key areas like the server rooms/IT suites request "as fit drawings" include Elevations where possible and especially each wall of repeatable spaces. for example Teaching Walls. If you think its going to cost alot of money or be a Pain in the ass to fix get detailed as fit drawings. dont assume anything, when planning High level data points you need to know what type of room fittings they are going to be (we have some rooms where we can access data points easily, some others are above roof spaces (false ceilings) and a little more difficult to get to. my other tips.... request from your senior leaderships you are given access to the new buildings very early on, from their point of view "progress photos" were a good excuse for us to the contractor and that they (with agreement of the contractor) allow you to go to site at least once a week. you'll find you'll probably get an escort around site during the more dangerous times. Always ask about any on site risks specific to that day Getting to know the builders on site is vital (ie the "site foreman" type or what ever their title is called), Get as full of a site induction as possible and try and secure your own set of PPE from the contractor (Personal protection equipment). I found this gave greater freedom later on, they tend to frown on bringing your own. get a camera thats useable with full PPE (Hardhat, gloves, glasses, Hi-vis) also good for low light conditions. Take lots of photos, the bad the good and the ugly. DO NOT underestimate photo evidence. photograph everything and keep good records of how areas look at each stage. take note of any damage ASAP especially if your involved with any signing off. Photos are great for showing others that are not on site issues and also getting others ready for the move to the new building. if i can think of some other things i'll post later, dinner beckons.

Don't forget to make sure that you take into account ext 112!!! When we moved to our new building the phone guys forgot about 112, 112 happen to be my extension, and it was actually calling emergency services instead...

what Anti virus? also are you seeing the same issues in IE and firefox? we had an issue with sophos safe filtering+IE. it seemed that sophos safe sites filter was failing to contact sophos and would eventually time out and the page would load fine after 10 seconds.

They are running windows 7 64bit, in the end i used an external drive from a windows dvd to test which driver i needed as i was bored of the Inject driver, update distribution point wait for WDS to start/fail, remove problem driver, rinse repeat scenario. anyway this is what did the trick (not sure what the probems were with previous drivers!), it was the Intel mobile express sata raid controller and i used the following. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=20110

Finally sorted it, was indeed a driver issue. eventually found a driver that worked.

Its not often SCCM beats me, but this time it has (for now). SLT have all got some nice shiny new Sony Z13's (i7 4GB ram and SSD), not my choice but its what the head wanted. Realtek NIC driver Injected into the Boot.wim without issue. Then the TS started failing at the format/partition task with 0x80070490 error (great 1 MS!) Easy, so i thought. Tried Injecting Drivers from sony site for the Sata Raid + Intel® ICH7R/DH SATA AHCI Controller which at 1st was causing issues with WDS failing to start. download from intel site seemed to inject ok and WDS service now restarts without issue. The SSD drives in these machines seem to have 2x64GB SSD so im not 100% sure how these should be configured in the TS for it to work properly or if i still have a driver issue? any ideas or pointers in the right direction on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all we are currently running Cubac (8.5 i think) and Call manager 8.0.3 and im struggling to set the time it takes for calls to trip over from Unity (194 Call Handler menu system) > Cubac Reception (ext 6800) and then to our overflow in the admin office (Line Group Cubac_overflow). We would like to reduce the amount of time a call sits in the Cubac queue from 45 seconds to 30. I thought it was the RNA Reversion Timeout that needed to be changed, but the changes didn't seem to take effect. so any help would be greatly appreciated!!

oh and get it signed off as complete before installing any equipment to server rooms, some monkey re-programmed our entire site during deployment, server had all equipment installed at this point. entire site air con turns off at 7.30pm............. cooks server room. Thankfully someone checked the server room as the site was being locked up at 8pm to find it roasting hot! had a couple of Issues on the SAN but that was it.

My tips: Make sure you know the drawings off by heart. If it looks like a point is in the wrong position, get it changed (sounds silly i know but our IT Consultant kept saying drawings were for numbers and the guys installing it would use common sense and spread them out on site). get an understanding of roof heights early on. we had some high level data points put in the most silly places where a room next to each other had different height ceilings. Get access to the new site early on, I had access to ours as foundations were going in, make an effort to get the builders on your side. this will ensure you have better access later on. (progress photos is a great excuse btw) make the effort to look in every room as the building goes up and especially take note of where data and power is going. Builders (all trades) can be thick as 2 short planks and will put their dirty kit on anything. photograph ALL installed machines and fixed furniture as they go in and ofc any damage if it happens (photo evidence rules) don't be naive and think the builders will be gone when its your turn to install your equipment. Install minimal equipment to allow building management to work to minimise RISK. Allocate a room in your existing building (old server room is good if its big enough) for your 3rd party IT Supplier to work in and to pre-stage Server/Core network equipment for the new network and easily test Data migration. again this gives you nice early access to equipment and the engineers that will be building it for you. (allow budget for improved power/security and Insurance cover) If you are indeed working with a 3rd party to install equipment as soon as they start delivering/deploying to site you need to be working on site too. This is a good time for the rest of your team to step up to the plate and run the old network for a bit. get a work area on site with internet access and VPN back to other building. Ensure your current data is ready to be migrated. remove any old users and associated data. Have great backups! Be prepared for worst case scenario of a delayed opening and a 1 week Half term migration its doable with man power but very stressful. (ok ok worst worst case is Xmas break!) Be prepared for some really long hours, Eat good food and drink plenty. we had 4 weeks on site support when we went live, ensure any on site support stick to doing the more technical issues if SLT don't like how they've cabled something up, make sure its at the bottom of the list. you'll have to re-cable stuff anyway and its a waste of their time. And remember you cant be a super hero and do everything! (if your bad at delegating you best learn now!!)

I have a 120gb as my system drive and use a app that transfers my main steam games I play from my storage drive to the ssd. Would work just as well for splitting up your data across 2 ssd drives or more.
