So, out of curiosity how much are you planning to spend per Desktop this year? We are planning on replacing 145 Desktops across our site this Academic year (our financial year aligns to academic year) and will most likely use the same platform we chose last year, Dell 9020 Micro units with Dell P2314H screens which were a pain in the arse the 1st week we got them kids were moving them about all the time but as I expected they tend not to even touch them any more.

my rule of thumb for email is if it's going to take more than 1 email to resolve then call the person and get it sorted verbally with a follow up email to confirm(ass padding). I see so many people sitting behind email as the only way to communicate with others and it can take a bloody age to get simple things done.

You might have issues with your wsus, but I'm sure to properly manage Windows 10 updates you also need to apply a Wsus update which is only available on 2012R2! so it might be time to build a new wsus box running 2012R2

Paxton net2, we have both our cashless system integrated into it for syncing cards/users and a custom piece of software that monitors our turnstiles and marks student AM roll call. Works really well. We have server on 1 vlan and doors on 2 other vlans across our 2 sites. The reason why Paxton don't support vlans is you need to be on the vlan to setup the door controller. we use a popular security company to purchase and install. I then configure the door with my laptop(with the net2 configure tool installed) as engineers lack the networking knowledge to complete. Oh also make sure you get the correct type of rfid system I think there are Paxton and mifare card readers(I think). Mifare are obviously going to be compatible with other systems. We sometimes get the wrong readers installed!!

I believe Only time 2 Dc's on 2 separate clusters will only be an issue is if you have a cluster shared volume storing your Dc's and you are recovering from a full power loss to both clusters or a rare event that takes both cluster down at the same time.

I would also ensure the new Cluster has its access removed from the old 2008r2 Cluster Shared Disks to prevent the 2012r2 Servers from claiming the disks. I think I did this on the P2000 Controller itself.

I knew updates could be set to distribute to other clients but Don't recall any info coming out about this option in windows update to also allow updates to be sent to machines on the Internet and it's set on by default!!

Depends how many you have and if they are in cages? We don't have any projectors but sounds like a good excuse to give them all a good clean while they are down too.

we have 6 hosts on our p2000 San no issues with the p2000. Only thing I can think of being an issue is time frames/uptime requirements. We created a 2nd cluster shared volume as we needed to keep some vm's running and moved 1 at a time during maintenance windows for that service. Migrate vm off each host, evict node from cluster, upgrade, add to new cluster. Rinse and repeat

im assuming the xibo clients are using a proxy address? If so you need to find a way of configuring the xibo clients to not use the proxy. We add all our internal servers to the auto proxy cfg script as exceptions. In assuming you can add bypasses in each xibo box?

I've actually found edge better than IE11 at loading sites like our sharepoint 2010 site. IE11 needs to run in compatabilty mode otherwise admin pages fail to load, Where as edge just works. There is an interesting video on channel 9 explaining edges tech and approach to choosing which rendering engine to use.

I think it will be tied into azure allowing home users to upgrade to windows 10 edu while they are a member of that institution. Allowing users to take advantage of school licensed apps etc through azure AD. The key part is setting the deadline within each update on wsus. Select updates right click approve for the group of commuters you want to roll it out to this then gives the option of right clicking and setting a deadline.

1st of all get your machines into groups in wsus if you haven't. Go through updates each month and set deadlines for each update. I always set the deadline 30 mins or so before the end of the day. avoid important school events. Avoiding servers obviously after each patch Tuesday send out an email outlining the benefits of patching, why you do it and the easy steps they need to follow(suggest they do the same at home) Suggest that they press shutdown when they leave at the end of the today or tomorrow to do the update. Tell them that on xxxx date the deadline will pass for this months patches and their machine will forcefully install and restart their machine. Give them at least 10 working days and make sure the deadline happens at least 30 mins before the end of the day to make it an inconviemace they can't ignore in future. If anyone moans explain to them you have them plenty of notice and the policy isn't changing. By the 2nd and 3rd months 90% of your machines will be patched by the 1st weekend.

Get in 8.30 Quick look at email for any urget emails. Remind myself of my tasks for the day Check help desk and make sure any remaining helpdesk tickets are assigned to appropriate team members. Within the 1st hour of the day I like to check in with the library helpdesk make sure there are no obvious issues around site that haven't been reported. im a great believer of getting out around site. 2hrs in coffee! And another check in on emails and start on my project work. I like to get any further meetings I need doing in the morning before lunch. Afternoons tend to be a bit more Productive again projects are my priority but I still manage to get through a lot of support tickets from my desk to help techs. 3.30pm I tend to do my site maintenace (we all have assigned areas of the building to maintain) 4.20pm spend 10 minutes organising tomorrow in asana. 4.30pm home! We use asana as our project management tool to manage the teams workload we transfer any large support tickets from our helpdesk and schedule the job in a asana project. some of my day to day tasks evolve scheduling of work. Especially as we have so many large projects on the go that we are trying to complete in term time. All electronic communication regarding projects stay with the project in asana. Only when we need to communicate to staff outside of the team do we use email/helpdesk for communication purposes. (Project sensitive info is also transferred from emails so we can find the right info) Projects tend to be documentation based between September and Xmas updating our 1 and 3 year plans, annual reviews, quotes for budgeting purpose and initial schedule of work for the next 4 terms oh and reviewing internal documentation ensuring its up to date. Term 3 tends to be quieter meetings with suppliers and organising competitive quotes. Place any orders. Term 4 we always aim to start the deployment of our transformation plan. So this term we started to build our new virtual server(hosts), and start the deployment of our 130 machines. Term 5 more of the above with another large project (new 6th form) starting to ramp up as contractor should be onboard. Term 6 - we always build and test new disk images for summer deployment as we like to live test in a few areas before the holidays. Hoping to migrate any non-critical services to new platform and build any new servers. Summer hols - year end processes (yawn but I'm the only person who can do this properly!), have some time off with my kids. Server/desktop maintenace, Deadline day for our maintenace is exam download day and try to ensure no downtime after that.

Why is it so hard to find cheap laptops with SSD drives... It seems if you want an SSD drive with a laptop you have to go for higher end models with higher end features. All I'm after is 4GB i3 a decent dual band wifi chipset 128 SSD 13 or 15inch. Anyone got any recommendations?
