Print server hating on random IP addresses
smithson83 replied to Cragzman's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Have you checked the arp cache (arp -a)on the Print server, see is the Problem IP address have the correct MAC (for the printer) listed. not sure why this would change/be wrong though. -
Print server hating on random IP addresses
smithson83 replied to Cragzman's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Are the IP address you are assigning to the Printers excluded from DHCP? All would work fine until another client picks up a (seemingly, according to DHCP) free IP address, then the printer stops working and the client isn't a printer, but typing the address into a web browser may still work as you would of gone to that IP from your PC previously (or Ie may just be more tolerant of multiple IP/clients etc). -
If you want it on a web page you could use something like this Could just replace the current value each morning

A physical thing, or something on a webpage / digital signage etc?

@Duranis You'll have to report back on how they do when you get them. I'm budgeting for replacing our visualisers next FY.

I'd be tempted to go a plug in a different coloured cable, strung straight across the front. Sit back and watch the guy who spent all that time twitch and have a mental break down, just before saying, only joking, was just testing the switch config...

You want something called a "Tone and Probe". It comes in two parts, you plug the tone generator into the socket, and using the probe, which will make a noise when you get it close to the cable that has the tone plugged in, you should be able to follow the cabling back to the other end. Failing that, if you have a bog standard cable tester, plug one end in to the socket, and just go round all the cabs with the other end and keep plugging away, pun intended, till you find it.

that's shouldn't be funny.... but....

Office 365 - Moving Mailboxes From One Tenant To Another
smithson83 replied to FN-GM's topic in Cloud Services
After a quick poke around, this (IMAP migration)does seem like an option, but its limited to email only (won't transfer contacts, calendar ot tasks etc.), 500,000 items (oldest to newest) and each email is limited to 35MB. Not sure if any of that is a problem. link I'm sure there are 3rd parties that will happily take your money to do it for you... -
Office 365 - Moving Mailboxes From One Tenant To Another
smithson83 replied to FN-GM's topic in Cloud Services
This isn't going to be much help, or thrill you, but we ended up moving from one tenant to another. The only way I found of doing was to log in to Outlook (Full Desktop version) using each account in turn, backup the mailbox, login with new tenant, and restore it. I managed to get half our staff to do it them selves with crib sheets, but ended up migrating the other half with them sat next to me providing passwords, took about 5mins per user. -
I have two Dell R720's acting as hosts for HyperV. I'm starting to begin to run out of space (<25%), ok, so I'm not in any danger at the moment, but I'm looking at options. The drives currently are 10x 300GB 15k SAS in each server, which are still v.expensive. I was thinking of maybe (for roughly the same price per disk) adding a few 900GB 10k SAS drives and creating a separate VD on the controller (Dell's H710mini) and using this purely as a replication store, thus freeing up space on the primary VD. I was wondering if anyone out there who has experience with this server/controller... 1) Is this actually possible? 2) Would is slow down the 15k drives sharing the same controller? Any advise would be welcome...

Intermittent connection on Ruckus access point
smithson83 replied to mikkydoos's topic in Wireless Networks
Is there a pattern to the dropouts, eg, is it at certain times, or only under increased load etc? I'd swap it with another one elsewhere if you can, see if the issue moves with it. -
@sted, using an MDM with android is a minefield, it all depends on the APIs the tablet manufacturer has included. Samsung was quite good with this, but many don't bother.

@Edu-IT, in all honesty and fairness it was 1+ years ago...

When asked about this type of thing my reply is always "Do not do anything on school equipment that you would not do with the HT standing over your should watching you do..." -
I have tried using both, went back to Meraki, I found the Lightspeed UI very convoluted, whether its any better or worse, I'll leave for someone else. Meraki worked, its free (for my <100 iPads), so it was a no brainer.

if you don't want to spend money you could use two Laptops with a Powerpoint Show running, run a mouse out (or one for each contestant) so they click and it makes a noise and changes the screen. Or a webpage that will only respond to the first laptop that clicks, and a backend to reset/keep score, and a few mice for buzzers. bit Heath Robinson, but could work

Issuing Class Sets of Credentials in Primary Schools
smithson83 replied to dry's topic in How do you do....it?
We have generic Accounts for Reception, Year1 and Year2, then they start to use their own accounts from year 3 onwards. We came to the conclusion that computer use in KS1 should be about learning to physically use the computer, and pupils should be supervised whilst doing so. When they get to Y3, in theory, they should be capable enough that using the computer should be secondary and the focus should move to UN&PW, folder structures, and using the computers to compliment other lessons. -
Look on the bright side @witch, it's the 12th tomorrow

I can't make it either, but one of those Dogs keeping watch over our Ruckus WLAN would be cool
