I'm under no illusion that some will find a way around it. That's life, it's the same as having a web filter and the kids then finding proxy sites. But as least we're doing something, and they know they're being watched!!

Impero is more for desktop than Exchange, but it will help in that if the kids do misuse e-mail for bullying, etc, it'll be picked in keywords that they type (hopefully!). I'm aware that Zimbra, and others, have built in anti-Spam, and anti-virus, but being an MS clone I'm not confident using other products.... BTW Exchange 2007 does have free Anti-spam, don't think it has free anti-virus though.

All good suggestions! One thing I thought of is that if things do go wrong at the start of a lesson, pupils soon lose interest and the teachers have a tough job getting them back on task! A good efficient network would help prevent this.

That's exactly what I plan on doing this half term. I will probably allow a term of running with both school and hotmail, etc, accounts, but then I'll look to restrict to school e-mail system only.

After I found out we have 2 free calls to MS with the schools agreement I logged a call with them. After quite a lengthy process to establish the problem and every possible piece of information from the logs, registry, etc, being uploaded to them, they came back with remove the broadcom management suite as the logs showed some issues with it and they had seen it before on other setups! So far so good, the big test will be when the kids are back after half term. Keeping my fingers crossed!

If that's okay you could check the default gateway settings are still there. I spent a while scratching my head the other day with one of our servers with a similar issue only to find the default gateway setting had disappeared

Digging up an old thread here. Has anyone used comodo? I've just ordered a cert from them and then found out that they require photo ID, (I didn't see this mentioned when I read through their site) they will only accept senior management photo ID and not surprisingly our head is not happy to do this, can't see any others being either! As a NM I'm too lowly a being for them to accept my ID......

Same here. But then we had no choice, we didn't realise until late in the day that the phone system had been taken out of the PFI contract so we were left with a choice of buying our own VOIP system at huge cost or go with county for VOIP, we chose the county route. It was cheaper, but still almost 1/4 of the IT budget we had set aside for the new school gone in one go............ Still at least it's now free calls to most of the county offices and schools. Now all I need to do is get county to put the CTU ring tone on...........

I had an issue earlier this term with reserving IP addresses in a range where the leases were already out, a load of the teachers laptops wouldn't see the domain, resolved by moving the lease range to not encompass the reserved range (now why didn't I do that in the first place...)

Just ordered it today. We have been using Ilient free version, but for £75 MLH looks hard to beat! Plus it keeps ICT-NUT in food and drink for another week Interesting comments on categories, had never thought to keep it to a few so as not to confuse the teachers (bless 'em), it hasn't been an issue in the past as we only had staff e-mailing in, so all came in as support-general in Ilient, but with MLH I intend using integrated Authentication so staff can have a bit more control over their tickets, and hopefully use the knowledgebase!

We've only given our Business and IT faculty access to students user areas. No other faculty seems to want/need it. I'd be interested if others here have a script to setup the access levels and subject folders. Scripting isn't my strong point....

This was on the Sherston software tech pages, not being an RM school, I don't know if this is a one off or likely to be a common issue? There was also a poster on here a few days ago saying they worked for RM and that they stronlgy advised waiting before making the move to CC4

IIS 7 takes a bit of getting used to after IIS6 doesn't it! I keep having to remind myself that everything is modular in 2008 server, if it ain't needed it isn't installed until you tell it to! The amount of time I've wasted hunting for things that haven't been installed.........
