  1. I was just going to post the same article! I always advise the teachers here to use IT when it helps them deliver the lesson, they shouldn't feel they HAVE to use IT! If they can teach better without it(IT) then surely that's not wrong? (unless we're talking of an IT lesson!!) Working in a comp I know of the pitfalls of using laptops (as I'm sure you guys do to!), my first question to this Plaid MP would be, who's going to support them? And will the funding (if any) for the support be long term rather than headline grabbing, and then the support disappears after a year or two. Which leads me onto the next question, when will they be looking to replace the laptops, 3 years, 4 years, etc?? There's been a lot of talk here of getting a laptop trolley on each floor in our new school (Sept 2008), I'm relieved that the head has now come back from visits to other schools with the view that laptops are not the answer!!
  2. You don't have to use Sophos AV with Sophos NAC, I had them in for a demo a few weeks ago. The Sophos setup looks very good (admittedly it's all I've seen though!), just a bit more than we can afford right now!
  3. You spent ages fiddling with the tone, volume, etc, and waiting for a game to load from tape on a ZX81 (or Acorn Electron) and then it failing Or buying Input magazine, spending ages typing in the programmes every week, and then having to wait for the following weeks errata to fix the typos!! Then there was the Amiga, and Outrun or supercars II - the latter a favourite to start the Friday night drinking off to! I could go on!!!!!
  4. Aircon? I thought us techies were bred to survive living in server rooms/offices/workshops with temperatures of 30+!!??
  5. I've had a few issues with Version 4 which were down to permissions on the steinberg folder, if I remember rightly I had to give users modify permission. Version 4 also didn't put the shortcut in the all users start menu, just the user logged in for install Chris
  6. Thanks, hopefully there's somewhere a bit nearer I can visit, if not I'll be in touch! Boss has just been in telling me we need to get things planned in the next few weeks, I'd ideally like to test things out first before making a final decision!! Chris
  7. Hi, I'm Chris, Network Manager at a 1200 pupil comp in S Wales, been here for 5 years and am currently trying to plan for our move to a new PFI school in Sept next year - major headaches and sleepless nights ahead! Prior to education I worked as a techie for a manufacturing software company in Bristol. Chris
  8. Is there anyone here in the S Wales, or S West who uses TS and would be happy for me to visit and see it in action? Background............ We move to a new PFI school in Sept 08 and are looking at long term ways of maximising IT use for least cost. Whilst the setup costs might be higher I'm hoping the MBTF of thin client will make it better value in the long term. (I'm not planning Thin client for all rooms just where suitable) moan...... We have money set aside for the first year to cover network kit, VOIP (yep new school provided with NO phone system built in), software and hardware. It's the year on year costs after that are going to cripple as we have little money left after the yearly PFI contract maintenance costs are paid (by us not LEA)! /moan over! Thanks Chris
