If it's anything like here, staff leave PCs logged in when not in the room or staff let pupils use their accounts to go on a PC. Though this is getting better due to disciplinary procedures being introduced.

There's not any 'genuine' work on there after the alledged lost date is there? Could help your case if there is. As for software I've not heard of any, sorry.

How do you monitor or control use of your LRC when no librarian is present? Our librarian has been moved to another job and pupils now use the library unsupervised (unless it's a timetabled lesson), after several trashed mice and equipment constantly being moved around I have decided enough is enough and I have locked it!

Well, several people in our SMT *do* have access to all staff areas... Jeepers, they'd all walk out if that happened here!

At the moment only myself (NM), the IT Tech and head of IT have access to pupil areas. Until recently I would not have trusted the staff, they were often allowing pupils to use PCs under their usernames! Fortunately with support from manglement and a few additions to our staff handbook (i.e. disciplinary procedures) it's now getting under control and I may in the future allow staff access to pupil areas. I was tempted to post this on the TES site, but it may have started a flame war!

Our technology faculty are hell bent on buying one of those OKIs for every room........... Our IT working party is looking at removing colour printing from all classrooms (except art/photogrpahy) and centralising it to the repro room - going to be some interesting discussions in the near future I think! I have a 16' x 16' brick shed in the garden with electric, in range of my WIFI and complete with nesting birds :?

Exactly! I'm putting policies in place with the Head of IT for our new school, we're going down the route of billing faculties directly for replacing any damaged kit. It'll soon get them taking responsibility for their IT equipment. I do like the thought of those keyboards openhgs listed! Wonder how much they are.........

I've used old servers for running Surfcontrol in the past, (as long as they have a decent amount of RAM) and at our lower school site where they just need to run DHCP and authentication, basically stuff that isn't critical, doesn't need backing up and can be quickly/easily reinstalled if the server dies.

We use offline folders here for the same reason you do. It has been a right pain, the major headache we have is losing mapped drives, resetting the offline cache seems to fix it (It could be a red herring, but it's getting too much of a coincidence!!!)

I used to use software restriction policies. It is a major headache to setup, you need to allow all exes for each app. It does work well though. The only reason I don't use it now is because I recreated the pupil policy from scratch and never got around to putting the very lengthy list of apps back on

I had an intermittent fault here on an Evesham server (SATA not SCSI) turned out to be faulty SATA leads! Had me banging my had for a while, we had disks swapped out, and even a SATA RAID card! If you've checked everything else and still banging your head prob worth checking, as leads are the last thing we often think of being faulty!

You are having a laugh, right?? If that is the case I think this should be in FFS, and I'll be making sure we never have these tests here!
