Yes........ We were a VHS house, but my grandad swore by his Betamax, I think he only stopped using it when it was impossible to get more tapes for it. IIRC betamax was actually better than VHS...........

We use Sophos puremessage, it catches a lot, it quarantines a lot, and some still gets through............ We use the content filtering as well and it catches several messages a day where the kids send eaach other stupid messages. If you do filter the pupils be warned that apparently 'come' is now spelt as 'cum' by todays youngsters which puremessage doesn't like I get a fair few of those filtered every day!

I'm downloading OO now to see if that has more luck recovering the work as you suggested. A pupil has just come back after redoing a lot of the work last night only to have it corrupt again. This time she only had pictures in the document, no tables. I've just used my last free support call with MS to sort hopefully sort out or group policy problems

I guess this is to replace the movie they were going to make but never did! I'll be watching, "it's cold outside and there's no kind of atmosphere...." Funniest thing I recall was the interview they did when someone asked what smeghead meant!

@pashers. Thanks for the info on Openoffice, I'll give that a try next time. I managed to get the text back fr one pupil today using the 'recover text option' It is a big concern for me though that these issues exist.........

We don't have the compatibility pack installed on the PCs which are still running office XP. The plan is to get them over to 2007 ASAP. There's also still the issue of when the kids go home and use earlier versions. Surely having it set to save as 97-2003 should avoid all of these issues not create them

I've set it through group policy using the supplied templates on the office 2007 CD. It just that all the pupils I've had come to me with corrupt word files have all had tables in their dcouments, and we never had this problem before going to Office 2007........

We've started deploying Office 2007, and to ensure compatibility with external users, pupils at home and those who are on Office XP I've set everything to save as earlier versions. From what I can tell forcing this in word is causing file corruptions, it appears that all the pupils who've had this problem have tables in their documents. Has anyone else come across this? or even better have a fix! I'm off to check my WSUS server for Office updates in the vain hope there's a fix available

Interesting topic! I'm just starting the ball rolling with discussions on SIMS access from home. I'm not even entertaining VPN, too much hassle with issues on users home PCs, LEA, etc! As we already have three 2008 terminal servers in school I'll be looking at using one of them with SIMS client installed on, or possible using remote apps.

Hospital car park charges are being scrapped in Wales, plus we get free prescriptions I've only been to Carmarthen once so can't really comment on it. I do know that it's M4 and dual carriageway to Carmarthen, once you pass it though I don't think it's too good. Trains are pretty good as well to and from Carmarthen and the west as they link into the ferries for Ireland.

Thanks, I'd read something on the net today about user part of policies needing to be applied to user accounts and not computer accounts. Which is how my policies had been until we got 3 terminal servers and things had to change... Every days a school day!

Not at the moment. I did look at doing that as part of my troubleshooting, but I got sidetracked before trying it. I'm back on it first thing tomorrow so will give it a try!

I've put our 3 Terminal servers into their own OU, and added Rics script (amended for our setup) to a TS GPO to run at login for users. I've had no luck getting it to work so far I've checked group policy modelling and all seems okay, as is running the script manually. My question is(!!) - Has anyone else got the script running this way, or is it used for the whole network? I'm reluctant to do this as printing elsewhere is working and I'm nervous of causing more issues! Thanks

Yes, and don't overlook the opportunity of unpaid work experience (if you're unemployed at present), it shows your keen and is good for the CV!

There are loads of routes to go down, from looking from somehwere that teachers A+ (for hardware or server), getting the school to pay for courses (such as MCSA), etc But this is education, and unless you're really lucky it's going to be self study! In which case find a few old PCs, and build yourself a test network (at home if need be!) and play to your hearts content! Even better get the school to buy a MCSA/E study kit and work your way through them, as well as learning things that'll help in your current job, you'll also be helping make yourself more employable should you wish to move on in the future. And don't forget edugeek for help, at one time PCs, servers and networks were a mystery to us all, in fact they still are................

It's free, can be used as a client and a streaming server, and when we're done can be used to play DVDs and video. Has to be worth a look - thanks!

On February 13th we're having our official opening, and our beloved First Minister and cohort are doing the honours. As we don't have the space in our hall to accomodate all the officials and pupils, I've been asked to not only record the opening on camera but also to stream it across the network for playback on PC and projectors. Has anyone done anything similar? I've used Windows media services for playback of video and audio in the past but not for live playback, I'm not sure if this can be done with 2008 server? Thanks
