Server Virtualisation..The options? Your opinions & feedback...
webman replied to MYK-IT's topic in How do you do....it?
One virtual server we have runs various licensing apps, including Sibelius, and works without a flaw. That's Windows 2003 on XenServer attached to a Sun 7110 SAN. -
I've Sky+d Terra Nova, am looking forward to watching it. I love Fringe and am very pleased it's back! Not a bad start to the season!

What about disabling the sync in the DCs to the Linux box, and allow VMWare to handle the time?
-
No, and I didn't imply you said that at all We (as a collective, as a country) are doing that in raising the school leaving age. I don't have all the answers, and don't pretend to. But I believe there should be opportunities at 16 to suit a range of skills, abilities and aspirations - but simply "doing nothing" should not be an option and should not be encouraged or allowed - we can't support it!
-
But we can seemingly do the same to colleges/6th forms, and that's OK...?

Just like magazine shelves in the newsagents.

Yeah, I wouldn't even bother trying to run a Ruby app from scratch on Windows or Linux - dependency hell. However, there's a self-contained installable version for various platforms which I've had success with in the past - BitNami :: Redmine

RequestTracker? I've been looking at the PivotalTracker hosted solution too which you might like to consider.

I had to Pause for a moment there to think of some way to Insert another bit of humour into the thread.

Smoothwall syncs with uk.pool.ntp.org. Servers sync with Smoothwall. Workstations sync with servers. School bell system is too old to support NTP, so it's adjusted by hand

Advice needed! School website - Wordpress or Joomla???
webman replied to Heloise's topic in General Chat
That's right, I love CMS Made Simple. The new school site is under development and will be online in the next few weeks, but here's one I made earlier as well. One module I like is ListIt Extended. You can install as many copies as you want of this module, and it gives you an interface to add/edit lists of anything, with customisable fields; as well as being able to customise the output template of those for the front-end. I'm using it now for vacancies, downloads, staff list, featured items and the virtual tour on the school website. My feelings about WordPress (Blog masquerading as a CMS) and Joomla (truly awful interface) are well known by most on the forum -

Is there a specific reason for choosing Hyper-V?
-
We're CC4 + Windows 7, and we have a small handful of P4 machines (2.66GHz - 3GHz) with RAM ranging from 512MB up to 1.5GB. They're pretty slow, and will be upgraded as soon as funds are available. In our experience, Windows 7 performance really does suffer with P4, with or without HyperThreading. Best advice we can give is to use Core 2 Duos or i3/i5/i7 range processors, with at least 3GB RAM. If you can't get away from P4s, try some SSDs in those machines to see if you get any gains. To further reduce the upgrade cost, we're now buying component kits of mobo+cpu+ram and doing the job ourselves. Old beige-coloured cases are treated with black spray paint and new internals fitted - good as new. Of course, if you have small-form-factor or proprietary Dell machines, this won't be as easy and as cheap for you.

No, we're just still reading it -

@CESIL He should try Bandcamp. Buy a commercial DVD or BlueRay? With all the non-skippable ads and copyright warnings? And having to use a physical disc and all of the faffing around that entails? Or alternatively launch a computer file and get straight into the action. I know which one is more convenient and which one I prefer. -

How much Space/Quota do you give your staff?
webman replied to Butuz's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Originally, 8 years ago they were given 100MB. Staff who have been here as long (or longer) have had theirs gradually increase in line with the files they need to store. When we upgraded to CC4 with a SAN in February of this year, all staff are given a default 500MB quota (apart from those who already used more than that). -
If you need to add settings to RM CC4 Group Policies, add the setting as a registry fragment using the Management Console.

One of my tall friends buys from WalkTall as well and recommends them. -
I wear comfy leather shoes I got from Clarks in the sales. They have lasted for 2 and a half years so far

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
