Even the new document provider extensions (which allows 3rd party apps like foldr to become document providers) in ios 8 are not a panacea as they require iCloud Drive to be enabled so does not stop data leakage out of your network. Has anyone got any real world workflows for opening from and saving to foldr? I have already bought foldr (and it is a great solution but is still hampered by Apples model) for our new iPad trolley but it is not simple to carry on working on a pages file I had previously saved from pages to our windows network without creating multiple versions in iCloud for example. Also workflows for iOS Word and Excel are IMO too confusing. Also without a O365 subscription Word and Excel will open any files from your network in read only mode and here you are battling not to save it on onedrive I am considering using foldr is shared mode mainly for opening resources from network and then using AirCatch to save back to network. Still not good for large ongoing project files but arguably iPads in the class are not a good fit for this. I can see scenarios where a lesson plan goes across 2 sessions so kids will have to pick up from where they left off in a file. Perhaps the answer is to make sure the iPad goes out to the same kid in session 2 and just save locally rather than using the network like a windows machine to save everything at the end of every lesson

24 Brand new 64bit windows 7 machines 8Gb RAM Core i5. ActivInspire 2.3.65940 newly installed Java 8 Update 31 newly installed no other versions. Our old machine (32bit win7) with an older version of ActivInspire 1.4.20411 do not have this issue. Tried upgrading to ActivInspire 2.4.66096 but it has not fixed it. I have noticed that another window appears underneath called equation editor. Is this significant? Is it a 64bit issue? Is it trying to connect to classflow or something and failing to get through our proxy server? Every other app starts instantly on these machines. No major cpu and ram resources are being used by activinspire either

I don't think this is such a big deal but if the backend really does lock in the the end devices supported than that is not good. The devices will be replaced in a few years when truely secure agnostic backend systems will have matured. For now I think it is the right decision. Parlimentary IT is not going to be risk taking and the safe option today is iPads. Probably with Windows laptops. A good high end ultrabook will cost the same as a Macbook. All the iPads will be used for is email with perhaps a custom developed parliament app. With some of the the more "digitally" literate MP's using it for social media (eek). The real waste of money is when the old doddery MP's leave the devices in a dusty cupboard unused.

Thanks for the tip. Havn't tried this out yet. I do know that PPT 2010 can save to WMV out of the box. I also know that the WMV files generated will play on a LG television from a USB stick.

Would recommend the Logitech K400 wireless keyboard and touchpad combo. 10m range and 1yr battery life. Has tiny usb receiver dongle that does not pertrude more than 5mm out of the usb port.

How old are they? What resolution are they? We run our large screens at lower than native res as it makes the text too small to see even with the text size setting on 150%. At the the back of the room you are not going to appreciate retina resolutions anyway.

Not having read the above my 2cents would be to ... provision onedrive with an empty drive for students so they can start saving to onedrive make the old homefolder available on another drive letter but make it read only (possibly migrating to cheaper storage to archive it cheaply)

Uploading a 2.3Gb file is not a realistic daily use case. More realistically you would want to test with 30 kids trying to save a 5Mb file concurrently. Hopefully the throttling is per user and not a total for the school or lack of bandwidth between your ISP and microsoft's datacentre. If it is throttling per user then this will also protect your 100/100 lease line bandwidth. Rather than a problem I think this is sensible traffic shaping on Microsoft's part.

AFAIK the manage version feature in Office integrates with SharePoint to allow you to browse previous versions of a document. Are new versions taken automatically every few minutes or is just every time the user remembers to press save? Would be amazing if this integrated with VSS/previous versions (which I love BTW). If it is not possible to make a shadow copy of just one file using VSS then the manage versions button should allow you another method of browsing previous versions instead of using the right click over folder and choose previous versions tab. AFAIK OneDrive versions are taken automatically every few minutes. Perhaps even triggered by making changes to a document. I guess this kind of functionality is only possible when using a database like storage system. Perhaps it would have been possible with WinFS. But why can't Microsoft at least let you see the VSS snapshots from inside Word or Excel. Does anyone know if this is possible and just not enabled by default if VSS is enabled on drive the file is saved to. Any improvements on this front in Office 2013 (over 2010)?

Yes the problem still remains (for now) but you can mitigate the issues with off the shelf solutions from these vendors Xirrus, Aruba , Cisco, Aerohive and Ruckus.

All our 25ish Promethean boards are 6 or 7 years old (purple frame type) we have had quite a lot of intermittent spiking on boards. Mostly serial connection. Have people generally found that replacing serial connection with USB improves things? How do CAT5 USB extenders affect spiking? Are the latest Promethean Boards still prone to this issue or have they finally fixed this issue? How are they fixing it with firmware/software updates? (communication protocol tweaks?)

Don't know if people have seen this already but Microsoft now allow deployment of Windows Server Essentials (formerly Small Business Server) by adding the "server Essentials Experience" role to a existing instance of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Datacenter. Server essentials offers among other things "Remote Web Access" which can access files on the server and Windows clients on the LAN via RDP. Also you are no longer forced to use the build in Exchange server.
