I reckon we do about 6k a year. 750 approx 40 printers this does not Inc photo copying. 1st year we had colour printouts in art/graphics they blew 3k in 6months!

I think this was the original reason behind itunes music store. So apple could deflect these accusations from the music industry and give customers a 'legal' option even if they chose not to use it. of course making a little money while their at it didn't hurt either.

Big thanks to Joe for sorting some desktops/laptops during the easter break! I gave him a vague idea what i wanted as i was too busy and kept me up to date via email/phone calls with progress/queries regarding my quote/order. All arrived when he said they would arrive and even took the pain on talking to Dell support and organising a swift pickup when 1 developed early morning stability problems! Only 4 suppliers have ever been given my personal mobile number and never after my initial enquiry after joe reassured me they dont cold call/hassle us IT Professionals (top of my list when dealing with suppliers!!) so top marks from me!

I've been looking at FITS for over a year now and really wanted the department to implement it. Now im the manager of the department and with the task of getting the department ready to successfully manage 1.6million worth of investment in IT next year and just starting the process im glad that its all getting updated just before we embark on the jouney!

Trackpad buttons on the eeepc require too much force to press imo and can be fairly difficult to use for long periods of time. The NC10 keyboard is also better than the eeepc 1000, the shift key annoys the hell out of me as its right shift key is half sized sharing the space it normally would with the up arrow!!!! so you end up pressing up instead of shift!

since moving office away from the server room and the fact i very rarely visit it anymore might be time for 1 of these babies now summer is on its way. hopefully the aircon should be good this summer had it all serviced just after all the snow!

we have a mix of sources for names. windows servers tend to be LOTR (sauron for our cctv, merry + pippin for eportal and cmis database servers) mac servers have mcx+what every it does linux servers i setup are wow bosses. some old linux servers that an old techie name are some geeky swear words from some geeky tv show. (loomas, mivonks)

i believe only i was asked this question due to my relations to the previous manager who had been dismissed and my loyalty was brought into question. it was something i was going to bring up during the interview so wasn't that bad!

I have an interview on monday for Team Manager of IT Support(edited as it was changed!). Due to some unexpected events, i've been doing the job for the past 8 months there will be also be a couple of external people interviewing for the post. any questions i should expect to crop up? Anyone got any tips? I feel im ready to step up to the job and based on feedback from staff i have definately improved the rep of IT Support among staff at the school in what has been an impossible situation!

Came across a strange problem on a student mac laptop. She was complaining that it was slow in the net and randomly going to wrong sites. She told me it had started after her older brother had been on the laptop. 1st thought was he had added DNS nameservers to the network settings but it seems more than that as the 2 Ip's are undeletable!! Went to resolve.conf And the same DNS servers were there. Bit of googling brings up some possible malware for windows. Anyone come across this before? Ran various scan but nothing. Will post more in the morning! Changing the file and it seems to reset back after a rrstart.

bit different for us as a one school pathfinder, although nothing has fully been 100% decided, anything that is in good condition and isn't ready for the skip is going to be past on to our feeder primaries.

dont forget to hold off on buying them untill the atom 280's arrives! Asus are claiming 9.5hrs of battery life. even though (i think) intel haven't announced anything yet. same situatuion as you 150+ and the samsung NC10 is my personal choice (unless toshiba can get some of their patents out the door this year) dont know if we'll be going down the Vista route so wont be a problem. thanks for the warning though!

Im pretty sure you can mirror 2 mysql servers and keep them constantly upto date by having each server setup as a mirror of the other?

Schools hit VLE's hardest during lesson time. Using todays teaching methods you generally get 30-60 kids all doing the same thing at the same time as you are experiencing. I would say just host moodle on the side that hits it the most. students wont cause too much of a problem if they have to wait for a pages to download at home. but an entire class would kick up a big stink if they have to wait during lesson time (they get bored and chat to their mates).
