we redirect alot of folders such as the library/cache folder to a tmp folder in the local drive using a simple login script using ihook. i am sure on edugeek some where and here it is http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mac/20644-create-default-os-x-home-dir-via-ad.html#post202938 sorry mine is for 10.4. forgot 10.5 has this function built in.

have you tried moving 1 of the machines to the lab that works fine? are the logins 3-4mins no matter how many people are logging in? spec of machine? lots of managed prefs configured? any login items? what have you tried?

Problem with 3rd parties? If they decide to do some vital maintenance to your service, it might not be at the time suitable for you. And the cloud is going to be like the paperless office! If its going to work it wont be for the next 20 years! (especially in schools, people are printing more than ever before!)

found out that a certain someone was working in a primary school last week during half term. clock was wrong in a ICT suite so he changed it. then realised they were all 1 hour slow!!!! (this was on monday) so changed them all! turns out before going on the holidays the caretakers had changed all the clocks ready for the 1st day of term tomorrow!!! (you know who you are!!!)

24down/3up bonded ADSL. Provided by Vioni. 400+ computers on our network (not counting iphones, ipod touchs etc) Only since allowing access to video has our bandwidth got any where near to being saturated (lunch times) as our filtering box on site cannot filter webpages fast enough to get bandwidth up to that level just from normal surfing alone. we are looking at moving from a 8meg bonded solution using BT's network over to O2 on be's network and bonding 20down/2up lines instead(80d/8u). sadly were out in the sticks so cant have any of this funky fibre stuff.

perhaps you should get them to sign a piece of paper saying they wont transfer your services over to a managed service for the next 25 years

it should work, although im pretty sure the powerbook was a 65w? it might take a little longer to charge the battery when using the laptop.

we force the desktop here by setting the desktop on our admin system then copying the correct plist into workgroup manager, cant remember exactly how to do it without being in front of the screen, getting very rusty on that side of things with more window boxes creeping into our network although the biggest increase in speed you'll get is by creating a little script to redirect the users ~/library/cache to the local drive.

for a start dont put the full path to your exchange server. Server on my phone is exchange.*******.co.uk (no http or /OWA or /exchange etc) Username is Domain\username and set it to not sync contacts. hopefully this might get changed in the future, but it will wipe your phones contacts and expect you to use exchange for that.

while scanning spiceworks is slowish although version 3 is lots better.
