i always try and stay 1 version behind the latest, mainly due to the fact its always being updated and hopefully allow plenty of time for modules to be updated tested. As the module is actively being used by the college/school(?) that developed the module im assuming it will get updated at some point. 1.8 or 1.9 its up to you get a a test site running both and see if you find which "works" for you Running Ubuntu 8.04 with 1.8.5 on my development site for next year and will be doing so untill i know 100% for sure all my required plugins work in 1.9

and if you do the moodle/cmis/Activedirectory intergration you can easily manage yur classes in moodle with parent access to the VLE and their students work on the VLE, aswell as using this to gain access to Official Reports, attendance etc via eportal using just 1 syncronised password. BIG TASK btw dont just jump in thinking this is easy, alot of prep work to get it working. (about 50% through config so far)

yup any mac will do. our OD Master is on a dual 1ghz G4 with 1GB of ram which manages 200+ mac clients

we are doing a similar course (big budget to get them going) we went for a bunch of mid range iMac's although if it was my choice i would have added a few laptops in the mix too

we now use spiceworks help desk. Staff find it easier to use as few systems as possible and they seem to be happier sending an email to our heldesk email address than using a web page. If its something more than a password change then it gets logged. When im out and about i just send a short email from my iphone, and add the appropriate details in it later.

we run our Moodle installation as our VLE + Intranet. Currently testing our beta site for the new school year. we have links to eportal, OWA, searchstar(library system), department pages etc. weather and bbc news rss feed on the left hand side. General Notices/news in the middle. Caledar/upcoming events/blog cloud on the right hand side. We have Dance and sport leaders, student council etc etc who we plan on providing elevated privileges with access to Blogs and maybe other areas they can edit. Tags from the past 30 days or so will be put into the blog cloud.

i do feel for you sims schools. /start smugness upgraded cmis thursday, beat my record of 34mins! managed to do a backup, windows updates x3 servers(app, database,eportal), install cmis, let it do its database checks/upgrade, install eportal, install eportal patch, defrag 3 servers. reboot servers all in 27mins. all went well and i probably wont have to look at the servers again till next patch tuesday! i think cutting out the coffee making helped speed things up, although i am sure i could slip that back in a better time in the process. /end smugness of course it wasn't always like this!

someone correct me if im wrong. The transparent part is done using iptables at the gateway to redirect port 80 traffic to the proxy ip:port. so if your not doing it at the gateway it wont work.

i was thinking about this while sitting on the beach yesterday(sad i know!) and came to the same conclusion as you. Teach me for installing moodle from apt-get i guess. will see in the morning if i get a chance to look into it. Edit: just had a quick look at it. seems to have sorted that problem. just not getting any files listed. getting closer! edit: woot working!

something to do with the moodle implementation of it, The orignal smbwebclient seems to work fine if i run it from the www folder. nothing in the webserver logs that i can see

connects fine from the command line. Im kinda guessing my problem is with my cfgwinShareToSmb array. all im getting is a blank page! (with the default config i was getting lots of errors!) Our home folders are set as \\server\share\username and the domain is 'lan' so following the config file notes i should have $smb_cfg->cfgWinShareToSmb=array( '\\mcxh1r'=>'lan/mcxh1r' ); any ideas?

Spent 5 mins trying to get it setup at the end of today without much success on my new moodle box running ubuntu 8.04/AD authentication anyone got any tips on how best to configure this block?

yes sorry this if for every client that needs access to home directories. you can use the command line to setup the AD connection so this should all be scriptable saving you some time if you have Remote Desktop. Cant find my old script though grrr although there are some good examples at bombich.com Bombich.com: Mac OS X Management Custom Shell Script Library

ok what you need to do is change the advanced settings in AD Plugin in Directory Access. untick the force local home dir on startup disk and change from afp to smb. Ok, just had a think about this. will need some more info, because if your talking about netinfo you must be running 10.3 server still? If your going to attempt any integration with AD i really really would advise running at least 10.4.5+ or 10.5.3. Netinfo was in the process of being phased out in 10.4, now its gone in 10.5. If you still have student user accounts in OD and AD then migrate to a full AD/OD integration. If you need any help there are plenty of people here who have it running.
