john dont forget as soon as all those kids are in the building that wifi will be battling to get through lots of flesh too so expect a shorter range!!

keyboards are pretty good, no good for classroom imo. fine for most kids but once you get 1 bad student they can do alot of unfixable damage. fixed on like laptop keys.

Had a similar thing happen here, lucky there were 2 of us working in the area. was probably 1 of the oldest small cabs we had from a previous company we got to do our installs. Thing had tiny screws to hold it up! our current installer does the monkey bar test. If it doesn't hold his 15 stone in weight while hanging off it then its not good enough

Coming from a Mac network installing small amounts of windows in the past(even more so now we have a new head *sigh*) AD is the best platform for managing users. Integration of Macs to a AD server is far easier than trying to get windows to integrate with Samba/OD IMO. Only thing you loose is the ability to manage prefs on a User basis, but due to how the mac's Managed groups work you could easily create a new Managed group for a bunch of bad students for example with restricted rights.

really easy. remove battery and there is metal plate on the inside 2 edges shaped like a "L" covering the RAM on the long edge and the HDD on the short edge. unscrew the 3 screws, remove plate, and slide out harddrive via the plastic tag. to instal new hardrive take the mounts off the old harddrive and slide it the HDD back in. (be careful and make sure you stick a tag or something similar that you can easily use to pull the drive back out). reinsert and screw the L shaped cover back in, replace battery. Turn Macbook on. Insert Tiger Discs, Hold C to start up from DVD. Once the installer has finished and your at the tiger desktop insert Leopard upgrade disc. Reboot and hold C to boot from the Leopard Disc and follow the installation process. and wait

we moved to a new power provider, and now have access to our power history logs for every 30 minitue period every day. Graphs wouldn't work when i tried it today but was able to make my own in excel from the downloadable csv file. interesting thing i found out is that our school consumes approx 800KWh on a day when not 1 single person is in the school and peaks at 1600KWh on a normal school day...... or £68 and £145ish a day Im not 100% sure if this includes the swimming pool/sports facilities which could bump things up anyone else have access to similar data? whats it like for your school?

We are planning on rolling it out in the new school year. We are planning on using our progress days to hand out details ensuring the correct login details get to the correct people and with 1 on 1 or small group demo sessions we can ensure that parents/carers can make the best use of the information that is presented to them.

Suppliers might not be able to bring the price down on kit but they may be able to come to some deal on applecare.

we use a program called ihook to run login scripts at login with a fancey UI with a progress bar. just set scriptname.ihook to run at login and hey presto. torledo, if you have exchange server it is push email via active sync also what is interesting is the notification service i suppose any email service like google mail could take advantage of it to fake push email(so you get notifications of new emails). 1 thing i would still like is a privacy setting. having txt messages pop up when your showing your gran your new iphone could be a little embarrassing and I still cant believe how amazing the games are.

all our mac servers are file servers so never really knew except the server that does OD so thanks

ahuxham i would lock them down using os x server, any mac from the last 5 years is powerful enough to do the lock down(if you want it to be more reliable go for something new!). Although i do not know if its possible to use the 10 user version to do the lock down in a AD setup.....the education unlimited user license price is not too painful compared to 3rd party tools, you also get the benefit of another thing to add to your CV and a lot of cool server features to play with.

How are you setting up the default user templates, kinda like windows OS X has a default profile for each language setting that a new user will receive. I cant remember how this behaives. you might find if you dont set preferences to 'always' in the managed prefs then i will merge from 3 places(can someone correct me if im wrong!!!). a) The local profile in system/Library/User Templates/English.proj or Non_localized(this might only be the case for the 1st time a user logins) b) pref files from their own ~/Libary/Prefrences c) then the above is merged/overwritten by managed prefs. Once (ie when they 1st login) Often(every time the managed prefs get updated by a admin overwriting any changes made by the user) or Always (no matter what the setting it should overwrite it.) we tend to setup a user how we want it and then copy it to every single users library/preferences and then also apply managed prefs. if were using OD and not AD for user authentication, you can copy files to the /system/library/user template folder on the servers and it will auto create home folders when creating new users (ignore this point obviously!) Also your lockout problem, in this forum someone had a fix by disabling automounts, which doesn't effect AD Users.

Actually (imo) the only option for education is to stay on 10.5.2 unless you have a bigger bug to squash that is fixed in 10.5.3. its a big problem for apple, this is their core business(designers) that they have hurt so expect a fix fairly soon. I wouldn't say its like working on a movie file across the network(InDesign maybe due to it constantly saving temp files). photoshop works locally in RAM and only interacts with the network when you hit the Save button.

The problem is students will try and save to the file server directly. The point is it worked before the update and updating clients to 10.5.3 will nuke students work, hence the warning. from what i heard Version Cue is not very easy to setup for 800+ students and the mayhem that would follow should you allow them to save locally.......

i think its on the client anyway as it happens over smb and afp
