  1. the other way is to have groups setup within each course. only problem is everyone has the same assignmnt deadlines.
  2. perhaps somebody needs to create a nice ajax messaging monitor mod

    RAID 10 Server

that raid controller supports Raid 10.
  4. some of the comments point out that the sites with porn on them allowed self registration? thats like giving a paedo a key to the school, the front door and the toilets is it not?
  5. ok here goes.... 1) TELNET returns admin@Mivonks:~$ telnet 10.19.x.x 1433 Trying 10.19.x.x... Connected to 10.19.x.x. Escape character is '^]'. 2) tsql returns admin@server:~$ tsql -S SERVERNAME -U user -P password locale is "en_GB.UTF-8" locale charset is "UTF-8" 1> 3) iSQL returns admin@server:~$ isql servername user password +---------------------------------------+ | Connected! | | | | sql-statement | | help [tablename] | | quit | | | +---------------------------------------+ SQL> 4) go to the block on moodle. click transfer students. does some stuff and comes back witht he following. Transfer Completed Successfully Transfer Log No transfer errors occurred Lookup Log Lookup Failures For year 7 08studentname (last network login: 2008-12-18) Query returned nothing:- SELECT NS.studentid ,NS.forename, NS.calledname, NS.surname, NS.leftschool, NS.dateleft, SU.classgroupid, SU.courseyear, SU.courseid FROM nstupersonal NS INNER JOIN students SU on NS.studentid=SU.studentid WHERE NS.setid='2008/2009' AND SU.setid='2008/2009' AND NS.studentId='3557' above is just a sample of 1 student but it does this for every student! so from the above error message i assume its getting the info from Active Directory. then requesting the data it needs from cmis but failing. entering this statement directly on the SQL server works fine returning all the correct data. Only thing i can think i have missed is i read something about the need to compile php with freetds. which i am pretty sure it is, but not sure if its configured properly? still stuck but have a bit better understanding of whats going on now atleast.
  6. sorry to bump this oldish thread. now im back to work properly after some perternity leave/Xmas hols i would love to have another go at getting this working. anyone any ideas/tips on getting this working? thought it was connecting but getting ps in my orginal post the odbc ini and freetds are the wrong way round but the right way round in my config files
  7. i would probably go for something toatally out side of the box. If the grant was big enough perhaps go down the route of a set of DS's with brain trainer and run some crazy project to see if getting a group of kids to uses them for 15 mins in the morning can help improve their concentration/progress etc. Aim for those middle of the road kids in the D/E bracket who could easily get a C at GCSE!
  8. @Ric In the past 7 years we have had it happen where on 2 occassions 2 kids in the same year have the same name and toatally unrelated to each other!!! even that happens sometimes we use yeargroup entered the school + full 1st name + surname. although this was orginally from the days when we ran OpenLDAP and didn't cause us any problems. we sometimes run into issues when students have really long for/surnames since moving to AD.
  9. I guess it all depends on how brave/understandable your SLT are. They have to sign off on anything. Like you have already realised there is no point banning as there are 100s of other ways students could do this sort of thing. What schools have to ensure is that they have good polocies in place, make sure students understand what is acceptable and when something bad does appear treat it with the correct amount of punishment.
  10. Sorry synack XSERVE Xraids have a caddy that has its own funky hotswappable interface at the back and no room what so ever in the caddy to add a converter. iSteve good luck on the drives, Thursday was a bloody nightmare trying to find 4x to replace my 2 dead drives for my xraid.
  11. we allow student owned mac laptops(we had a laptop scheme 4/5 years ago) on to the wifi with small amount of network access, odd printer avilable for them to print and internet access. ipod touches, iphones (yes students have these already! we have a fairly middle class cohort) wifi enabled phones such as Nokia N95s. Next years plans are netbooks for year 7 and more access for student owned windows laptops/netbooks in other years.
  12. Russ can you hear our conversation over here in rutland or something? we had this exact discussion in a meeting discussing the ICT vision for our new college with the ICT consultants. I dont know about you but i hate saying no to people. One place we see the MS surface like tables is in some of our more public spaces. our LRC for example will have collaboration 'pods' which these will fit in very nicely, only thing i can see wrong with them is they could do with being a little bigger?
  13. well normally £154 but taking offers!
  14. Due to one of our Raid5 Arrays going very wonkey im no longer going to Bett Tomorrow. so i have a paid for 1st Class Ticket from Melton Mowbray to London via Leicester up for grabs.
  15. pine = line
  16. perhaps members have to introduce themselves with a cheesey chat up pine to win a mug
  17. if you want to post your config settings that would be handy. PM if you dont want them public
  18. ooo up the road(15 miles or so), might just do that
  19. hey Hightower, have you hidden the news forum on the front page? (you can edit the name of the news forum aslong as it stays as ID 0 and the name of the news section will also change from site news to say moodle news or what ever you changed it to) we use 'Courses' to build up content on our VLE. for example we have a course called 'Photo Gallaries'. this course holds, you guessed it lots of photo galleries powered by the lightroom gallery mod Any public files you can store these in the site files and then link to these. 'Student Council' is another course and we have created a special 'student council role' which gives a couple of the very trusted members of the council ability to do what ever they want within the course. Any areas/resources you want private, for example we have a staff area with policies etc is non enrollable but just incase also has a key. we also have a staff training course that is setup as a meta course of the staff area so that all enrollments are shared. If your going down the route of the look and feel of the newbury theme, then its just a case of making sure your content is linked to in your theme (all the sub menus etc)
  20. nice example Moodle (Newbury College Student Intranet) (btw you can get their themes from moodle themes database)

    apple tv

you can sync your apple tv with 1 library and access up to 5 via streaming content.
  22. Going down on the Friday, got a meeting on a stand some where at 10.30 with my head, college manager and someone else (cant remember!) hopefully will be done for some pizza at lunch!
  23. always forget the obvious places!
  24. I dont suppose anyone is willing to share examples of really good courses they have running on their sites so that we can show teachers what to aim for when designing their own courses? (i know i am being a little lazy but with xmas and a baby due any time + lots of other stuff i dont have time to design them myself!!!)
  25. in the middle of syncing my moodle site, will have a look. any changes you make will have to be in the block code it self, so make sure you document any changes so you can reapply them after any updates.
