Hi All, The school have invested in Laptops, some Winbooks, Chromebooks and have been given a bundle of Kindle 7's. KS2 used to use the Windows laptops but they have now been passed down to KS1 and the Chromebooks will be utilised in KS2. The Winbooks are deployed for 1-1 learning and the Kindles will be used as e-readers when setup. We don't use ipad's. The batch of learnpads that we have are now so out of date they are due to be scrapped, the Teachers didn't like using the setup platform that comes the the learnpad system so they stood unused mainly. So I was thrown this question last night by email, "Just thinking about tablets for school. What other tablets have schools used successfully? You know I love iPads but I am curious to see what else is out there" Apart from Ipad, Android, Chromebooks and Winbooks that can all function as a tablet if they are a 2 in 1 design is the anything else used in schools? Thanks

In the past I have said to the the original supplier, Do you want it back or should I dispose please reply by such a date? if I get no answer, then its deemed scrap and goes with rest of the WEEE kit when its recycled along with anything else including CCTV units that always get left behind.

I have had to restart the services sometimes to get it to deploy.

I remember watching the original when I was a lot younger and have watched it again last year and its still as good as it was when it first came out, somehow when I watch a remake of a classic , they just don't cut the mustard but maybe that's just me.

You can use 2 sets of headset using a splitter 3.5mm Jack and the inbuilt microphone on a laptop. On a PC you could use a a splitter and 2 headsets using the splitter and the mic 3.5 jack plugged into the mic socket of the PC. I have tested the laptop theory, so no reason why the PC theory wouldn't work. Used one of these.

Do they take anything like ie Interactive whiteboards, redundant caballing such as audio leads, old headphones etc or is it just PC items?

One of my schools used their current supplier to switch to IP phones, cost quite bit, had nothing but problems with the call quality and dropouts of calls. Our ISP applied QoS on the smoothwall device in the school and it seemed to fix it just before Christmas but the issues seems to have come back, they have Netgear Smart Switches but I think company used a cheap Netgear POE switch to link the phones into our Smoothwall device for which they grabbed a number of reserved IP addresses from me. Anyone ideas on what I can check for the school when I am in next? Thanks

Am I right in thinking that Smoothwall will not allow Android devices to authenticate the setting up of a Google Account on an Android device even after connecting to the schools Wi-Fi, because at present to get the accounts set up on the devices they have to be taken offsite and I don't fancy sitting at home on my Wi-Fi setting up each device especially hundreds of them. Content filtering will have to be addressed, just getting the devices setup with a users google account without having to take them off site to authenticate with will be a time saver. "There is no transparent in google auth method for Android - in order to log in using your google account, you would need a Google directory connection and a login redirect to the SSL Login page on the Smoothwall so users can manually login using their Google credentials." Were using Chromebooks via our smoothwall is this the same as they work fine, were not syncing active directory accounts with google.

Hi, Does anyone know how to get Android devices to authenticate Google accounts when creating them on a Android device, whether that be a phone, Kindle or tablet and sitting behind a Smoothwall device onsite. Not sure why it won't on Android, works fine on a network that is off premises. Anyone know what needs to be changed on the Smoothwall device to allow. Thanks

In the past to get round software that needed to write to the root drive I used to dump it into the public profile in folder called software, worked most of the time but was a manual install rather than a deployment.

The school here has a archived copy Textease Studio Plus V5.98.6, I have just installed it on Windows 10 64bit Ver 20H2 no issues. Its still old bit like me so its not just yet:D

I think the name of it sums it up really "2000", a piece of software that has been around 20+years. Spent so much time with it about 2000-2015 I was glad to see it gone when I finally convinced them they need to move on from some of the old software they were having me troubleshoot, don't get wrong I like a challenge getting some this software working, but really is it best use of a technicians time.

I have managed to get Toolbox installed and removed most of the Amazon stuff. I am still stuck with one page that links to amazon online etc but, I have installed Google Play, Classroom, Chrome, I am not sure how they will work on the filtering side, having problems getting them to sign into Google while onsite at present but I thinks that's an authentication problem with Android devices in general as even my phone will not authenticate a new Google account on an Android device onsite so I have have asked our smoothwall support address it. I have other issues with smoothwall but that's for another thread.

They probably do, so they must work round it somehow or maybe they just take care of the kit. I have been here a long time and only ever had to replace one because it was faulty. Until they ask the budget manager or head to get me to source a replacement its a do without. Its a simple rule, look after your supplied kit. Shame others can't do the same.

Still running iPads that are stuck on ios 10.1 i think, won't go any further, they were bought in Feb 2013, they are just used as a glorified cameras. Won't buy them again if I have anything to say about it.

We don't replace remotes for classrooms if they lose they get the stick, a stick with a rubber on it, they should only need to turn it or off.

When I have had this issue I told them to just leave it as it was probably pulling some updates and after time it has loaded, but as you have rebuilt that may not be the issue, I would look at the size of their profile. Does a dummy account do the same?

Hi All, This has been going on for the past week since coming back from lockdown. For those Teacher that do manage to get into the Teacher App they have no classes to show and yet they have the group permissions of Class Teacher. Our Teachers App Console is so flaky that it is becoming impossible to take the registers using the Teacher App. I get the standard reply from Sims Hosted Support and that is to check the credentials see below: KB0036932 - Latest Version Subscribed Teacher App - "Your Teacher App School Services Have Not Been Activated" when logging in to the Admin Portal • 11mo ago • 21 Views • ( )( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) Description of Issue When logging in to the Teacher App Administrator Portal (http://www.setup.capita-sims.co.uk), and after entering a SIMS Username and Password, the error "Your Teacher App School Services Have Not Been Activated" shows on the screen. Cause This is due to an issue with the SIMS Credentials used to log in to the SIMS database. Resolution In the first instance, please ensure that the credentials being used are correct. These need to be valid SIMS credentials that allow login to the SIMS Database, with at least 'Class Teacher' permissions assigned. Hosted SIMS Users: you will not be able to use a [email protected] account for this step. You will need to create a local account for this purpose. You can create a new account for this purpose by following the below guide: In SIMS, go to Focus | System Manager | Manager Users Click 'New' Enter a forename and surname (Teacher and App as an example) Click 'Continue' Amend the Username to your liking (teacherapp as an example) Under Section 3 - Groups - Add the permission of Class Teacher Make a note of the password and click 'Save' After doing this you can use the newly created credentials to log in without issue.
