We base it on if the kids are in uniform, we'll be in shirt / tie. Otherwise whatever we want.

I once ate 4 cream eggs all at once for a dare. Nearly puked, but managed to keep them all in my mouth - took a good 20 mins to finish them all.

Been thinking about this myself today. With the swap to SQL 2005, thought it might be time to update. I was pondering RAID 0+1 for the database and sims files, with RAID 0 for the system. Currently use RAID 5 with hot spare.

For install intructions look here: http://www.google.com/tools/toolbar/buttons/apis/howto_guide.html#installing edugeek.htm

Sounds good, how much did it cost?

For Nova-t4 you just need a copy of bwcc.dll putting in your system folder.

Couldn't agree more, we have 3 apw's all connected together, marvelous kit. Had to take them all to pieces and dismantle the server room door to get them in though - 47u :-)

Earlier versions of SIMS required WS setup running. If you arn't giving the users local admin level access to the PC, then you'll need to run SIMSPERM.bat (with argument - user or group) Alternativly you could create a custom GPO to replicate the permissions. Look here for more info http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=53773

I don't think the education / private situation is so black and white. From my expreience outside of education: -There are lots of under paid, under valued staff in companies too. -Being IT iliterate and opinionated isn't exclusive to teachers. -White elephants are everywhere, the public sector does them bigger than anyone else though. -Money for IT is usually one of the first thing to be cut when companies try and make savings. -The last company I worked for the vandalism there was on a par with the worst I've seen by students. Then there's the work outside of normal hours - no holidays to rebuild servers in industry. On call at weekends. So why am I in education? I enjoy it, most of the time. I'm lucky I guess, I get nice big budgets, have a good bunch for my support team, a knowledgeable SMT too. Even BSF isn't coming to my LA :-) So I have a reasonably secure job. Just waiting for the council equal pay review - any reduction in pay would make me reconsider my position though.

When purchasing, we're ment to get the best value for the tax payers money. No problems with that - I don't want my taxes being wasted either. Usually this means, 3+ quotes, tenders etc. which is a pain. So I'm looking into reducing the admin I do for purchasing, while maintaining best value and not upsetting our bursar and the auditors. Things I'm looking at are becta frameworks, catalyst approved suppliers and regional consortiums (for us the Yorkshire Purchasing Org). What do you do that saves time / effort purchasing?

Isn't it patellaly obvious we have nothing better to do?

Can't knock(knee) them for it?

Intel are after hospitals money too. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6383035.stm I could see this technology being useful in schools too - RFID tags on kids for registration?

Exchange 2003, Forwarding External Mail on Same Domain
steve replied to OutToLunch's topic in Windows
If you could get an external IP, then DNS / SMTP would be the way to go. You could also then ditch the external POP accounts and use OWA. Sometimes we have to live with what we have though :-) -
Exchange 2003, Forwarding External Mail on Same Domain
steve replied to OutToLunch's topic in Windows
Just to clarify things in my mind (tell me if I've got it wrong) OK now this is a bit (a lot) of a bodge and would be a pain for more that 10 offsite accounts. But if the external POP3 accounts share the same domain name, I can't think of another way to get the mail off site. Check with you ISP, do the offsite accounts have and underlying alternative email address? If not you'll have to setup some more POP3 accounts, these must allow you to auto forward incoming mail. Set 1 up for each offsite user, and set it to forward to their offsite account. (Yahoo mail i think offer this) In active directory setup contacts for all the offiste users. Attach the related offsite email (either , or the auto forwarding). This will allow your internal users to get emails to the users with POP3. AD Contact -> (which would appear directly in ) Or AD Contact -> -> Far from ideal but should work. -
The August release will work on both SQL 2000 AND 2005 (and the free versions). This will be the only release supported on both. Releases after August will only work on SQL 2005 / Express. So in theory you could work with the august release on sql 2000 for sometime after - but everyone needs to upgrade eventually, due to school census changes. These updates will only work on sql 2005 / express. Migration tools are being created to move from MSDE to Express. Full SQL 2000 users need to assess whether to move to Express and save on licencing, or go to full SQL 2005. Advice and instructions will no doubt be available nearer to the august release.

Our door just has a sign saying ICT Technical Room. However the door opens out into the corridor. Such fun! No one ever remembers, takes kids ages to read the PULL sign on it. Even more fun when people leave despite a 4 foot PUSH sign down the door. Everyday someone pushes and walks into the door when it fails to open.

Our ICT support office - all 4 of us have keys, as do SMT, premises and cleaners. Nothing has ever gone missing so not worried and we tend to be first in and last out anyway. Server room - 3 keys, me, the network manager and a techy.
