  1. You are just trying to backup a SQL 2005 database and not use SQL 2005 Express as the databse backend for BackupExec? If not, as NetworkGeezer says, its MSDE or SQL 2000. Doubt they would support 2005 as a backend even with a support contract :-)
  2. Have you applied the Hotfix? http://support.veritas.com/docs/280204 Needs applying on the backup server and the server running SQL 2005 with SQL backup agent - but in your case with both running on same server should just have to run it once.
  3. We get a specific budget for 4 techies of £600 in total, which we can use how we like, including overtime for in house training. Plus access to a large pot of money specifically for SIMS training. Then use of any savings I make in the development budget. If all that fails I can beg and usually get a bit more funding for training :-)
  4. This could be a long reply ….. First, staffing levels – if techies are swamped with keeping things going, there’s no way they can even start to contemplate the bigger picture. I’ve always viewed the computers / laptops in a school as tools, expensive as they are, they are only a tool – there to get a job done. Whether it be typing an essay, taking a register, sharing an idea or finding information. Look at industry, a computer is a tool to get the job done, they aren’t there for the employees’ pleasure or to satisfy their curiosity as to how it works. For me it’s not about right and wrong choices, it’s about preparing students for the real world. Computers need to work and the staff need to know that they will work in a manner they expect them to. This I see as the primary role of tech support. If it doesn’t work as expected, forget everything else, it won’t get used. Additionally we have an obligation to ensure nothing illegal is happening – copied software, hacking, viruses spreading, etc. Leaving a system open to these possibilities is asking for trouble. Once a system is in place that ensures this is happening then it’s possible to look at ways the tools can be used to enhance the teaching and learning. How staff expect the system to work varies from person to person, school to school. It’s down to all parties to discuss this, SMT, Teachers, non-teachers, techies. Discussions on changes, upgrades, policy decisions need to be understood at all levels. All parties views need to be taken into consideration. A major issue is staff competence using the tools provided. A key way to enhance the teaching is to help staff develop the knowledge needed to use the tools provided. Once they have the knowledge, they know better than techies on how they can use the tools to enhance the teaching and learning. From this you would hope staff would share their ideas and experiences with each other and techies. From this, good practice can arise and new technologies can be trialled. Another way we have tried to enhance teaching is provide some multimedia specialist skills, such as video editing / recording, graphics, presentation and poster design. This gives direct benefits of staff having more options available for teaching and can have a direct effect on enhancing the teaching. But as with most things techies do, it’s the indirect – taking on tasks the staff don’t have the time or skills to undertake themselves and wouldn’t be an appropriate use of their time to learn the skills needed. By undertaking these tasks we free up the staffs time, letting them focus more on the students. You would expect the more time a teacher has to teach, prepare lessons, mentor, mark, etc. the more time they can focus on enhancing teaching and learning. So, I don’t think we can alone enhance the teaching and learning but by providing tools that are going to work, by passing on the knowledge of how they can be used and freeing up teacher time we can play a part in the process.
  5. Basic I know, but did you do a restart on the server with the remote agent installed? I recently had to remove the agent, restart, install agent, restart. Access available then. Other possibility is the account Veritas is using to access the server. Does it have permissions to access the default shares c$ etc.? Or: http://support.veritas.com/docs/258984 http://support.veritas.com/docs/255174

  8. About £2.5K inc install from what I've seen, probably get a bit of discount if you're lucky :-) Had a flyer from Dell with one in it today too - £2439 ex del and vat I am concerned about the little chimps swinging from the beam as well as the optional projector safe being at a hieght you could smack your head on.
  9. A few sites: http://www.sycd.co.uk/ http://www.scienceyear.com/ http://www.schoolscience.co.uk/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/11_16/science.shtml http://www.skoool.co.uk/
  10. I'm feeling a bit flush this month - well it is my birthday Sunday So I thought I'd see if I could get the BETT donations rolling in again. You know its in a good cause!
  11. Anyone got one of these installed? Link Looking to buy these next time - the amount of grief I get about the hieght of the boards!
  12. For Exchange 2000 OWA and 2000 Pro clients we had to logon as domain\username password Worth a go
  13. "Yes, it is quite an impressive errection, isn't it?" Russ's love of modern architecture gets him in trouble again.
  14. If you are managing the server from a workstation, you need the Exchange System Management Tools installing from the Exchange CD.
  15. Did this over the weekend, as we needed it to fix a lesson register problem. Worked ok for us
  16. From what I remember you have 2 options Use compression on the image, given the second drive is empty, this should keep the image small. Use switch -Z1 for fast compression Or Resize D: to be just a few meg, then use the -szeL switch to resize the last partition to fill the drive. More Ghost Switches
  17. On 7.5 you need to disable direct IDE access support by adding the -fni switch.
  18. He stole all my best moves! I'll have to perfect some new ones for a teachers wedding bash Saturday.
  19. You need to make sure the server is attached to at least a switch, I had many hours of fun not getting a 2000 server working until it detected a network connection. To get active directory you'll need to run dcpromo. This site goes through it it detail.
  20. This 'news' story has p*ssed me off no end. :x Another politician jumping on a bandwagon - we must protect our children - bound to get headlines. The evidence is from a survey of 92 kids in london spread over 20 schools. I've read the full report, its bull, any decent statistician would have thrown it out. Thats 92 surveys from nearly 3.5 million kids 11-16 . Only 6 kids reported being cyber bullied more than twice. Just 4 kids bullied in school by email or instant message. And the impact of this cyber bullying is very low (according to the kids). Most of the bullying is done outside school control - phone, text, picture message, home computer. No way can we control this stuff. 80/91 kids say banning phones and email etc in school would have no effect. Kids are evil, they will hurt each other wether its with a brick or an email. So the government will want us to waste thousands on stopping this, without having done any real research as to wether it is actually a real problem. Not only that, they'll just issue some half ar*ed guidelines that we should check kids emails.
  21. Is the time / date syncing ok?
  22. I was using a VPN and VNC, so it was almost as good as being at the box - until the reboot and I couldnt press the reset button. Hmm next thing to save up for is a VNC compliant KVM so I can see whats happening on screen at boot up, ooo and one of those remote power things you can control via a web interface to cycle the power
  23. Not sure if this has been posted about before ... I was looking at how I can deploy google toolbar for students while controlling some of the sites that need pop-ups (we use 2000 not XP) - we are looking at Testwise (more online tests 8O ) So from somewhere in the depths of my mind I recalled Google Toolbar Enterprise And as look would have it this allows you to control the pop-up white list and most of the other features using a GPO while being able to distribute via an msi. I did actually email google about having this feature back in Nov 2004 - they must have listened
  24. Saw this article on the BBC site. Looks like North Yorks is losing a massive amount of kit each year. Anyone able to give me a rough idea on cost of protecting 100 PC's with SmartWater? How do people using it go about stopping themselves getting covered in the stuff when moving / cleaning kit?
  25. I attempted our upgrade yesterday (Sunday) afternoon via remote access. All was going well until half way through the db upgrade the PC crashed. Couldn't get remote access back onto the PC I was using, so had to wait until this morning to find out the reason for it. Got in early to find the PC I had used decided to reboot and then not recognise the hard drive. Tried to open sims only to get an error message saying an updated had failed. Logged an online support call with capita at 8.50am after tralling trough the help files. I was called by sims support at 9.00am and within 30 mins I had the system up and running with the update complete. It not often capita get praise, but I reckon they deserve some after todays efforts. Quick call back and a support personnel who knew exactly what to do. And I actually quite like the new interface - I think its more end user friendly, and the lesson register icon will save our teachers faffing through the menus.
