  1. Yep, closing our place too. Told we can't use A/L (unless planned before the strike). Ah well got till end of June to use my A/L. 3 weeks to take, where's nice this time of year?

    Capita

I'm still betting on them getting a multi billion pound contract for unnecessary ID cards. See, now it makes sence why labour wanted ID cards so badly!
  3. We were inspected just a couple of weeks ago and ofsted hardly spoke to any non-teaching staff at all - despite there being more of us thatn teachers. Given one of our previous areas for improvement was ICT we were all supprised how little they looked into it. We put it down to the fact we'd got the Naacemark a couple of years ago. They seamed to focus on the SEF along with the general teaching and behaviour.
  4. If you tracert the printer from the client, whats the route?
  5. Yeah, suppose it will take a bit more, just going on the size of the backups we generate - typically 320Mb from a 1.2Gb database. dbattach generates .zip files though, not bak files afaik.
  6. You'll have to add the external address as a contact in AD first
  7. Just to be safe and speed things up, I'd get the users out of SIMS first.
  8. Just copied this from supportnet: Dbattach can be used at a dos prompt or included in a batch file. Path to the N:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SIMS\binn folder where N is the drive SQL is installed to. Dbattach.exe is in this folder. The command would then be dbattach as specified below: Parameters : /SERVER="ABCD" - ABCD is the name of the SQL Server to upgrade /DATABASE="ABCD" - ABCD is the name of the SIMS database on the server to upgrade. Note that if not supplied the settings from the Connect.INI in the current directory will be used. /USER="ABCD" - ABCD is the user name: SQL User for installations and utilities SIMS User name when used to backup. /PASSWORD="ABCD" - ABCD is the password for the user given /AUTO - If supplied the user interface will not wait for the user to press the Install button. /NOBACKUP - If supplied no backup will be taken of the database, and if a problem occurs, no restore will be performed /BACKUP - Create a SIMS backup - also requires user, password, database, server and auto
  9. dbattach.exe /user:"username" /password:"password" /backup /SERVER:"YOURSIMSSERVER" /DATABASE:"sims" /AUTO That will reduce the size of the ldf (username and password of a sysman) But you will need space for a backup - about 300Mb
  10. Right click on the shortcut for word or other app, select properties. Under the Shortcut tab is a shortcut key option. Click in the box, then press the keyboard combination (must be a combo and not one key after the other). OK to save

    HP 3800n Q5982A

Anyone got one of these colour lasers? Looking to replace our old Epson C2000's with them. Seen them for £600 with full set of toners. Shame I have to ditch the epsons really as I was trained to service them - and have all the epson service manuals. But they are on their last legs and I could never get them working with *any* print management software. HP 3800n Q5982A
  14. 99% Cisco including wireless AP's, just a couple of small 5 port Netgears where Cisco would be overkill.
  15. Think I had this once had this too. Using your fave reg editing tool (I prefer Resplendent Registrar) you can remove the corrisponding registry keys in the ntuser.dat from ntuser.dat\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Network\Persistent Connections Or maybe script the removal - not tried that one myself.
  16. Are you trying to link segments of your network together or provide wireless network access in buildings?
  17. Have you copied a default profile on to the laptop that comes with the network settings in it?
  18. The Intel pro set does have some redeaming features. http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/pro2915abg/userguide90/profiles.htm We use the pre-logon to get laptops to run the scripts at login. You can use profiles for you wireless network - which can be set to be automatically imported. Its a funny old world, we have cisco ap's which work best with the intel pro set on centrino but the cisco pc-cards we have only work with the zero config :?

    Netgear WPN824

Never been a fan of netgear personally. I'd recommend a Vigor2800G, a bit more expensive though I'd guess http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2800.html http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/image/t_vigor_2800g.jpg Installed mine over xmas, and its never been turned off since.
  20. I bought a little package that deals with this in a different way. TerminatorX http://www.plevna.f9.co.uk/ It kills processess with specific windows titles, such fun watching the applications close infront of the kids eyes.
  21. Do you already have SIMS? Try and get a trial of lesson monitor from capita, but use lesson register in SIMS .net instead. All you need is a sql licence file that enables it. It would save setting anything up, creating class lists etc.
  22. The NGFL (Grant 31a) funding ends this year. ICT funding has to be taken from the new Schools Development Grant and the Devolved Formula Capital. So it will be down to the school exactly how much they put into ICT from now on. elc's will continue at about £1000 per school plus about £10 per pupil (not sixth form) This money must be spent on curriculum online approved software. http://www.curriculumonline.gov.uk/Default.htm be warned, their website is worse than bectas http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/consumption/groups/public/documents/committee_report/chilserv210905item9pdf.pdf
  23. Feel free to do what you like with it
  24. I've been working with our LEA on a modified version of the TCO spreadsheet. It now has planning for 5 years, allowing more advanced planning. Its been a good exercise for us to see how much money the SMT need to budget for to maintain the school at our present level. Combining it with a time line of software / hardware upgrades has given us a great picture of whats happening when and how much its going to cost. As a NAACE marked school we need to plan for 3 years at a time and these tools really help everyone see whats happening long term. tco_guidance_notes.pdf 5yr_tco_blank.zip
  25. Acorn Electrons at school. I've had an Atari 800XL and 520STFM. Managed to borrow a PC from school for a summer while I was in the sixth form and never looked back. I was sorting through some old manuals the other day and was shocked at the price I'd paid for some computer bits. £250 for a HP 560 Inkjet from Escom in 1995. Ten years later an inkjet for less than £50.
