At a recent Learning Platforms seminar I attended I saw a presentation by Robin Ball from Becta (Manager - Learning Services) Its also likely some LAs will with hold some funding and try and work with other LAs in their RBCs Current status is that no supplier can meet the functional spec at the min. My guess is there will be some fudge along the lines of supplier xx is approved on the understanding they have commited to work towards meeting the specification. As with all these things, how will the schools be monitored? Probably only by an OFSTED report - so if you've got something that works and ticks the right boxes on Self Evaluation I cant see any issues myself.

If you are running exchnage its a know bug http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914678

So....... proxy - a) for staff unfiltered proxy - b) for Windows updates proxy - c) filtered for students If you are running group policies, create a gpo for staff - and set this to use proxy a. Create a gpo for students - and set this to use proxy c. If your pc's are set to run windows updates directly, you may need to reconfig this by setting up a wsus server - as you have suggested, setting this to use proxy b. The other 2 proxies may block updates - why else setup a third just for updates?

The script I've shown doesn't use any of R2's quota system. I've predefined the quota limits per year group, and the script goes off and calculates the space used. I looked at a few alternatives, but this at the time was the best i could come up with. One problem is that the drivespace reported by windows still referes to the entire space available - not the remaining quota. There is a command line tool within R2: from server :\>dirquota quota freespace /path:\\share\userfolder This gives the users % usage. Only trouble is I've only been able to run this on the server, and its extremely slow.

I setup our login script to measure the disk usage of each student at login. Then display the details in a popup box. We use kixtart scripts ..... Dim $quota Dim $year Dim $restrict Dim $defprint Dim $diskspace ;defines print quota and year group based on active directory group IF InGroup("2006_07") $quota = "50" $year = "Year 7" goto yrend EndIf IF InGroup("2005_06") $quota = "100" $year = "Year 8" goto yrend EndIf IF InGroup("2004_05") $quota = "150" $year = "Year 9" goto yrend EndIf IF InGroup("2003_04") $quota = "250" $year = "Year 10" goto yrend EndIf IF InGroup("2002_03") $quota = "500" $year = "Year 11" goto yrend EndIf IF InGroup("2001_02","WSELC_2001_02") $quota = "200" $year = "Post 16" goto yrend EndIf IF InGroup("2000_01","1999_00","1998_99","WSELC_2000_01","WSELC_1999_00") $quota = "300" $year = "Post 16" goto yrend EndIf IF InGroup("ICTStaff") $quota = "unlimited" $year = "ICT Staff" goto yrend EndIf IF InGroup("staff") $quota = "100" $year = "Staff" goto yrend EndIf :yrend ;runs a prog that calculates the space used in the users home folder (z:) and outputs to txt file Shell "%COMSPEC% /C \\server\folder\dirsize.exe z:\* >%TEMP%\dirsize.txt" ;reads the correct line from the prog output txt file If Exist ("%TEMP%\quota.txt") ;check if file exists Del "%TEMP%\quota.txt" ; del if file exits EndIf $ = Open (2,"%TEMP%\quota.txt",5) $ = Open (1, "%TEMP%\dirsize.txt") $Line = ReadLine (1) Do If InStr ($Line,"Total file size (MB):") $NewLine = Trim (SubStr($Line,22,8)) $ = WriteLine (2, $NewLine + @CRLF) EndIf $Line = ReadLine (1) Until @ERROR = -1 $ = Close (1) Del "%TEMP%\dirsize.txt" $ = Close (2) Open (3, "%TEMP%\quota.txt", 2) $diskspace = Readline (3) ;gets restrictions as stored in users full name in AD IF @FullName = "" $restrict = "no resrictions on your account" Else $restrict = @Fullname EndIf ;displays message box MESSAGEBOX ("@userid - $year @CRLF@CRLFLogged on to computer: @wksta@CRLF@CRLFDefault Printer: $defprint @CRLF@CRLFDisk space used: $diskspace of $quota MB disk quota available@CRLF@CRLFRestrictions: $restrict@CRLF@CRLFDate: @Day @MDayNo @Month @Year @TIME", "Logon Information", 4160, 10) dirsize.exe is a freeware tool from Tools4ever (they call it T4eDirSize)

As a schools agreement subscriber I thought I was missing out on something free then but according to the MS website: Something to keep in mind for the next subscription. How much do people pay for their server licences under the schools agreement?

We bought 107 of them in the summer, our first purchase from NEC. Not had a problem with any of them so far, plus they have a good design and run pretty quietly. Only niggles are the tool-less case - easy fixed with nut/bolt or tie wrap. Non standard PSU - not sure on how easy it is going to be to get replacements outside of warranty, only time will tell. EDIT: The PSU is a FSP Group - FSP220-50LD They do have standard ATX connectors, but the size may be non standard to fit the small style cases.

How about trying one of these

I was doing a bit of browsing when I came across this site Its an online system for booking appointments for parents evenings. Trouble is its American and expensive. Anyone know of a UK equivelent? Or anyone used something similar for teachers to manage their appointments?

A nice technet article that covers the basics here Its pretty easy to get into, setup your quota templates first, apply them to the path using the auto apply to existing.
-
If you can go with 2003 R2, the quota system on this is much more flexible - you can set quotas per directory, which you can automate this across existing user folders. It doesn't depend on file ownership.

I've been butchering these scripts this morning to try and get a popup telling the user they will be logged off - no choice if already logged on. part of logon.vbs trying to change: If StrUserName = strUser Then 'The user logged on to the other computer is the same as the user trying to logon to this computer 'Open messagebox informing user that they are already logged on strResponse = msgbox("You are already logged in at computer " & strMachine & "! You will now be logged off this computer.",4144,"Duplicate Login") if strResponse = 1 then 'The answer is OK 'Write to the log file Set filetxt = objFSO.OpenTextFile(strpathname & "logs\" & formatdatetime(Now(),vblongdate) & ".log", 8, True) filetxt.writeline(Now() & ", " & StrUserName & ", " & StrMachineName & ", User logged in elsewhere, decided not to login here") filetxt.close WshShell.Run "logoff" What I'd like to do is have a time out on the message, so even if its not clicked it, it will still log off after say 60 seconds. From what I've read on the t'internet, the msgbox needs changing to a objshell.popup which would allow a timeout to be specified. I tried using the following: Set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") ' added with other set parts at top of script. strResponse = objshell.popup("You are already logged in at computer " & strMachine & "! You will now be logged off this computer.",60,"Duplicate Login",4144) Only trouble is my vbs is pretty limited. Can anyone help?

You forgot the poll option of: When hell freezes over We're looking at 2008 for a complete revamp of our system.

We have the same issue with proxy changing - at the minute we get them to use Firefox at home. I came across these a while ago but never got round to trying either: http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Proxy_Changer/proxychanger.html http://www.snapfiles.com/get/proxypal.html

I bought a fake tan / art air compressor off a car boot for £12 Works a treat! And we are all now bronzed adonises dispite the rain

@tarquel 2003 r2 only has disk usage quotas - not print quotas, so you'll want to keep PMP for those at least. The management of the printers is a bit better, only major plus is the deployment via GPO's.

We also run Backup Exec with SQL agent and the DBATTACH script. dbattach.exe /user:"username" /password:"password" /backup /SERVER:"SERVERNAME" /DATABASE:"sims" /AUTO The dbattach file is located in something like C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Binn - depends if you run MSDE or full SQL. We run it as a nightly scheduled task, just keep an eye on the build up of the backup files - they soon eat into your diskspace.

We have the block set at 8, with these being deleted. Junk Email SCL set at 6. Connection Filtering, we have 2 block lists setup: Spamhaus - sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org Spamcop - bl.spamcop.net With these and sophos puremessage, we now have very little spam. Well except for the internal stuff - I don't suppose anyone here wants one of our science technicians cats either

You can download CD's from capita. Not sure if you can do a full install from them though. On the capita support site search the news for resource 11351 31/08/06 SIMS 2006 September Update - CD Image is available From the URL you can work out each release easy enough :-)

Had to look twice, but its true, the edugeek conference is advertised on the capitaes support website.

In his speech at the Labour party conference, education secretary Alan Johnson put forward an interesting plan: Now how does this stack up with the DfES policy on e-portfolios and access to work outside of school hours. How the hell can they expect this to be policed? Hello I'm right hand, hello I'm left hand, oo whats that you're doing right hand? 8O Is it just me or does AJ have one of those faces you'd just like to punch?

Can you access \\servername\c$ etc from the backup server directly from the run command? Remove the agent from each server from the local control panel. Reboot servers. In BackupExec, got to Tools - Serial Numbers and Installation Select the Local and Remote Install, and remove the agent serial. Re add the serial and remotely install on the number of servers you have licences for.

Just found this article about the up coming update to RIS. More info about it here Should be released before end of year with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
