Our vice principal is due to find out what our involvement will be in one of these schemes, not holding out much hope of the LA sorting it all out. At BETT steve from novus on the edugeek stand mentioned they had done a similar project for education using thin clients. For me thats got to be the way forward for schemes like these.

Small scale stuff, 7-10 primary schools.
-
I'm very interested in this, as we are potentially looking at supporting a number of our primary schools this way. Obviously it won't be on the same scale but I'd be interested to learn from your experiences.

Installed it on a couple of laptops for the more advanced users to try. Main advantage is its available as an msi Other little features: Multi monitor support, proxy setup for online resources, dashboad, powerpoint converter.

Use http://www.edubase.gov.uk/EstablishmentFind.aspx You can then export the whole LA as a csv.

As a SIMS partnership school, we tend to get a bit more of the big picture and as a result I'm a bit of a sims convert. A few of my thoughts: Capita are working on using the free office readers, so no expensive office upgrade should be needed. I've seen a fair few schools where the admin computers are neglected in terms of upgrades - both hardware and software. The SMT in these schools need to understand that all PC's need updating, not just the ones seen on parents evenings. I've seen people think an old 486 is good enough for admin, then blame capita for all their woes and switch to serco. Only when serco doesn't work, they go buy new PC's. Personaly I like the interface and think it has improved no end. There was an extensive consultation process on the latest changes. I won't deny some bits of SIMS are painfully slow and can grind the entire system to a stand still. When the grand plan of everything being .net is complete, this will make support and the underlying interconnectios much better. Migrating all the old applications to .net is and will continue to take long time. But if it was all done over night it would be a nightmare. Despite all our feelings on the upgrades, capita do test and test extensively. Yes in a couple of recent updates things haven't gone according to plan, but once a problem was discovered they did their best to minimise the effect on schools.

We've started using ProxyPal to turn on / off the proxy settings in IE at the click of a button. We had been getting staff to use Firefox at home, unfortunately ActivStudio doesn't like it.

This depends really on your learning style. They are very intensive programs with long days. Personally I prefer them to self study, as i'm not self disciplined enough to pick up a book each night. Being away from home with nothing else to do seems to focus my mind. You tend to get a lot of people with little or no computer knowledge on this type of course, they want the bit of paper that might be their way into the industry. Commonly known as paper MCSE's.

I too would recommend joomla even for the most basic site. You have to factor in learning joomla, design, content, smt consultation, sorting hosting, testing. For 1 person, i'd say about 100 hours depending on the amount of content.

Use the quota management in 2003 R2. Its based on the size of the folder, not the file ownership.

I'd suggest some of the following: Responsability for more than one technician High level problem solving - network equipment + servers Dealing with manglement, including some input to SMT on future development of systems A 2nd / 3rd line of support for ICT Technicians to escalate issues to Work on own initiative to identify and solve problems before they affect the system

Try grabbing a copy of Treesize Free and seeing just where the space is being eaten up.

Are you using Puremessage? There is a known issue, available on the sophos support site I created a simple batch file (below) which is scheduled to delete the excess files each night. cd C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\data\warehouse del *.* /q

BETT 2007 - Where do we go from here?
steve replied to Dos_Box's topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements
Well I went to Dublin for the weekend and left Ric and Tony to clean up :-) You didn't manage to keep the demo unit on loan from Dell on the edugeek stand? It was a nice 4 dual core, 16Gb system (but without a FDD!) It was good to meet the you all at the show ..... now back to work tomorrow -
Recruitment, brainwashing. And thats why my personal view is that there should be no religion in any school. Makes you wonder if LA's are under pressure to put forward good schools, so they won't all fail like a lot of the city acadamies have been.

VLE for students, an intranet page for the admin computers. The admin intranet page just has a google search box and VLE link.

Restored backup from tape but cannot restore files (veritas)
steve replied to sidewinder's topic in Windows
Sorry for the delay in replying, but I'm still on holiday :-) You might need to re catalog the media. Under media, select the newly inventoried item, right click, catalog. -
Awww I thought you might be the David Batty, Leeds Utd legend. Shooooooot!

OK, so I went off and found the current offerings from the 10 approved suppliers: Azzurri Communications Ltd - TALMOS Etech Group - studywiz Fronter - Fronter VLE Netmedia Education - MyGrid4Learning Pearson Education Ltd - KnowledgeBox or PowerSchool?? Ramesys - Assimilate Research Machines plc - Kaleidos Serco Ltd - Facility VLE UniServity - UniServity Viglen Limited - Viglen ClassLink Learning Environment or it's learning Not 100% sure the offerings from Pearson or Viglen, both have more than 1 product. Anyone able to clear this up? I'm due to help our LA look into these , so hopefully over the next 6-12 months I'll try and review the ones I look at.

Restored backup from tape but cannot restore files (veritas)
steve replied to sidewinder's topic in Windows
I'm not aware of anyway of doing this in backupexec. The problem you are coming up against is by running a second backup to tape you are creating another .bkf file (similar to a zip file within a zip file) How about: Setup 6 backup folders and 6 media sets Folder A - Media A Folder B - Media B etc. Then each week backup the media set to another drive. Once on another drive, remove the .bkf from the folder. Then you can just copy back the file to the folder if you need to recover anything. [EDIT] There may be a way ..... Within the media section, try moving the media from the folder to the tape. (Right click the media item, move) Never tried this myself though. Looks like you can just move the media from one place to another. This should then allow you to restore from tape. -
We use the tape method - its cheaper in the long run for us. And we also have diagrams of all the rooms, these double as seating plans. ict08.pdf

Restored backup from tape but cannot restore files (veritas)
steve replied to sidewinder's topic in Windows
The .bkf files are the veritas compressed data files. You need to imports these into veritas. Create a new backup to disk folder. Place the backup file within this folder. Create an inventory of the folder. If this has worked a Changer.cfg and Folder.cfg file will be in the same folder. Check the job monitor too. This should now make the files available within the restore section. -
We had browser service problems and dns issues. Found out via the error event id's generated.
