  1. I'm writing this as much for myself as for you Geoff - I've never actually documented it, so forgive me if it’s teaching you to suck eggs :-) We use version 8 of Whats Up Gold This is how I setup a temperature function to be monitored via SNMP: First configure climate monitoring device - IP / SNMP read + write communities / SNMP Trap server IP On monitoring server (SNMP Trap Server) in Whats up gold: Setup a new device - the climate monitoring kit. Get system to poll IP of device via ICMP. Specify and set to monitor the read + write communities (matching those on monitoring kit) Within Whats up gold I then setup a service to monitor a SNMP Object ID (which is specific to a particular function on the device) These are found by integrating the product specific MIB (included with monitoring kit) and exploring the SNMP view. In this example the built in temperature object ID is 1.3.6.1.4.1.17373.2.2.1.5.1 Then the service can be set to monitor the output of this object id. I set it to monitor a range of values - between 10 and 20 (oC) However this could be a constant - ON/OFF on door sensor etc. Or a rate of change in the value Whats up gold can then be configured for each device to trigger an alert if anything it is monitoring fails / goes outside of its specified range. I have the system SMS me if any kit fails, the temp goes out of range also have ups systems to alert if power goes down. MIBS for most SNMP capable equipment can be found on suppliers support sites, at http://www.mibdepot.com or via the SNMP monitoring software suppliers support sites
  2. Out of interest where did you get the document from and when was it written? With Learning Gateway Capitaes are going more down the web route than ever, so I suspect this may not represent their current position on web technologies. Everyone can change their mind after all, the guy at IBM said "I think there is a world market for about five computers."
  3. We have 2 of the climate-monitoring systems in. Easy to setup / configure. Comes with a SMNP MIB so you can use it with any SNMP monitoring software.
  4. Can you create a cname for the terastation in dns? Then point backup exec to the terastation via the cname?
  5. I think these sigs are the internet equivalent of the rear end of a car: Internet - car rear No sig - de-badged Basic sig - standard model info Humorous sig - comedy bumper sticker Quirky quote - custom number plate Flashy graphics - boy racer big exhaust and spoiler And tbh I view them with the same attitude - must be compensating for something!
  6. A few more i've thought of but not done ... yet Remove all the insides from a PC and fill it with saw dust and a soft toy hamster .. or put in a hamster wheel and a note with "i've gone on holiday too" signed hamster p.s. back on xxth (day after techy is back) Change contents of a pc to oldest stuff you have and just install win 3.1 Put a few of their favourite sites in the hosts file and redirect them to 127.0.0.1 Switch the mouse buttons round in control panel
  7. Blu-tac on optical mice Pulling off all the keys on a keyboard and putting them back upside down Growing cress in a keyboard while some ones on holiday Fixing a gas lift chair handle so the seat goes down when sat on and back up when they get off
  8. This is our backup script: dbattach.exe /user:"backup" /password:"password" /backup /SERVER:"server_name" /DATABASE:"sims" /AUTO No specific rights for the backup user.
  9. I use fast sms for server alerts, they have bulk sms options too. http://www.fastsms.co.uk/
  10. I agree. Maybe its time promethean did some more market research and developed products more friendly to the consumer. I for one would buy lots of nice new robust pens / power supplies from promethean if they provided a good TCO.
  11. I thought the same myself ric_ after suffering a psu failure, I contacted promethean. The 10 year warranty only covers the actual board, not the pens, psu or cables. Considering the price of the boards, I felt a little short changed.
  12. Me too, they would be great with the grippy coating the voting pods have on them. Would make the pens a bit more robust if dropped on a hard floor too. I think the coating is Neoprene??
  13. Worst imposed on me: reportmaster - purchased without any thought, consultation. Dropped after 1 set of reports.
  14. There are 3 budgets for ICT at our school Development + Sustainability - maintains a minimum level of IT equipment and some new developments e.g additional projectors, plus software licencing (VLE, MS schools agreement) ICT Supplies - Toners / Inks (purchased centrally then billed out to each department based on usage) ICT - The ICT departments budget for teaching resources. Any new software (other than elcs) or IT equipment is then purchased buy the individual departments. e.g. voting systems, logging software, etc. I manage the first 2 the head of ICT manages the 3rd.
  15. For this example =SUM(B2:K2)/COUNTIF(B2:K2,">0") Final cell AE49 would be =SUM(B2:AE2)/COUNTIF(B2:AE2,">0") Should be resonably easy to replicate using reference cells and find + replace.
  16. The epson colour lasers have a fuse built into the toner, so the installation of a new toner can be detected. After counting the expected pages they declare they have run out. This can be overwritten via the menu. But this causes problems if you need to move a toner from a failed unit to a working one.

  18. I saw a good idea over on the sims support forum today that I'm going to look into for our sims rebuild. Setup a laptop with sims on it for the hoildays. Just have to look at how to ensure its backed up.
  19. Currently SIMS uses either MSDE or SQL 2000, from August it will be either SQL Express or SQL 2005. We currently run SQL 2000 as out database is over the 2Gb limit allowed by MSDE. We will be using SQL 2005 in August. This site gives a comparision of the versions of SQL. I have no doubt our database will be over 4Gb in under 2 years time, so I might as well take the plunge now and get the system right from the start.
  20. The product does what it claims, you can take registers on a PDA. To take a register you have to logon to sims on the pda, select take register, choose register, then take the register, save. Unfortunatly you can't do registers offline at the moment. I was assured that this feature is coming soon though. For our situation I can't, at the minute, see any great advantages over our wireless laptops. We have a strange timetable setup so PE staff have to go into other members of staff registers all the time. This would be worse on the pda as the fiddly onscreen keyboards would slow the registration process down. Hopefully this will be fixed in September by out timetabler. On the install side I was told we can't do it ourselves, we would have to pay for the installation :? I'm waiting for the technical documents to get a more clear picture of how it works before I make my mind up.
  21. Yep, I can smugly say i spotted this a mile off http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4386
  22. Playing basketball for my high school team (we never won a match though). A hat trick of medals at high school on sports day. Javalin - Gold, Shot put - Silver, Discus - Bronze.
  23. We too have been looking at this for PE - the offline being ideal for taking registers in changing rooms / out on the field. I can understand our PE departments frustrations with laptops for registers, they aren't the most practical items. Tablets and ultra portables are another option but having tried a Samsung Q1 and a tablet I still have to be convinced these would work better than a laptop. I'm having a demo of the PDA solution tomorrow. Also considering a kiosk style system in each changing room.
  24. Our LEA negotiated a special deal for laptop excess charges. We only pay £50 excess on laptops now. Only valid though for accidental damage or theft. Where theft must have had forced entry - not from an unlocked classroom.
  25. I've always had prescriptions from my GP, but now I know I can get them cheaper and without the hastle! Thanks for the tip Smile _________________ Steve Taylor ICT Technical Team Leader Secondary School (These are my views and not those of my employer)
