Have a look in your network sims folder for the following files: PERS5CON.pdf - Brief Overview CHECKUP.pdf - How to use checkup utility Checkup1.pdf - How to resolve issues CHECKUP.exe - Data check utility Also search SIMS SupportNet, under files and documents, for "check" There maybe newer versions of the manuals and data check utility than those is your SIMS folder.

The personnel module has been available since november. We've been running it since then without any issues. Its much better that the old 16 bit app. I've done a test of the Feb release and it didn't cause us any issues.

I know a few of us use the papercut software for print quotas, I just thought I'd share with you all one of the best experiences with customer support I've had lately. We purchased the papercut software back in July and have been using without any problem ever since. Recently a major upgrade has been released, so I chose last night to do the upgrade. We had purchased a years support so we were entilteled to the latest software. After taking backups, I ran the uprade without any issues. On running the software, I was informed my licence was invalid and I had 40 days to try the software and obtain the licence. OK no problem, the website said all I needed to do was email them and get a new licence file. So at 6.30pm I emailed their sales department, now the company is based in Austrailia so it was 5.30am Saturday there. After reading the website some more, I found that I was able to request a licence exception to use the software on another domain, subject to certain conditions. So I emailed asking for an exception too. The good support bit: Checked my email this morning to find the licence file and exception granted!! Less than 6 hours later, on a Saturday morning, problem solved. One very happy PaperCut User

We use option 1, with a slight difference. All toners / carts are purchased centrally be me from a consumables budget, getting the best price by shopping around and bulk buying. We also source all printers to ensure the minimal number of different models. We then log all toners / carts fitted or issued. From this I generate a monthly bill for each department. The bursar transfers funds back to the consumables budget from the departments. Any toners / carts going into bookable ICT rooms are totalled up every term. The costs of these are split between the different curriculum areas, according to the percentage of periods they have used the rooms. So if English use IT4 10% of the time, they are billed 10% of the cost of the toners put in IT4 that term. Its not perfect but with some clever purchasing and rationalisation of printer types I cut the costs in half in 18 months. Hope to cut cost even more next year by expanding our papercut software to staff.

The all seeing eyes of Ric_!! But do the teachers know what they are using?

Which gives 1000 texts with an unlimited life - 8p each isn't bad. I've been looking further at this and there are a couple of issues I need to sort out in my head: What if one of the following fails- email server fails - no SMS switch between monitoring server / email fails - no SMS switch between email / internet - no SMS internet is down - no SMS So there will be at least 4 situations where I would be unaware of any problems. Is it still worth sending SMS's without everything being reported? Hmmmmm....
-
We currently use Ipswitch What's Up Gold to monitor our network. As part of this notifications can be sent via SMS. I was wondering if anyone else uses SMS for notification of failures of servers / switches, and who you use to provide the SMS service. I've just been looking at FastSMS which might fit the bill.

Check the time and date on the laptop, we've had issues with sophos when the server and laptop aren't the same.

I'm intending to switch as many people to lasers as possible this year. Another couple of reasons fot this other than cost are: Stock / purchasing - don't have to buy hundereds of carts every year. Time - only need to replace 1 toner instead of 10 visits for inks.

I host our school site on Zen on the silver package.. Never had any problems. They use cPanel with Fantastico scripts to allow easy install of joomla. They will invoice via email too, so no need to use a credit card. Not used SMTP so can't comment on that one.

Which Backup Exec version + optional features to use?
steve replied to OverWorked's topic in How do you do....it?
From Symantec I read this as, if you have 1 server with the full product on, you will need an agent for each of the other 2 servers and an agent for the SQL server. 1x Backup Exec 2x Windows Agents 1x SQL Agent This is how I've licenced Backup Exec 9. Check out the Agent EULA -
Not heard that one .... interesting. I was at a SIMS conference in Doncaster last week with some of the Donny LA support, didn't hear anything there. I'll keep an eye out for anything.

Has anyone got a Slingbox? For those not familiar with them, they offer place shifting - the ability to watch a tv /sky / dvd / video signal (transmitted by you) on any internet connected computer. Just wondered if anyone has anything good / bad to say about them. Considering one for home and possibly some for work. Price: £149 inc vat (dixons offering £10 off - £139 - code NOW35)

Sheffield are almost exclusively SIMS. Doncaster likewise.

Saw some interesting stuff at BETT: http://www.i-desk.co.uk/joomla/

Hows about someone sets up another poll: We the undersigned, call for this online petition website to be shut down as the government will never take any notice of the public concerns raised on it.

We have a default config for our AP's we can load onto them (cisco APs). On the clients, we only have to setup 1 default profile for all staff, no matter where onsite they plan to use the laptop.
-
We have all 30 of our AP's with the same SSID. Makes setup and config of AP and laptop so much easier. I have noticed occasionally laptops don't roam to the nearest / strongest signal if they still have a connection to another AP no matter how weak the signal. A reset would make the laptop search again and would pick the strongest signal.

Little Britain Style: One moment. [calls upstairs] Margaret! Margaret! Do we have any ICT / History / PSHE related an online adventure game that features the Tudor period of history?
-
Makes a nice change people moaning about CMIS instead of SIMS. Sorry I can't offer any help, but maybe give Phil Neal a call, I'm sure he'd be more than happy to offer you a solution to your problems. A smug SIMS user

Why is the governments answer to everything at the moment to use technology? Schools, Hospitals, Traffic, now ID cards! Only one slight problem - its all at odds with their stand on climate change, unless technology can fix that too?? They won't be compulsory - unless you get a new passport - which have risen in price massivly too.

Shame they don't offer a guarantee the premises team won't borrow them for a lifetime.

Try Mills, they have some good quality tools, I have purchased a fair bit of kit from them and they have always been excellent.

A technical roadmap has been published on the CapitaES site. SQL2005 migration will be available in August 07. All updates from August 07 on will only run on SQL 2005 / Express SQL 2005 will need .net 2 framework Support for Win2000 Pro is being dropped Feb 2008 And of course Office 2003 is now needed for SIMS Plus the version of Veritas I have doesn't backup SQL 2005 either. Lucks like I'll be busy in the summer again :-)
