Wouldn’t it be better to migrate the data into your new MIS so you can completely blow SIMS out of the water? Having this unsupported system that you will still need is I use (even on occasion) is a risk. If you choose to keep this it should be added to the risk register.

There isn't enough information to answer this. DNS is used even without on-premise servers. For example, it can be used for Unifi devices to point it to the controller. What do you use for your Firewall? May products provide DNS facilities. I would probably set this up anyway so you're good to go should you need it.

Like every employee, including IT, access should be aligned to their duties. So only give access to perform tasks they will be carrying out.

Hello, I am trying to copy data from an Ubuntu machine onto a Synology NAS. I have setup Rsync to do this. However, the permissions on the files when they are copied destination (Synology NAS) aren't correct. Folders that have been created are ok. I would like the permissions to be inherited from the parent folder on the NAS. However, whatever I seem to do they are in some way not correct. I am using this command. sudo rsync -rtvm --perms -p --prune-empty-dirs --remove-source-files "/Test/" [email protected]:'"/volume1/dir/Test/"' I have also used sudo rsync -rtvm --no-perms --prune-empty-dirs --remove-source-files "/Test/" [email protected]:'"/volume1/dir/Test/"' sudo rsync -rtvm --chmod=ugo=rwX --prune-empty-dirs --remove-source-files "/Test/" [email protected]:'"/volume1/dir/Test/"' sudo rsync -rtAvm --chmod=ugo=rwX --prune-empty-dirs --remove-source-files "/Test/" [email protected]:'"/volume1/dir/Test/"' Can someone help me crack this please? Check you're not pointing to 1 domain controller for authentication. Also check the same for DNS.

I am looking at possibly using Mikrotik managed switches at home. I am wondering if anyone has any experience or feedback please? Anything to watch out for? Thank you.

I’m not 100% sure why. One reason could be the software is becoming more advanced. For example the Cisco Catalyst 9200L can run an instance of Wireshark on the switch itself. So I think more compute power is needed. They are begging more power hungry so that could also be if.

I have noticed switches are getting deeper. We had to replace a number of racks in a rollout 18 months ago. My current employer is having the same issues.

Because SIMS is a legacy product that wasn’t designed with cloud in mind. SIMS was dated 10 years ago before OneDrive sync was a thing. Time for a new MIS that supports the modern way of working.

From what I understand it won’t actually touch Google Drive. It will essentially be a OneDrive client for ChrkmeOS. You can open (Office Online) and save files directly from the file explorer.

I wouldn’t be allowing staff to use their own printers. It’s a security risk. The software that comes with it will likely to have vulnerabilities.

You can’t really use the colour of the cable to judge the type. I have seen OM3 in Black, Green and Light Blue. I have also seen Single Mode OS2 in yellow, black and Green. You would have to find a section where you can see the writing. It should indicate what’s inside.

Why would you do this instead of native radius authentication? It would authenticate based on the AD computer account and you won’t be required to populate the MAC addresses. Plus mac addresses can be spoofed.

This would be a security flaw. But could be hardened by locking down odd VLANS so they can only communicate to where they need to. For example ip phones only being able to connect to the PBX on the specific ports. Same with printers, CCTV etc.
