So by doing the following I seem to have a stable start menu layout: 1) use v1703 2) strip apps out of wim file 3) don't use roaming profiles or start menu redirection 4) pin tiles from the all apps list 5) any other tiles I want I add links to in %allusersprofile% start folder Number 5 is still a bit of an issue as if I add a link after first login the user needs to login and get the all apps list updated, however the xml has already updated without the link being ready (if you see what I mean) so requires the time stamp on the XML to be updated again. I am toying with a few options including storing the xml locally and updating the time stamp on log off, that way the next login will always refresh the start layout

The MS guide that I reading stated that this doesn't work with either roaming profiles or redirected start menus. I'll dig out the link but yeah I've read that a few times now.

Initial tests seem to confirm this. All the problems I was having with 1511 and 1607 xml layouts *seem* to be resolved. The layouts are deploying and behaving themselves.

Did you set copy profile to true in the unattended file? true

You might want to check this group policy setting Computer Configuration -> Administrative Settings -> System -> Logon -> Assign a default domain for logon It *could* be that by default its trying to login to a nonexistent domain, which wold explain why just username + password fails but specifying the domain works.

So, is anyone using CS with v1703? I've read a few accounts of bugs on the CS forum and a promised update for 1703 has not materialised yet with the developer saying it's not being developed as actively as it was. Quite worrying as I've played with the native start menu is 1703 and it's still borked [emoji20]

Same here, Azure AD Sync is an issue too. Also an odd issue where sometimes a VM can't connect to network and needs a reboot.

Do you mean the free version? We have that and can assign apps to devices with no problem.

Similar to my suggestion about categorising posts about Win 10 by build, we could do with updated tags for SCCM as it now follows the Win 10 release schedule. The most recent tag for SCCM is [sCCM 2012] which is now out of date. Tags for SCCM Current Branch builds would be great.

What I usually do this that circumstance is to create an msi with Advanced Installer (free version) that just places the files in the right place. Takes a couple of mins to create. I then use that msi to make an application in SCCM so that after the software is installed the msi runs to place the config in the right place. Although I guess if you are happy scripting those installs then that works, you just won't get the kind of logging you get with msi deployed from sccm.

Personally I would move away from the batch file method to using SCCM's own deployment tools. At least you'll get some meaningful feedback in the logs about any deployment errors. Its probably worth reading the following guide on creating applications from the Windows Noob site: https://www.windows-noob.com/forums/topic/6629-using-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-part-8-deploying-applications/ However rather than deploying your applications to a device collection, you want to create Task Sequence step as mentioned above and add your applications in there.

Hmm that's interesting, SCCM has always had tools to deploy software to help you move away from scripted deployments. Sorry what I meant was during a Task Sequence to deploy an OS you can add a step to deploy all the software you want. Here is the step from our Windows 10 OSD Task Sequence. Yes, you don't choose at this point, it has to be added to the Task Sequence as in my example.

My first question is what is the purpose of installing software via PS or batch files? Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you are doing but the software can just be installed via the "install Application" TS step during imaging or the native application deployment within SCCM after imaging. I can't see why you would need to use anything extra?
