LEA catering lots of stuff, mostly crap. Outsourced catering little portions, mostly nice. At my last place we had the best of both worlds through the LEA on a separate contract. £2.00 fish, chips and mushy peas. And no staff member ever finished it all!

Happens with my Buffalo Drive Station. It's an 8.1 driver error with ASmedia USB 3 controllers. No known fix at the moment. For a time had a script silently write and delete a file to the drive every 5 minutes to stop it from sleeping and loosing connection. In the end I got round to making a home server and sharing it!!

We've got a few Logitech ones (£60 odd from PC World) Works fine when paired. My SLT had an idea to keep one in the SLT room so anyone could use it. Of course they have to de-pair and re-pair and that is a pain. I've nicked one, and I like it, but unless you do all your typing in your iPad it's not really worth it.

Desktop i5 2500 with 8GB RAM 120GB cheapo SSD and BluRay burner, old nVidia card with dual monitors. It's basically a server that I can connect to where ever I am in the City. Laptop is an i5 Alienware M14X R2 upgraded to 16GB RAM, a decent Samsung 256GB SSD. I use this constantly.

Hello, A local school has asked me for advice on SLT and admin staff using their laptops for long (1+ hours in a sitting) periods of time and health and safety. They've been told that this is not safe and that admin/SLT should have a desktop PC for use in their office, and use their laptops purely for use at home. I've never come across this before. Even the idea of a docking station, or pseudo docking station has been pooh-poohed. Now I assume that this is a ploy of "I've left me laptop at home" or "It's so heavy to move from my car to my office!" and they want a desktop as well to make life easier. Anyone else had experience with this? If it is a proper legislated H&S issue, then it's fine, I'd just like to find where in the books it is.

Yes, and judging by the Safeguard 90 day lock outs no bugger uses them. I mentioned this to the CoG who is now making the case to stop automatically giving teachers laptops. As I keep telling them Laptops for Teachers was a one off in 2004 - every subsequent laptop bought since then was with the schools money. It's not a right! It gets even worse though. At my sister in laws school they have a "chap" who knows the Head who does their IT. She was given a brand new 17" Acer laptop (with nice nVidia card) and it's unusable!

Fixed it. Remembered I had to use openssl to merge the private key and the certificate into a .pfx

ARGH! Help required. They will give me a Private key hash and a certificate, but not both together to install on a web server unless I move up to personal identity confirmation @ $58! Am I doing something wrong?!

Hello Folks, We have an exciting opportunity for a Grade 3 Senior IT Support Officer at Uffculme School. We are soon to be the largest ASD (autism) school in Europe! This is a full time role (36.5 hours) and year round so the salary is actual not prorata. We are expanding rapidly from a small primary several years ago, to all age now. We have students from nursery right up to Year 11, and up to 19 and perhaps beyond in the future. In September 2014 we will have a brand new second site dedicated purely to our secondary and post 16 students. The successful applicant would be responsible for the day to day running of operational IT on the primary site and have a key role in our expansion plans for the new site. You would join a successful team of two: myself and our term-time technician who will split his time between sites. Outside of academies being able to participate in the operational and strategic detail work of a new site is a very rare thing. There are primaries going through the extra pupil places programme in Birmingham, but most of those are just adding buildings to the existing site. The department has an excellent working relationship with the class staff, the Senior Leadership team and the Governing Body. IT is not seen just as a means to an end and we have a say in everything regarding IT expansion - which covers everything from servers and iPads to sensory rooms. OK hard sell over! We are expanding rapidly and I'd be lying if I said this wasn't an excellent CV building job. Unlike some academies we are handling and co-ordinating the new site in house. Obviously there are no guarantees, but there could be room for progression in the coming years as we get bigger. We did have a service level agreement with them for four terms and now they are in a position to employ their own IT Manager. I used to turn up all smart, but when there's only 5 male members of staff out of 80 and the only other guy to wear a suit/tie is the Head you tend to stick out a bit - a look a little preposterous!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has come across a solution to this. I'm in the process of moving back to Linux so my 3TB external drive thing (Buffalo Raid Station - USB 3 - very nice actually!) is still NTFS formatted. Well, I say still, I can't actually move the 2.5TB of data anywhere else to reformat it. Anywho, any VMs under Linux run from NTFS massively slow down. I'm talking 15 minute boot times, CPU temps up in the 90s. I've tried a fix VMware recommends about disabling write caching in the *.vmx file on NTFS, but that doesn't work. I'd hoped VMware Workstation 10 would sort this, but after upgrading my installation and the VM - no dice. Obviously I can run it from an Ext4 drive. I have a 250GB SSD, and a 256GB spinner but I'd have to make sure I kept a back up on my NTFS drive for when I go back into Windows (and the NTFS drive is mirrored). Any ideas? VirtualBox doesn't seem to have this problem, but as I've paid for VMware - and let's be honest it is better, especially with graphics - I'd prefer to use it.

I doubt they would go after schools or libraries - imagine the PR damage!

Rolled it back at one of my schools. Whacking great white gap on every page with a Flash element. Rolled back to IE9 - error gone!
