How is your relationship with your Head? It could very well be worth having a chat with her/him about it, especially as you manage staff (do you control budgets?). The Head could put it through as an internal vacancy without having to the the GB staff committee.

Have you tried setting the proxy server as the server IP only? Are the new iPads list in the DNS and DHCP server on the "main" LAN, as the BYOD run's it's own from Smoothwall

I've found that this didn't work! Anon users only have view not read access and no where to change it. So if I tweeted a direct link to a file, an anon user would be directed to a logon box. If they went through Sharepoint and found the file manually it opened. Also if they tried to browse directories the same thing happened. This addon: https://xenoxgaravito.sharepoint.com/Blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=8 works wonders. You have to add it as a web part on a page. I've just hidden it. The settings I've found that let anon users open files direct from URLs and browse directories are: ViewListItems, OpenItems, ViewFormPages, Open, ViewPages, BrowseDirectories, AnonymousSearchAccessWebLists I use the public Sharepoint as a parents portal. We upload flyers, newsletters, letters etc there. Makes admin much easier than having to upload and link in Joomla.

Props for the keyboard. I'm still using a MS Internet keyboard (the one with 2 USB ports that just do not work on anything unless it's plugged into a powered hub) and an old Acorn RISC PC clicky clacky keyboard on my servers. You just can't beat them over these new soft, horrible ones.

Just had a cold call from Imperial. After letting the guy (Simon) know that we use several suppliers and quote often so not really interested in cold calls. Guy got quite aggressive saying that if he was a Network Manager he'd get them to quote as they are the cheapest in the UK and promptly hung up before I could rip into him. Got to be a scam, no cold callers from any reputable company and it doesn't matter how dismissive the cold callee is would react like that. In his rant there was a reference to a catalogue and a trial in the post. Looks like a bullet dodged.

Actually my fear is from when I was four and had my tonsils out. Just before the needle went in for the anesthetic I was told to "look at the pretty butterflies!" and that just did it for me. As someone with an irrational fear of moths - good. Many bee's, in fact three nests in the garden. On about IT techs I think we're much more secure now than we have been as a disparate group in years. Academies and Free Schools are basically businesses, maintained schools are running more like businesses who appreciate professional diversity. It's now no longer all about the teachers. IT (corporate IT), finance (corp. finance dept.), pastoral (corp HR dept.) and business (corp. marketing and Ops management) are seen as equal professional partners by SLT and Governors.

I'd like to see him come into a special after sacking all the TAs. We have on average 1:3 staffing (in some cases 1:1) - so is he going to hire an extra 50 teachers to replace the 50 TAs (50x £21,000 (max grade) or 50x £31,000 (max MPS))? Idiot.

As part of Office 365. It just rocks. SLT at both of my schools are now walking around with iPad in hand video conferencing with each other. If you haven't played with it I suggest taking a look. Far better than old OCS.

I'm so glad primaries are wising up and getting school employed technical staff the amount of schools with problems like this. Some in Birmingham are actually getting proper IT Managers in at a proper wage scale too. Not as bad as one school a while back, the middle school techie had to go back to the secondary IT manager for approval just to change a toner.

Curriculum and admin are backed up to the Cloud nightly via the LEA -so the covers all the DPA questions. Assuming that the LEA can be trusted! 30 days instant retrevial rest on tape for request. MIS backup taken weekly and kept on a PC on the other side of the school. Critical documents are the same. About once a term I back a MIS and critical backup stick it in a TrueCrypt container and whack it on our partner schools server and vice versa. Neither can access the others as the passwords are kept on site at the respective schools. As the schools are on the other side of the city that provides a little bit of extra security.

Remember Link2ICT are running a BYOD day next week on advice to schools! Which I'm being dragged along to. AFAIK BGfL doesn't exist anymore. The time for a big grid with central resources for all schools has long past. Consider them really to be your ISP, filtering, potential supplier and MIS support.

Hello I was wondering if any schools had any old server floating around they wouldn't mind donating to an all age special. Basically I need a couple more than run x64 versions of Windows Server. I've been considering a couple of micro servers, but I thought I'd try my luck here. Any donations would be very well received!

Outside of the big city I'd consider your main concern to be filtering. Not really setting it up as Smoothwall is available, but selling it to your Govs and SLT that the responsibility is now on them. Any parent going to the press about insufficient filtering and you can't throw it back at the LEA.

I cannot get this confounded widget to work! DotNet 3.5.1, Powershell 2.0 and the MSOnline tools are installed on a server running 2008 R2. When I enter the "true" admin account details all I get is incorrect user/pass. This is same when I create a new general admin account as well. I've reset my password to remove any special characters and it still doesn't work. I know this isn't a big thing, but I've now dropped so much time into getting it working I do not want to just drop it! I've used netsh winhttp set proxy as well.
