Hey, I'm hoping somebody here will be able to give me some guidance as I'm running out of ideas... Background: Partners computer decided randomly one morning that her system HDD doesn't work anymore. I tried all sorts of bios settings, cable and jumper combinations but the bottom line is that her computer would not recognize the drive even existed, not even at bootup let alone in windows after reinstalling windows onto her backup drive. I placed the damaged drive into my computer and not only did it not show up anywhere but it stopped my backup hdd from displaying in windows (told me it had to be formatted). I've determined that the only way I can get anything out of the hdd is to place it on an IDE channel all by itself. Luckily my primary hdd is a SATA drive so all I had to do was unplug my backup drive and we were in business, sort of... So windows now recognize the new piece of hardware and installs drivers for it. The problem now is that the Disk Management utility shows the physical drive (80g WD drive with 2 partitions) as only 7.5g in size. I assume that this space is what was left over from the 2 partitions. I also noted that my computer is VERY slow to boot past the windows loading screen when the damaged drive is attached. Recover My Files Results: Not good so far I'm afraid. I download the latest version and have tried to run fast and complete format recovers on the 7.5g physical drives to no avail. The search starts and it all seems OK but it runs incredibly slowly. I left it running overnight and almost 9hours later the search box read something like, "searching drive 0-80 of 16540064". Yes, that says 80 of 16 million. Now after 9 hours my very poor math skills tell me that I would have to wait somewhere around 100 years for that search to finish Oh and my computer that I'm trying to repair the drive on is WinXP Pro x64 edition. I don't know if this makes any difference but the stupid OS stuffs up so many programs that I never can be sure So what now? Is there any hope left?

I had similar problem. While installing Windows Vista, my HDD crashed. I tried every possible thing to get my data back. But, problem was I recreated partition table and data recovery seemed to be difficult. I contacted Salvage Data Recovery Lab at 76 Progress Drive Corporate Park; Stamford, CT 06902. They provided me the right software and guided me to recover data. Thanks for their service and help. I got 100% of my data back.

Vista Vista !!! I don’t know how many people are facing problems during upgrading there system with Vista. But I should not have upgraded my system with that. I’ve had my karma about 6 months, initially I had a few problems with it freezing etc but nothing major. Then last week it crashed and then froze on the rebuilding database screen when I turned it back on. I’ve finally got it on now but everything is gone. The thing is that it still says that there’s 12gb being used when I go to 'about rio karma'. Does anyone know of any way to salvage the music on there because following the recent death of my hard drive, all my music was on the rio (I never got around to putting it back on the pc). I’ve tried rio taxi and riorad explorer, both to no avail. If anyone has any ideas id really appreciate it, since there was some really rare tracks on there.

The problem is that the file allocation table (of sorts) is corrupted. Things like this can happen to any hard drive device, so to fix it, you must treat the karma as an external hard drive and proceed from there. Connect the karma to your pc with the usb cable so that windows will recognize it as a device (assigning it a drive letter) and you can access it through my computer. If you can't access it through my computer, then use [[start>settings>control panel>administrative tools>computer management]]. Use the disk management tool to find the karma and give it a drive letter. Then you should run data recovery software on that drive. The software will ignore the file allocation table and read through your hard drive sector by sector to determine what is actually on the disk. One data recovery software that I am using is by a SalvageData Labs. Yes, you have to purchase salvage software (or acquire it by some means), But it’s a nice software I am sure you get your data back.

I was upgrading my system with new windows Vista which causes loss of my data. Don’t get surprised now I need help recovering a few days worth of photos in Barcelona off my 20 GB flashtrax, it is essentially a 20gb portable usb2.0 hard drive with a CF card reader, it acts as a portable hard drive, so I imagine any data recovery tools that would work for portable hard drives would work for this, but I'm having trouble finding anything at this point. I'm on my friend's 15" power book at a star bucks, and would have to run any data recovery off this computer, so far all I've seen is for pc, if it has to be from a pc i can arrange that. Is this doable? Please help!?!?!? Thanks in advance
