The single worst part of this for me is my bloody techie is the worst culprit for creating random folders in the staff common drive. Class 4B have taken photos last Tuesday? Fine! Can you control this with Group Policy, or would you need to use mandatory profiles? I need to find a way to keep some 16-bit applications working. I was thinking of updating the default Windows XP mode image, installing all the updates and removing everything installed apart from these Macromedia based applications and also deleting the network interfaces. I'd then install Virtual PC on the PCs required and copy this image locally with everything disabled. I'd want to ensure that users can run it from C:\ in read only made, and not make any changes to either the VM or to the Virtual PC settings. It would be useful to have the thing suspend or hibernate each time so I doesn't take 10 minutes to boot the damn thing up. For some reason these software titles (Switch It from Inclusive Education) where built with a 16 bit only version of Macromedia Player. They won't run on newer versions!

I will (grudgingly) admit my 2007 plastic MacBook is still not only in perfect working order, but perfect comestic order. This used to be in continuous class room use, with a highly challenging class at a special school. I also have a 2007 Acer Aspire which is also in perfect working order, but the plastic has faded. At least you can say Apple use superior quality plastic!

When I stared school there were Acorn's everywhere. I still use a RasPi with RISC OS on to our reception PowerPoint - just 'cos I can. My admin machines are on Windows 7 along with staff laptops. Class Room desktops are XP until the summer. I was going to migrate them next week during Easter but due to three issues: 1) 25% of the curric software is 16 bit only and will not work. The newest was © 1999! Staff use this in lesson plans, so I have to wait for a new academic year to get rid of it. 2) It's assessment term after Easter and apparently a new "system" will cause the teachers so much "extra stress" 3) To avoid this "extra stress" it's better to do such a large change during the summer. Apparently teachers deal better with new things at the start of a new academic year. And they are supposed to be educated, resourceful people

The 14" AlienWare isn't that heavy! Yes, it's thick but that is because of the number of good components in there. I find mine is lighter than someone of the big cheap Toshiba 17"s that staff keep bringing in.

My Alienware M14xR2 is also of fantastic build quality, and costs LESS than a decent Mac Book Pro - it doesn't mean I'm replacing all the staff laptops with them!

Be glad you don't work in special! It's taken me years to train myself out of one user, one logon. Even up to Yr 9 the kids cannot use individual logons, and we have far more TAs than teachers. I tried insisting on everyone use their own logon, and you ended up with multiple logon's/logoff's during a lesson. Had to stick to generic staff class logons. It hurts, but it's the only way that works.

A collegue has his EES via Link2ICT. New in post and I assume he wants to grab a copy of Office 2013 and understand how EES works. L2ICT account manager has told him that to use Office on their EES model he needs to have a perpetual license for a previous version?! I assume this has been garbled and they were talking about Windows - which requires an OEM/retail sticker of some sort to upgrade. Or have I completely misunderstood the EES Office licensing model?!!!!!!

And if they then connect via VPN it works Gain? If so: awesome. Why have I wastes the past year with GPPs!

Re the wpad/PAC route: How do clients access this from offsite? For example I add a line that for home router IP ranges it forces direct connection so staff don't need to turn it off. Does the client system "cache" a copy of the wpad/PAC file or does the we server it's hosted on need to be publicly accessible?

Windows 8.1 Update 1 now live on Technet. I wonder why after killing Technet MSFT are still putting new things on there? Both as a standalone update, and slipstreamed with Pro and Enterprise media. Nothing on VLSC yet for VL slipstreamed builds. Downloading now. The Technet version should install on VL installations - the leaked version did!

Good in theory, in practice it can be different. As I said last year I tried this, and Virgin basically said they are loosing customers to Sky due to the offers running and they have no retention offers to come close to Sky's new customer deals. Basically I was told to leave!
